Education is something very important that everyone needs but not everybody could get. The main issue with education is that it is expensive, but many are only willing to give scholarships or programmes to those who score high grades.

Recently, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that there will be an implementation of scholarship programmes dubbed Dermasiswa B40 TVET which will be specifically for B40 students pursuing in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) at public higher learning institutions under the Higher Education Ministry this year.
The purpose of the TVET programme is to help encourage and motivate students to pursue their tertiary studies in TVET. The first intake of the new programme will involve up to 1,000 students.

&ldquo;The government projects that each intake of the programme will involve a financial implication of RM36.41 million&rdquo;, said Ismail Sabri.
As the programme allows those from the B40 household to gain more opportunities, he&rsquo;s certain that these students can get the assistance they need to build their own careers in the TVET field.
Currently, TVET is identified as one of 14 game changers in Malaysia. The government is trying to get the youth to make TVET as one of their choices as a guide towards the preparation for their future. The goal is to provide education and also have an outcome at par if not better than those in other developed countries.
TVET Day to be celebrated every year
During the launch ceremony, it was noted that the National TVET Day will be celebrated on June 2 every year to recognise the contributions of many quarters to TVET.
Does that mean another public holiday? Nah I don&rsquo;t think so.
&ldquo;It is also in conjunction with the establishment of Politeknik Ungku Omar, which is the country&rsquo;s earliest institution to provide TVET education since 1969,&rdquo; he said.
The main concern brought up by the government for the TVET programme is the provision of high funding where up to 80% of public TVET providers offered programmes for free. A total of 171,412 TVET programmes were offered from 2019 to 2021 for those pursuing diploma and a bachelor&rsquo;s degree level.
TVET sector yet to achieve the set target

Public awareness of the lucrative income to those working in the TVET sector has increased however they have yet to achieve their set target. Ismail Sabri notes that a paradigm shift must be done to create a more positive perception towards TVET with the support of the industry, parents and youth.
As of now, the government will be strategically planning on promoting TVET to Keluarga Malaysia as a highlight towards career opportunities and allowing students to conduct field visits so spark interest within their future industry choice.
Hopefully with the introduction of TVET courses, Malaysia can produce more youths to help contribute to specific industries and boost our economy up in the future.

In a decisive move to address rising concerns over youth vaping, the Selangor state government has ordered all local authorities to immediately seize and remove advertisements promoting vape and electronic cigarette products. Backed by Federal Legislation

The state&rsquo;s decision follows growing public concern about the visibility of vape marketing, particularly near schools and public areas, which critics say normalises the habit among impressionable youth.
Vaping Among Teen Boys Described as &lsquo;Alarming&rsquo;

&ldquo;These statistics are not just numbers; they represent thousands of young lives potentially heading down a path of addiction and health problems,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;We cannot afford to be passive. The time to act is now.&rdquo;
Online Sales Remain a Key Regulatory Challenge

&ldquo;Our approach is measured but firm. We are studying all possible implications&mdash;economic, legal, and social&mdash;before proceeding with a final stance on vape sales,&rdquo; she said.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has launched a newly-designed physical Malaysian driving licence card featuring improved security elements and a refreshed aesthetic meant to symbolise the country's modernisation journey. While the move marks a key milestone in JPJ&rsquo;s broader digital transformation, the physical version of this updated licence is not available to everyone &mdash; at least for now.
Physical Card Limited to Travellers and Foreigners
Beginning 21 May 2025, the new physical driving licence card will only be issued to two categories of individuals:

<li>Malaysian citizens who need to drive overseas</li>
<li>Foreign nationals residing in Malaysia renewing their licences</li>
</ol>
All other Malaysians renewing their driving licences will continue to receive only the digital version, accessible through the MyJPJ mobile application.

JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli explained that the physical licence remains important for international use, particularly in countries that do not yet recognise digital licences.
&ldquo;Singapore accepts digital driving licences, but many countries still require a physical document. So for Malaysians travelling abroad, we advise them to obtain both the physical card and the International Driving Permit (IDP),&rdquo; Aedy said during a press conference at the IM Intensif Driving Institute in Adda Heights, Johor.
Malaysians requesting the physical version will need to present evidence of overseas travel, such as flight tickets or international job assignments, when applying for the card. JPJ officers have been instructed to strictly enforce these eligibility requirements.
Modern Design Reflects Malaysian Identity

&ldquo;We are aligning with global trends. Many countries are digitising public services, and Malaysia is no exception. However, we understand that there will always be exceptions, particularly when dealing with cross-border travel,&rdquo; he said.
Reforming Malaysia&rsquo;s Driving Institutions
The new licence launch also ties into a broader reform effort by JPJ to raise standards in Malaysia&rsquo;s 248 registered driving schools and testing institutions. Aedy Fadly outlined three key focus areas for JPJ moving forward:

JPJ has vowed to step up inspections and will not hesitate to suspend or revoke licences of non-compliant institutions.
No Immediate Plans for General Distribution

Those who still wish to obtain a physical card without a valid overseas requirement will be denied under the current policy. However, the department hinted that further policy adjustments could be made in the future depending on public feedback and international developments.
Looking Ahead

Two years after sparking global outrage with a controversial joke about the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, Singapore-born comedian Jocelyn Chia has resurfaced with bold reflections and a surprisingly optimistic outlook on the fallout. Dubbed &ldquo;comedy&rsquo;s bad girl&rdquo; by Fox News, Chia insists she has no regrets &mdash; and, ironically, she now credits the backlash from Malaysia for propelling her international comedy career.
The infamous clip, recorded during a performance at New York&rsquo;s Comedy Cellar and posted to social media in June 2023, featured Chia making light of the MH370 tragedy as part of a routine on Singapore&ndash;Malaysia rivalry. Speaking to The Straits Times, Chia remained unapologetic. &ldquo;I wasn&rsquo;t trying to offend anybody. I was just doing my job,&rdquo; she said, adding that her comedy hinges on context, intent, and delivery &mdash; traits associated with the sharp, no-holds-barred style of New York stand-up.
The Boston-born former lawyer, who spent her formative years in Singapore and still has family there, said the controversial bit was not new. The backlash was swift and fierce. Malaysia&rsquo;s former badminton star Datuk Lee Chong Wei and comedian Harith Iskander condemned the joke. Malaysia&rsquo;s police even sought Interpol assistance to locate Chia &mdash; a move that ultimately did not materialise. Singapore&rsquo;s Foreign Minister publicly apologised for her remarks, stressing that Chia did not represent Singaporean values. High Commissioner Vanu Gopala Menon also clarified that Chia was no longer a Singaporean citizen. Singapore&rsquo;s Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan has also issued an apology after replying to Syed Saddiq on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The fallout cost her professional gigs as well. American tech giant IBM dropped her as a regular broadcast host following complaints from their Malaysian office. Other scheduled shows were cancelled, including performances in New York.
Despite the criticism, Chia maintained her stance. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not going to apologise,&rdquo; she reiterated. &ldquo;This is the reality of my work &mdash; some jokes land differently with different audiences.&rdquo;
Turning Controversy into Career Opportunity
While she was shunned by some comedians in Malaysia and Singapore, the reaction in the United States was markedly different. Chia said she found a surge of support and respect from her American peers. &ldquo;One comic even praised my ability to &lsquo;jiu-jitsu&rsquo; a cancellation attempt and turn it to my favour,&rdquo; she shared.
