<p>Skateboarding is one of the most popular outdoors hobbies for many people. In fact, it had got really popular thanks to it being featured as an extreme sporting event in the Olympics, Asian Games, SEA Games as well as the very well-known X Games.</p>
<p>Another reason behind the popularity is due to the skating legend Tony Hawk who&rsquo;s dominated the skating scene for many years.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, some cultures still look at skateboarding negatively and looks like our very own Malaysian syllabus does the same. A Form 2 Moral textbook image had been posted on social media and local skating communities did not seem to appreciate the impression of skateboarding being an immoral thing to do.</p>
<p>The textbook featured four male students where 3 were in uniform and one in casual clothing hanging out with skateboards.</p>
<p>Three questions were posed to the students, and it was:<br /><br />1) How do you feel when you see the picture above? Why?<br />2) Predict what will happen if the teens continues behaving like that/<br />3) Explain the proper values that you need to practice to build good character based on religion or beliefs.</p>

<p>Local skateboarding community <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sk8msia/">@sk8msia</a> expressed their disappointment on their Instagram page showing the image of the textbook.</p>
<p>They wondered the motive behind the publisher on choosing the image and said the that it had misconstrued the skateboarding community.</p>
<p>Skate Malaysia had also pointed out that it&rsquo;s been recognised as a sporting event in Asia Games, SEA Games and Tokyo 2022.</p>
<p>Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu alongside Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin were tagged and urged to look into the matter.</p>
<p><strong>A look behind the meaning of the picture</strong></p>

<p>Netizens had shared different explanations of the picture across social media. Some even pointed it to be a lesson for discouraging people from skating since it shows a boy without a school uniform.</p>
<p>Another thing to note is that the image could have also been misinterpreted towards implying the immoral behaviour of being a skateboarder due to no additional explanation in the text book nor the answer script from the teachers.</p>
<p>Rather than illustrating that skateboarding promotes bad moral behaviour, a better picture could have been used for the matter. One netizen pointed out an example of mat rempits or people taking drugs as a more negative fall back.</p>

<p>As some had pointed out, the main issue behind the picture would just be the &ldquo;budaya lepak&rdquo; they may imply, and it does not have anything to do with one&rsquo;s religion. One more comment that stood out was how skateboarding communities actually support and help one another with the &ldquo;work hard, play hard together&rdquo; mindset.</p>
<p>Plus, when an individual gets into sports, it will require a lot of motivation towards yourself as it helps get you out of your comfort zone.</p>
