Freedom Film Festival 2022 will be held in PJ Live Arts Theatre in Jaya One from 9th September to 17th September 2022.&nbsp;
It is an annual festival organised by Freedom Film Network, hoping to share films that express the theme of freedom and values embraced by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in Malaysia.&nbsp;
In this event, social commentary films that touch upon human rights issues from all around the world will be screened, giving voice to different marginalised communities.
This year, Freedom Film Festival 2022 will bring 8 talks and 16 films to PJ Live Arts Theatre, inviting everyone to reflect and contribute to the discussion on a variety of social problems.
<h2>Local Films&nbsp;</h2>
Among the films, there will be 12 Malaysia&rsquo;s films that deliver topics ranging from environmental issues to identity struggles. We will just highlight a few of them to let you understand the contexts that brew the films and their criticism!
1. Grey Scale
How do people deal with ageing that comes with difficulties like loneliness and the continual changes of the world? This film views the issue by focussing on the daily life of a single old woman in Penang.&nbsp;

What began as an ordinary late-night drive through the streets of George Town turned into a terrifying ordeal for a young woman, after a confrontation on the road allegedly escalated into a violent and humiliating assault involving a firearm. The alleged assailant? A man bearing the prestigious title of &lsquo;Datuk Seri&rsquo;.
The shocking incident, which unfolded in the early hours of 1 June, has not only sparked public outrage but also raised troubling questions about the ease with which influential individuals in Malaysia obtain and wield firearms &mdash; sometimes, quite literally, against unarmed members of the public.

He then allegedly pistol-whipped her, using the grip of the firearm to strike her face, causing severe injuries. The suspect also reportedly punched her repeatedly in the face using both the weapon and his bare hands. The victim sustained a broken nose and bruising around her left eye as a result of the attack.
Following the incident, she received emergency treatment at Penang General Hospital before filing a formal complaint with the Northeast District Police at 5.57pm the same day.

Bridge Closure Triggers Surge in Air Travel Demand

A Malaysian entrepreneur has captured national attention &mdash; and divided opinion &mdash; after throwing a lavish RM1 million birthday party for her 11-year-old daughter. The extravagant celebration, shared across social media platforms, featured luxury gifts and heartfelt messages, but also sparked debate over parenting, privilege, and public displays of wealth.
A Million-Ringgit Surprise

The entrepreneur, identified as Farhana Zahra, went viral after posting a series of videos showcasing an elaborate birthday celebration for her daughter, affectionately called Yaya. The event was marked by pink-themed decorations, formally dressed guests in black attire, and a string of high-value surprises.
Farhana explained that she had intentionally pretended to forget her daughter&rsquo;s birthday in order to create a more dramatic surprise on the day. The party revealed not only a grand setup but an impressive list of gifts that left many viewers stunned.
Among the presents gifted to the young girl were:

Farhana&rsquo;s gesture was framed as an act of love for her daughter, whom she claims already has her every wish fulfilled on a near-daily basis. She admitted struggling to decide what to give Yaya on her birthday since there was little left that the child did not already have.
&ldquo;All of Yaya&rsquo;s desires have been granted almost every day. So when her birthday came around, I was truly at a loss for what to give her,&rdquo; Farhana said.
Despite describing the lavish celebration as a &ldquo;small gift&rdquo;, the statement sparked a wave of mixed reactions online.
A Gift for the Former Driver Too
In a separate video, Farhana is also seen surprising her daughter&rsquo;s former driver with a luxury car as a gesture of appreciation, further adding to the extravagance and conversation surrounding the event.

Social Media Reacts: Admiration and Criticism
Online reaction was swift and polarising. While some viewers praised Farhana for her hard work and for going to such lengths to make her child happy, others were far more critical.
Some comments mocked the idea of gifting such expensive items to a child who is far from the legal driving age.
&ldquo;What would a little girl do with a Rolex? Use it during her Barbie tea party?&rdquo; quipped one user.
Others questioned the public sharing of the RM1 million price tag and speculated on Farhana&rsquo;s motives. A few even raised concerns about financial transparency, with jokes about tax evasion and whether the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) should investigate.
&ldquo;She put the car under her daughter&rsquo;s name so her assets can&rsquo;t be seized,&rdquo; speculated one netizen. &ldquo;People like this still get fuel subsidies like RON95,&rdquo; another commented cynically.
More serious concerns were also voiced, particularly around the expectations such extravagant gifts might create for the future. One user warned that raising children with such luxury at an early age could distort their values.

A 25-year-old British software engineer has gone missing in Kuala Lumpur after a night out in Bangsar, prompting a desperate search by his family and police in both Malaysia and the UK.

Jordan Michael John Johnson-Doyle, from Merseyside, England, was last heard from on the evening of Tuesday, 27 May. At around 8pm, he sent a photograph of a pub quiz poster at Healy Mac&rsquo;s Irish Bar in Bangsar to his best friend, which now marks his final known communication.
Jordan, who has been backpacking solo through Southeast Asia and the Mediterranean for the past 18 months while working remotely for a US-based company, had arrived in Malaysia from Vietnam on 17 May. He was believed to be staying at the Robertson Residences in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.
Family Raises Alarm After Uncharacteristic Silence
His mother, Leanne Burnett, became alarmed when she didn&rsquo;t hear from him the following day, something she describes as completely out of character. The two last spoke on Monday, 26 May, with no indication of anything amiss.
&ldquo;He always checks in regularly because he knows how worried we get,&rdquo; she told the Daily Mail. &ldquo;If he had lost his phone or laptop, he knows my number by heart. He&rsquo;d go to a hotel or an internet caf&eacute; to get in touch. The silence is just not like him.&rdquo;
Phone Signal Lost After Three Days

Concerned, Leanne used the Find My iPhone app early on 28 May and saw Jordan&rsquo;s phone last pinged at a block of residential flats near the pub on Jalan Telawi 3. However, the location had not updated for 11 hours. The phone then went completely silent by Friday, 30 May, suggesting it may have either run out of battery or been turned off.
&ldquo;Tracking him throughout the day didn&rsquo;t help &mdash; the location never changed. It was like he just disappeared,&rdquo; she added. &ldquo;We have no idea what has happened, but something is seriously wrong.&rdquo;
Efforts to Locate Jordan Intensify

Leanne has since filed a missing person report with Merseyside Police, the British Consulate, and Malaysian authorities. The British High Commission has confirmed it is supporting the family. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain also told local media that he had asked Kuala Lumpur police to verify the report and initiate further investigations.
On 3 June, Brickfields police confirmed receiving the missing person&rsquo;s report a day earlier. OCPD Assistant Commissioner Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood urged anyone with information to come forward and contact either their nearest police station or Pantai Police Station chief ASP Khairul Nizam Ramle at +60 14-700 0672. He also advised the public to avoid speculation.
Desperate Plea from Family: &ldquo;We Just Want Him Home&rdquo;

Leanne has taken to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/480862776948085/posts/1262706835430338/">social media</a>, posting Jordan&rsquo;s photo and details in local Facebook groups, including &ldquo;Missing Persons in Malaysia &ndash; Sharing is Caring,&rdquo; in hopes of raising awareness. She also provided her contact number (+44 7754 718679) and encouraged anyone with potential leads to reach out via WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re preparing to fly to Malaysia to search for him ourselves. I just want to get over there, find him, and bring him home,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;This is every parent&rsquo;s worst nightmare.&rdquo;
Jordan is described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall, of medium build, with shoulder-length mousy brown hair usually tied in a bun. At the time of his disappearance, he was in Bangsar, a popular nightlife district in Kuala Lumpur.
Call for Public Help
As the search intensifies, both British and Malaysian authorities, along with Jordan&rsquo;s loved ones, are urging the public to assist in any way possible. Whether through sightings, CCTV footage, or conversations overheard on the night of 27 May, even the smallest detail could be crucial in tracing his whereabouts.
Anyone with relevant information is urged to immediately contact the authorities or reach out to Leanne directly. The family remains hopeful that Jordan will be found safe, but as time passes, their concern grows ever deeper.
