Since hotels can be overpriced during peak seasons, many have opted to book Airbnb as it&rsquo;s more private, fits more people and most importantly, more cost-effective.
Unfortunately, Malaysians who rent out an Airbnb will likely encounter a problem in the future due to stringent regulations on short-term rental services. Initially, this was only applicable to Penang and this time it&rsquo;s anticipated to be applied across Malaysia. A report by Blomberg says that Malaysia might be the first country in Southeast Asia to impose such restrictions.
What Happened In Penang?

In case you didn&rsquo;t catch the news, the Penang government has made a decision to prohibit the use of private properties, except for commercial spaces like service apartments, for Airbnb rentals or similar services back in May 2023. For a while now, Malaysia has been exploring ways to regulate short-term rentals for a few years already, aiming to tackle issues related to disruptive behaviour by tenants, often tourists, in residential neighbourhoods. The recent ban on the service in Penang has sparked renewed discussions on the topic.
According to Mich Goh, Airbnb&rsquo;s Head of Public Policy for Southeast Asia, India, Hong Kong and Taiwan, he says that Malaysia is among the countries nearing the end of discussions regarding the regulation of short-term rentals in Southeast Asia. However, rather than advocating for complete bans, the platform emphasizes the need for balanced regulations, recognizing the potential of the service to contribute to local economies.
&ldquo;It is critical that STRA (short-term rental accommodation) is regulated in a balanced and effective way that enables, instead of restricting, Malaysia&rsquo;s long-term tourism growth,&rdquo; he shared.
Are There More Details About The New Policy?

As of now, there are no updates regarding the upcoming policy but it's expected that it&rsquo;s going to be similar to the ones set by the Penang government. As for when it will happen, Malaysia will likely enforce the nationwide regulation by March 2024.

Recently, a viral post across social media and WhatsApp chats drew public attention to a potential scam involving QR codes. Shared by Facebook user Bang Rajan VII in a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/487246842365526/posts/1325506565206212/">local community group</a>, the post featured a video and several photos of vehicles parked in a shopping complex, each with what appeared to be summons slips placed on their windscreens.
At first glance, the situation raised red flags&mdash;why would cars parked legally within a shopping centre receive summonses? Many assumed it was the latest phishing ploy targeting unsuspecting Malaysians.

Upon closer inspection, however, eagle-eyed netizens spotted inconsistencies in the summons slip. A glaring typo&mdash;&ldquo;Jalan Pegankutan Jalam 1988&rdquo;&mdash;was one clue, but the biggest giveaway came from the plate number printed on the notice: &ldquo;MALF2025&rdquo;. It turns out, the &lsquo;summons&rsquo; was actually an unorthodox promotional gimmick for the upcoming Malaysia Auto and Lifestyle Festival (MALF2025), set to take place from 13 to 15 June 2025 at Sepang International Circuit. The official website of the event was even listed discreetly at the bottom of the slip.

Although Perodua will not offer a battery swapping service at this stage, customers facing battery-related issues can have the high-voltage unit replaced in just 30 minutes at designated Perodua service centres. Each battery will also be embedded with a unique identification system for real-time tracking and safety verification.
Built with Malaysia in Mind: Local Components and Long-Term Value
