Ayuni&rsquo;s lunch of choice for the day is from Teh Tarik Place! The restaurant was built on the basis of Malaysia&rsquo;s lepak culture and combining authentic Malaysian street food with a casual dining environment.

So, when you think of lepak culture, you&rsquo;d think they serve just finger food or bites, right? Nope! They actually have a variety of food on their menu. Ayuni had got herself a Nasi Goreng Pattaya (RM18.95) as her lunch of choice.

The Nasi Goreng Pattaya was very packed full of flavour and the portion is just right for the price. Unlike most places nowadays, the food served isn&rsquo;t worth the price but at Teh Tarik Place, it's very worth it!
Other than Nasi Goreng, Teh Tarik Place has a wide variety of Malaysian food ranging from Nasi Lemak, Nasi Kerabu, Laksa&nbsp; (RM9.90 onwards), Fried Noodles (RM9.90 onwards) as well as a selection of Roti Canai&rsquo;s (RM3.10 onwards) at an affordable price.

Taco Bell Malaysia has been celebrating a successful year with the sale of over 2 million tacos since introducing Malaysians the global food cult -favourite back in April 2021 with their first outlet in Cyberjaya. The restaurant chain now has some exciting plans ahead as they want to make it easier for their customers to get their hands on their favourite menu items.

Taco Bell has teamed up with GANZ, a self-taught artist known for his distinctive graffiti art, to create a unique piece of urban art for the opening of its 21st outlet in Malaysia, located in Sungai Mas, Kepong. GANZ fused his creative style with the most notable elements of Taco Bell's brand to capture the Live M&aacute;s brand spirit, resulting in an exciting interpretation of the brand. The opening date of the new outlet has yet to be announced.

The Menu Rahmah initiative has really taken Malaysia by storm recently. Restaurants nationwide had joined in the initiative as a way to help the less fortunate
to have better food security with the current inflation situation happening.
But if you thought small restaurants were the only ones practising it, food chains such as McDonald&rsquo;s and Texas Chicken are also practising the initiative by offering food at an affordable RM5 price.

It looks like this time, the Swedish Furniture company who&rsquo;s also very well known for its food is also joining in the initiative by offering meals as low as RM3.50!
Recently, TikTok user @aazhimah shared a video featuring a variety of food from IKEA at a low price, especially their mee goreng which is offered at only RM0.50 a plate.

But wait, why are these foods so cheap? In a report by Sin Chew Daily, IKEA has not officially launched a Menu Rahmah menu yet but has always provided customers with an affordable breakfast menu to choose from. The one specific menu of the RM0.50 Mee Goreng is specifically at the Batu Kawan outlet in Penang.
All IKEA branches in Malaysia provide an affordable breakfast menu which has different affordable dishes every day ranging between RM3.50 to RM7.90.&nbsp;

For those wanting to grab themselves a nice affordable local or even western meal, you can head over to any of the IKEA outlets between 9:30 am to 11 am daily. Aside from their selection of food for breakfast, those who want to grab a quick snack can also head over to the Swedish Bistro which offers a variety of food at reasonable prices too. Plus, they currently have a new menu that&rsquo;s available for a limited time only between 6 March to 31 May 2023.

Did IKEA Just Introduce Their Own Version Of Menu Rahmah? 

Whenever we travel around the world, every country has a dish that&rsquo;s known as its signature dish or even a &ldquo;must try&rdquo; dish. From appetizers, main courses desserts and everyone&rsquo;s favourite street food.
Without a doubt, street food can be some of the best foods to get out there cause it&rsquo;s cheap, big in portions and delicious. But no matter where we go around the world, Malaysians will never be convinced that a dish from a particular country can top the food we have back home.

Without a doubt, many Malaysians love themselves a Roti Canai. It&rsquo;s one of those dishes that you can have at almost any time of the day as it&rsquo;s crispy and fluffy and comes with a wide of dal or curry of your choice. It&rsquo;s also very affordable and easily available from store-bought frozen ones to the freshly made Roti Canai&rsquo;s at our nearby mamak.
In the overall list of street foods, there were 100 different types of foods on the list by the Croatia-based experiential food guide. We had shared the same rating as China for their Guotie and Spain&rsquo;s Espetos which placed #1 and #3 respectively.

According to TasteAtlas, Roti Canai originated from India and is known as Indian flatbread but it was later brought to several other countries around Southeast Asia. If we were to travel to other countries, they all rock different names such as Mataba in Thailand, or even Roti Prata in Singapore. Despite the different names, we will still get the same flavour and soft and crunchy texture we all love wherever we go.

How Did Other Southeast Asian Street Foods Do?

Looking at the list, we have a couple of Southeast Asian countries onboard. The highest-ranked Southeast Asian dish after Roti Canai is Banh Mi from Vietnam in 7th, Bubur Ayam and Tempeh Mendoan, Pempek, Pisang Goreng and Serabi from Indonesia in 13th, 14th, 37th 40th and 41st and lastly Lumpiang Shanghai from Philippines in 45th. If you&rsquo;re wondering where is Singapore on the list, they were placed in 99th place for their Char Kway Teow.

Meanwhile, for Street foods from other countries, we can see that Mexico has quite a few foods up on the board with 9 different dishes at the Top-50. Fun fact, almost half of the Mexican foods mentioned in the list all goes inside a tortilla!

Can We Trust TasteAtlas Ratings?

In short, we can sometimes trust it. In the past, the company had gained some heavy criticism from many, especially us Malaysians when our food was rated &ldquo;pretty poorly&rdquo; by the company.
Past ratings showed that TasteAtlas rated our favourite morning meal, Nasi Lemak, as &ldquo;Ok&rdquo; with a 3.5-star rating and it lost to Bubur Ayam (Indonesia), Pad Thai (Thailand), Tortang Talong (Philippines) and even Pho (Vietnam).

Meanwhile, the way that they ranked foods and cuisines from other countries had managed to spark controversy all over the internet as it definitely did not reflect the global perception of foreign cuisines.
Well, whatever the result or ranking is, every Malaysian out there will always have a soft spot for Roti Canai.

Roti Canai Drops Down To #2 Best Street Food In The World By TasteAtlas

The world is currently facing an issue. No, it isn&rsquo;t the usual climate change issue that Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has been complaining about, but it&rsquo;s the issue of the shortage of food.
According to the World Food Programme, there are 349 million people across 79 countries who are facing acute food insecurity. This is also a rise of 200 million people in comparison to the pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels.&nbsp;

The main cause of food shortage would vary from country to country as there are issues with conflict, poverty, economic issues, hyperinflation which raises the prices of goods and environmental issues such as drought and floods.
But what if we told you that the issue could likely be addressed sooner than expected?
Singapore To Trial Protein Powder Made Out Of &lsquo;Thin Air&rsquo;
Singapore regulators have approved a powder made from microbes which could potentially substitute meat.

The company Solar Foods is actually from Finland and they are a start-up that creates &ldquo;food out of thin air&rdquo;. The substance is a golden powder that looks like turmeric that&rsquo;s said to revolutionise the food industry as it will deliver a protein that will have a delicate umami flavour. The crazy bit is that it is &lsquo;made of air&rsquo;, microbes and solar energy.
Introducing Solein. The protein powder contains dietary fibre, fat and even the nutrients that&rsquo;s set to provide a basis for meat alternatives such as lentils, milk or soy. Solein contains up to 65-70% protein, 5-8% fat, 10-15% dietary fibre and 3-5% mineral nutrients. For those concerned about how this protein is made, don&rsquo;t worry as the whole process does not harm any nor require animals or even photosynthetic plants.
How Is This Achieved?

According to co-founder Pasi Vainikka, he says that the production closely resembles the fermentation process of making beer or wine. The bacteria feed on carbon dioxide and dissolved hydrogen and nitrogen which later form amino acids, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins.
Carbon dioxide and water are harvested from the air via a process called direct air capture and an electrolysis process will happen to split the molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. From there, the microorganisms will grow and react with the gases in the bioreactors and produce Solein.

After that is achieved, access water will be removed and it will be dried into the protein powder. The good thing about the powder is that it is not harmful to animals and is efficient to make as it does not require many chemicals and only uses 10 litres of water to create 1KG of protein.
When Is It Available?
Singaporeans will be the first to try it as regulators were quick to approve it. It will first be offered in selected restaurants in Singapore as the city is dubbed as &ldquo;the perfect hub&rdquo; to test it in.
However, the commercialisation of the product will not be available in the country till 2024 despite its approval. This is cause the Solein factory is currently being built in Vantaa, Finland and there are production capability issues as the company can currently only produce 5KG per week.
Could This Be The Saviour Of The Chicken Shortage In Singapore?

According to a report by FMT, Singapore imports 34% of their chicken from Malaysia and prior to the import ban to help regulate the stock of chicken, they also imported chicken from Brazil (49%) and the US (12%) before adding Indonesia into the list.
Despite the shortage of meat, Singaporeans are already consumers of non-meat meals and plant-based food with 7% of its population identifying themselves as vegetarians. Vainikka says that Solein can be used as protein source alternatives such as dairy and meat and it can also raise the protein content of bread, drinks, snacks and spreads.
Now, this is pretty interesting. Perhaps with the help of Solein, Singapore will have better food than Malaysia (or maybe not). Jokes aside, we have to be pretty thankful for modern technology and hope that this product can potentially solve the food shortage issue worldwide.

Singaporeans To Soon Get Their Protein From Air?! For Real?

Everyone loves the idea of being able to travel, whether it be locally or abroad, everyone is bound to find something they enjoy. But when planning for a trip, aside from our daily expenses and food, we&rsquo;ll need to figure out a place to stay and typically most of our budget for travelling would go to our accommodation.
We all understand that some people do love the &ldquo;luxury life&rdquo; and would like to stay in a hotel, but if you&rsquo;re on a budget, you gotta do what you gotta do and pick something out that&rsquo;s comfortable enough for yourself.
Recently, lifestyle TikToker @iamlim.xk or also known as Ian posted up a video sharing his experience of staying in a shared room dorm in the heart of Kuala Lumpur during his solo trip.

In the video, Ian revealed that the accommodation had cost him RM40 a night and it was within a walking distance to KLCC. At the start, it looked like Ian had entered a fancy-looking lobby as the video showed the Mercu Summer Suite along Jalan Cendana in KL.

However, upon wanting to get to the dorm, he did not have an access card and had to register at the security counter just like every visitor in the building. He was later escorted into the lift and headed up to the 12th floor where the dorm unit was situated. To his shock, there was a concierge desk inside that was surrounded by the basic amenities made available to those living in the dorm.
The real shock came when Ian found out the state of the dorm room had as many as 10 bunk beds squeezed into a small room. He even described it as if he was &ldquo;living in a refugee camp&rdquo;.

He then gave a tour of his living space and stated that each bed had 1 light, 1 power outlet and a curtain for privacy. Despite the price of the accommodation, it was in quite a &ldquo;horrid&rdquo; state as the bedsheets were not clean, the towel provided to guests smelt like &lsquo;cockroaches&rsquo; and he had to share a single bathroom with 10 other people.

By the looks of things, for RM40, I don&rsquo;t think we can complain too much as previously there was a Malaysian who showed a room rental for RM300 a month with the smallest space possible.

At the end of the video, despite needing to stay in a refugee-style room, Ian had given the staff service a 10/10 for being friendly. Despite the rating, he still questions how the owners of the place could run such a place. Is it the best experience he&rsquo;s had for a stay? No. But due to the RM40 price tag, he can&rsquo;t argue with the price.
If you think of it, the living condition of the dorm reminded me of the Hong Kong &ldquo;coffin houses&rdquo; where there were around 20 sub-units of plywood bunks built into a small space. Plus, the rental for it is around RM1,361 a month.
