We all know that the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) is one of few steppingstones we have to take before wanting to further our studies and most of us during the pre-pandemic time were fortunate to sit it in school with our friends.
But recently, SPM candidate Husna Shafieqa Husni Hanafi (18) from SMK Kubang Bemban may need to sit for her exam while being bedridden. Although it may seem like a relaxing thing, but this is due to her suffering from nerve damage. She first developed the nerve damage in December 2021 and the healthy student couldn&rsquo;t sit or stand.

According to her mother Suriana Mat Hussin (45) said that she was heart broken to see her eldest daughter still working hard to study for her exams while lying on the bed. During her SPM trial exams, she managed to score 5As too.
She said that her daughter first complained that she couldn&rsquo;t get up from bed like normal but over time her condition had deteriorated as she had to be carried to the bathroom one day. After that incident, she was brought to Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) Kubang Kerian and the doctor had confirmed that she was suffering from nerve damage.
Due to her suffering nerve damage, Husna could no longer join her classmates in school, and she had to continue online learning from home. Thankfully, she has very supportive teachers and classmates to help her go through this tough situation.
&ldquo;Every day I pray that Husna will recover because she&rsquo;s the family&rsquo;s hope and a good example to her younger siblings,&rdquo; said Husna&rsquo;s mother.
Aid from Social Welfare Department (JKM)
Thankfully, the family receives monetary help from the Social Welfare Department and gets RM450 a month.
Initially, Husna said that she wanted to give up hope after hearing about her diagnostics but with the help of her family and teachers, she is determined to do well in her exams to help change her family&rsquo;s future.

Justice Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, who chaired the panel, announced the decision on 25 June 2025, alongside Justices Datuk Azman Abdullah and Datuk Noorin Badaruddin. Justice Noorin, delivering the court&rsquo;s judgment, emphasised that the original trial had been marred by serious legal and procedural missteps, leading the panel to conclude that Syed Saddiq should never have been convicted in the first place.
Flawed Trial and Misinterpretation of Evidence

&ldquo;The learned trial judge did not fairly evaluate the defence and wrongly treated it as a mere denial,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;There was no element of dishonesty when Syed Saddiq instructed his staff to withdraw party funds, as he was legally entitled to do so at the time.&rdquo;
The court ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the core elements of the offences, particularly the intent required for criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation, and money laundering. According to the judgment, the failure to properly direct the trial and the misinterpretation of legal standards warranted full appellate intervention.
The Charges and What They Meant
Syed Saddiq, 32, had been convicted in 2023 on four charges:

The High Court had ordered the sentences for CBT and misappropriation to run consecutively, meaning he faced seven years in jail. The money laundering convictions would have added an additional two years, running concurrently. Syed Saddiq&rsquo;s sentence also included two strokes of the rotan and a RM10 million fine. The sentence had been stayed pending the appeal.
