Nowadays, it's pretty common for many of us to start binge-watching shows, especially if it&rsquo;s K-Drama. In recent years, Korean films and dramas have been one of the highest-viewed shows on Netflix.
In fact, Netflix themselves have invested over $500 million (~RM2.16 billion) in South Korean production in the past two years and it doesn&rsquo;t look like it&rsquo;s going to stop anytime soon. One of the most successful shows to date would be Squad Game which gained over 1.7 billion views on the platform.
Dramas Portraying Similarly &ldquo;Scary&rdquo; Portrayals Of Bullying Cases

Have you ever asked yourself, how do directors manage to portray very chilling bullying scenes in some dramas? Recently, Netflix released one of their latest revenge dramas, &ldquo;The Glory&rdquo; started by Song Hye-kyo and Lee Do-hyun.

Song Hye-kyo plays the titular role of Moon Dong-eun who quit her studies after being constantly bullied and facing major physical abuse by Park Yeon-jin and her gang of friends. Her character had then hatched an elaborate plan to get back at the bullies and avenge Park Yeon-jin and her gang.
The 16-episode series portrays several twists and turns of Moon Dong-eun&rsquo;s life and was well received by fans.

Little that viewers know; they were left shocked to learn that a few of the scenes from the drama was inspired by real-life incidents. One of the incidents, in particular, reminded viewers about a horrific violence case in a high school that took place 17 years ago. The said incident was the &ldquo;hair curler bullying&rdquo; scene and it happened at a girl&rsquo;s middle school in Cheongju, North Chungcheong province in May 2006.

The scene showed that Park Yeon-jin had burned Moon Dong-eun&rsquo;s body with the hair curler in the school&rsquo;s gym after she had reported to authorities for violence in the school. Despite efforts of the victim reaching out to the authorities and her teacher for assistance, no one had come to her aid as she was dubbed as underprivileged while everyone else was rich and well-off. The drama had been criticised by many and stated that the scenes portrayed were too violent to watch but it also gave viewers an insight into how violent peer-to-peer abuse is in South Korea.

Screenwriter Kim Eun-sook revealed that she was inspired by the idea after having a conversation with her daughter who is currently in her sophomore year of high school. She had worried that her portrayal of screenwriting style could land her daughter unnecessary attention in school. Her daughter even prompted the question -&nbsp; &ldquo;Mom, would you be more heartbroken if I beat someone to death or if I got beat to death by someone else?&rdquo; hence inspiring the script behind &ldquo;The Glory&rdquo;.
In the real-life incident, the media reported that a group of middle schoolers led by a 15-year-old had assaulted the victim (age 14) for approximately 20 days. The victim was burned with a hair iron on her arms and chest and was beaten by a baseball bat. The perpetrators had also confessed that they would punish the victim by ripping the scabs off her arms and burning her again which led her to suffer severe burns and a protruding tailbone which required up to 6 weeks of hospitalization.

However, in an interview with MBC Radio, a school commissioner revealed that real-life bullying cases are much worse than what is depicted in &lsquo;The Glory&rsquo; such as the <a href="https://news.mn/en/796693/#:~:text=The%20four%20students%20living%20in,Mongolia%20about%2010%20years%20ago.">Yangsan Girl's Middle School Assault Case</a>, the&nbsp;Cheonghak-dong Dormitory Cruelty Case, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.koreaboo.com/news/korean-elementary-school-sexual-assault-neighbor/">North Gyeonggi Snow Bed Sexual Assault Case</a>, and more.&nbsp;
Song Hye-kyo Praised For Her Performance

Despite critics stating that &lsquo;The Glory&rsquo; was too violent, many still praised Song Hye-kyo for the performance. In a video with Netflix, she stated that the role had really pushed her to her limits as an actor and performer with her wondering what she had been doing all along to receive such praise.
Right now, part 1 of &lsquo;The Glory&rsquo; is available on Netflix and part 2 is set to return in March 2023.
Now, this leaves a question, are shows taking it too far by portraying real-life incidents or is it good that they are being portrayed in shows as it helps push out awareness knowing that incidents like this have actually or could potentially happen again in real life?

Japanese pop-rock legends SEKAI NO OWARI&mdash;also known internationally as End of the World&mdash;have officially announced their return to Southeast Asia with their brand-new Phoenix Asia Tour. The tour, slated for October 2025, marks their first full-scale live shows in the region since their 2015 performance at MTV World Stage in Malaysia.

A catastrophic aviation disaster unfolded on Thursday, 12 June, when an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The crash, which occurred at approximately 1.39pm local time, claimed the lives of more than 240 people, making it the world&rsquo;s worst commercial aviation tragedy in over a decade.

Flight AI171, bound for Gatwick Airport, was carrying 242 individuals, including 217 adults, 11 children, two infants, and a crew of 12. The aircraft plummeted into a residential area, crashing directly into a hostel attached to a medical college in the Meghani Nagar neighbourhood during lunchtime. Among the deceased were hostel residents, including medical students, doctors, and their families.

Only One Survivor Pulled from the Wreckage

In a rare miracle, one passenger survived: a British national of Indian origin named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. Seated in seat 11A, next to an emergency exit, Ramesh was able to escape the burning wreckage. He sustained multiple injuries but remained conscious and coherent when transported to hospital.
&ldquo;Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,&rdquo; Ramesh told the Hindustan Times from his hospital bed. &ldquo;When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance.&rdquo;
Footage taken after the crash showed Ramesh bloodied and limping as he was helped into an ambulance. Police later confirmed he had managed to jump from the aircraft through the emergency exit, and that he remains the only known survivor.
Devastation on the Ground

The destruction was not limited to those on board. At least 24 people on the ground perished when the aircraft struck the building. Many others were injured. Witnesses described the crash as sounding like a bomb explosion, and some felt the ground shake as if during an earthquake.
&ldquo;My son is safe, and I have spoken to him,&rdquo; said a woman named Ramila, whose son had just returned to the hostel for lunch. &ldquo;He jumped from the second floor, so he suffered some injuries.&rdquo; Another local, Poonam Patni, recounted the horror: &ldquo;When we reached the spot there were several bodies lying around and firefighters were dousing the flames. Many of the bodies were burned.&rdquo;
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the victims. Authorities have asked families of the deceased to provide DNA samples for identification due to the severe burns suffered by many victims.
Cause of Crash Still Unknown
The aircraft had only just departed Ahmedabad&rsquo;s runway when it issued a Mayday call. Moments later, it vanished from radar. CCTV footage showed the plane struggling to climb before falling rapidly and disappearing from view, followed by a massive fireball rising from behind residential buildings.

Air traffic control confirmed the Dreamliner took off at 1.39pm and lost contact shortly after. The flight tracking website Flightradar24 reported that the plane&rsquo;s signal was lost less than a minute after take-off. Notably, video analysis suggested the landing gear was still down, which aviation experts noted as unusual for that stage of flight.
US aerospace safety consultant Anthony Brickhouse remarked: &ldquo;If you didn&rsquo;t know what was happening, you&rsquo;d think the plane was on approach, not take-off.&rdquo; The exact cause remains unknown, but mechanical failure or pilot error has not been ruled out.
First Crash for Boeing 787 Dreamliner

The Dreamliner had a reputation for being one of the safest wide-body jets, adding further shock to the tragedy. Boeing has since dispatched a team of experts to assist with the investigation, which is being led by India&rsquo;s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).
Worldwide Response and Support

They also committed to covering all medical expenses for the injured and pledged support in rebuilding the medical college hostel.
International leaders extended condolences. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as &ldquo;heartbreaking beyond words.&rdquo; UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the images &ldquo;devastating,&rdquo; and King Charles was said to be closely following developments. US President Donald Trump described the incident as &ldquo;terrible,&rdquo; while British authorities confirmed they were working with Indian counterparts to support affected families.
Three of the British victims were identified as Akeel Nanabawa, his wife Hannaa, and their young daughter, Sara. Gatwick Airport has set up a special reception centre for relatives of passengers.
Investigation Underway

GE Aerospace, the maker of the plane&rsquo;s engines, has also sent a team to India to assist in analysing the flight and cockpit data. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is working closely with Boeing and GE, while the UK&rsquo;s Foreign Office is providing consular support to affected families.
A Community in Mourning
The tragedy has left the city of Ahmedabad in mourning, with vigils being held outside hospitals and homes of the deceased. Scenes of relatives awaiting news or identification at the city&rsquo;s morgues underscore the profound human cost of the crash.
The incident has also reignited scrutiny over aircraft safety and airline maintenance standards, as many families question how such a devastating failure could occur so soon after take-off.

Tragedy In Ahmedabad: Over 240 Dead In Air India Crash, British Man Sole Survivor

What began as a suspected break-in at a family home in Bukit Rambai, Melaka, during the early hours of 12 June, has now been confirmed as a deeply troubling domestic tragedy. A 51-year-old single mother, Vernita Boon (also reported as Wen Qiu Yan in some sources), and her 21-year-old eldest son, Lim Boon Kai, were found brutally stabbed to death in the living room of their home in Taman Rambai Mutiara.
Initial reports suggested a robbery, but police have since revealed that the perpetrator was not an external intruder. Instead, the horrific attack was allegedly carried out by Boon&rsquo;s second son, a 17-year-old schoolboy, who is believed to have been driven by pent-up resentment stemming from constant academic pressure.
Early Morning Horror: From Bedroom to Bloodshed

When his elder brother entered the room in an attempt to intervene, he too was fatally attacked, sustaining stab wounds to the neck, waist, and back.
Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar stated that the youngest of the three siblings, a 13-year-old boy, witnessed the bloody aftermath. When he refused the suspect&rsquo;s command to leave the house, he was also stabbed but managed to escape. He was later found bleeding outside the home and is currently in stable condition in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Melaka Hospital.
Premeditated Violence, Not a Crime of Passion

Forensic teams and officers from the Batang Tiga police station arrived at the scene around 6am. They discovered bloodied clothes discarded in nearby bushes and recovered the murder weapon&mdash;still in the suspect&rsquo;s school bag&mdash;indicating an attempt to destroy evidence.
Police believe the attack was not spontaneous but carefully premeditated.
