Have you ever been in a situation where you&rsquo;re enjoying a meal with friends and you always have that one person who&rsquo;s always on their phone no matter what it is? Yeah, unfortunately, this current generation cannot live without their phones at all.
It's true though, our phones have really become part of our lives as we can take pictures and videos, shop online and communicate with others no matter where they are in the world. But for us to do so, we&rsquo;ll need to take care of the phones very well.
Student Scammed Of A Screen Protector
A student took to Facebook to post her experience of how she had been scammed RM1,575 for a screen protector on a group called &ldquo;KL Blowing Water Station&rdquo;.

She explained the story that she had met the promoter while passing Petaling Street. Despite her attempts of avoiding him, the promoter still approached her and offered to change her screen protector and her phone cover for only RM25.
As she looked at her phone, she figured that her phone&rsquo;s screen protector needed to be replaced. After thinking properly, she said to herself that she&rsquo;ll support the man and followed him to the mobile repair store.
Upon arriving, the promoter asked for her IC and stated that the screen protector has an insurance plan that he wanted to register. Without thinking much at the time, she figured that the insurance was the warranty and found it reasonable for the salesperson to require it for registration.
Shocked To See The Final Price Of The Screen Protector And Insurance

The salesperson&rsquo;s colleague had gone to register the &ldquo;insurance&rdquo; and she caught a glimpse of the screen which wrote &ldquo;xxx insurance 2099&rdquo;. She asked the colleague what is the form about and that colleague explained that it&rsquo;s the insurance that can be claimed if the screen explodes in the future.
Despite reconfirming that the price of the screen and cover is RM25 and the colleague confirming it, she was later sent in shock when the colleague informed her that the total is RM2,099 + RM25 as he did not explain that the &ldquo;insurance&rdquo; is RM2,099.

After arguing with the man back and forth with the man and them insisting that she understood the insurance would cost a bomb, she ended up paying RM1,575 in cash and had ended up leaving the store without taking pictures of it and a receipt. She also added that she had not gone to the police station to lodge a report nor did she want to expose the store.

Looking at the comment section, many netizens had told the girl that she shouldn&rsquo;t have paid the cash and should have lodged a police report instead. Some had even given advice on how to get out of the situation.

When the police arrived, they went straight to the store without needing to be directed, and the person there immediately cowered. The police will help you get back all your money and ask if you still want to file a report. That's why my colleague was afraid of being tracked down and retaliated against, so he didn't file a report. That's how you got scammed. Just file a report and blow it up. That street will definitely get cleaned up.&rdquo;

&ldquo;For students who come from out of town, it's okay to wander around in KL, but it's better to have a friend with you for safety reasons. After all, KL is a big city with some rough areas. If you are shopping alone, try not to get too close to salespeople, as there are many scams, especially if you are a woman, you need to be extra careful. Being cheated out of money is a minor matter, the most important thing is your own safety.&rdquo;

In the end, after all the comments by netizens online, the college student (who is not from KL) will be lodging a police report on the incident. With the help of a netizen online, she also revealed the location of the store, it&rsquo;s located at the Kota Raya Mall and it&rsquo;s a mobile phone store that&rsquo;s located at the right side of the entrance.

Petaling Street Scam: Youth Charged RM1,575 For Screen Protector “Insurance”

In a decisive move to address rising concerns over youth vaping, the Selangor state government has ordered all local authorities to immediately seize and remove advertisements promoting vape and electronic cigarette products. This directive covers both physical media, such as billboards and shopfront banners, and digital promotions seen on screens or online platforms.
The instruction was issued following a high-level coordination meeting on 16 May, chaired by Selangor&rsquo;s Executive Councillor for Public Health and Environment, Jamaliah Jamaluddin. The session, attended by representatives from the Selangor Health Department, Economic Planning Unit, district health offices, and local councils, was convened to discuss the prospect of a complete ban on vape sales in the state.
Backed by Federal Legislation

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has launched a newly-designed physical Malaysian driving licence card featuring improved security elements and a refreshed aesthetic meant to symbolise the country's modernisation journey. While the move marks a key milestone in JPJ&rsquo;s broader digital transformation, the physical version of this updated licence is not available to everyone &mdash; at least for now.
Physical Card Limited to Travellers and Foreigners
Beginning 21 May 2025, the new physical driving licence card will only be issued to two categories of individuals:

<li>Malaysian citizens who need to drive overseas</li>
<li>Foreign nationals residing in Malaysia renewing their licences</li>
</ol>
All other Malaysians renewing their driving licences will continue to receive only the digital version, accessible through the MyJPJ mobile application.

JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli explained that the physical licence remains important for international use, particularly in countries that do not yet recognise digital licences.
&ldquo;Singapore accepts digital driving licences, but many countries still require a physical document. So for Malaysians travelling abroad, we advise them to obtain both the physical card and the International Driving Permit (IDP),&rdquo; Aedy said during a press conference at the IM Intensif Driving Institute in Adda Heights, Johor.
Malaysians requesting the physical version will need to present evidence of overseas travel, such as flight tickets or international job assignments, when applying for the card. JPJ officers have been instructed to strictly enforce these eligibility requirements.
Modern Design Reflects Malaysian Identity

&ldquo;We are aligning with global trends. Many countries are digitising public services, and Malaysia is no exception. However, we understand that there will always be exceptions, particularly when dealing with cross-border travel,&rdquo; he said.
Reforming Malaysia&rsquo;s Driving Institutions
The new licence launch also ties into a broader reform effort by JPJ to raise standards in Malaysia&rsquo;s 248 registered driving schools and testing institutions. Aedy Fadly outlined three key focus areas for JPJ moving forward:

JPJ has vowed to step up inspections and will not hesitate to suspend or revoke licences of non-compliant institutions.
No Immediate Plans for General Distribution

Those who still wish to obtain a physical card without a valid overseas requirement will be denied under the current policy. However, the department hinted that further policy adjustments could be made in the future depending on public feedback and international developments.
Looking Ahead

The backlash was swift and fierce. Malaysia&rsquo;s former badminton star Datuk Lee Chong Wei and comedian Harith Iskander condemned the joke. Malaysia&rsquo;s police even sought Interpol assistance to locate Chia &mdash; a move that ultimately did not materialise. Singapore&rsquo;s Foreign Minister publicly apologised for her remarks, stressing that Chia did not represent Singaporean values. The fallout cost her professional gigs as well. American tech giant IBM dropped her as a regular broadcast host following complaints from their Malaysian office. Other scheduled shows were cancelled, including performances in New York.
Despite the criticism, Chia maintained her stance. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not going to apologise,&rdquo; she reiterated. &ldquo;This is the reality of my work &mdash; some jokes land differently with different audiences.&rdquo;
Turning Controversy into Career Opportunity
While she was shunned by some comedians in Malaysia and Singapore, the reaction in the United States was markedly different. Chia said she found a surge of support and respect from her American peers. &ldquo;One comic even praised my ability to &lsquo;jiu-jitsu&rsquo; a cancellation attempt and turn it to my favour,&rdquo; she shared.
