A timepiece is often regarded as one of the finest accessories to complement any outfit, adding a touch of sophistication and completing the overall look. Whether it exudes classic elegance or vibrant hues, a watch is designed to make a statement and set us apart from the crowd, enhancing our personal style.
However, a few months ago, Swiss Watchmaker Swatch encountered a significant challenge in Malaysia after the Ministry of Home Affairs conducted a nationwide raid, targeting all 16 Swatch outlets across the country between the 13th and 14th of May.

It was reported that a total of 22 types of watches from their Pride Collection were confiscated by authorities as the watch was carrying LGBTQ+ symbols which violates the Printing Presses and Publication Act of 1984.
At the time, Swatch CEO Nick Hayek said that the Pride Collection had not carried any political messages and contested that their watch's use of rainbows was to carry a message of peace and love as they want to give a positive message of joy in life.
Swatch Sues Malaysian Government

Months after the incident, Swatch has now filed a lawsuit against the Malaysian Government and the Home Ministry officials to seek compensation and return of the 172 watches seized. It was reported that the Swiss watchmaker had requested the High Court to issue an order to quash the seizure notice by the Home Ministry as it was worth RM64,795.
For now, the court order is for the ministry to return all seized watches within five days of the order. The company is also seeking additional compensation in the form of aggravated and exemplary damages. The lawsuit was first filed into the High Court by Swatch Group (Malaysia) back on 24 June and had named four respondents in it:

Swatch alleges that the actions of the Home Ministry officers were unlawful, arbitrary, and carried out without proper procedure or fairness, as they did not provide Swatch Malaysia with prior notice. It is noteworthy that despite offering the Pride Collection, the company had not received any complaints or caused any public or moral disruptions, nor violated any laws when they introduced older designs in 2022. Regrettably, Swatch Malaysia was not given an opportunity to provide an explanation regarding their watches before the seizure took place.
No Reply From Ministry

Prior to the lawsuit, Swatch had attempted to contact the Home Ministry on 9 June and demanded the return of their watch but was completely ignored. The company says that the refusal to return their seized items breaches their constitutional rights to livelihood and property under Articles 5,8 and 10 of the Federal Constitution.
According to an affidavit supporting the lawsuit, Swatch Malaysia's country manager stated that the company experienced significant loss and damage to its trading reputation as a result of the seizures. This has posed a significant threat to its ability to conduct business freely.
Following the seizure of the watches, Swatch reported immediate negative impacts on its business and trading figures. The case is scheduled to be heard in the High Court on 20th July, and Swatch has applied for leave for a judicial review, which will be considered by High Court Judge Datuk Amarjeet Singh Serjit Singh.
In judicial review applications, it is necessary to obtain permission or leave from the High Court before proceeding with the actual lawsuit.
The lack of responsiveness from the ministry is concerning, particularly considering the efforts made by the other party to establish communication and address the matter at hand. It is crucial for the ministry to be more proactive and attentive in handling this case.

The elaborate scheme has since unravelled into a cautionary tale involving deceit, international travel, and a courtroom reckoning.
A Theatrical Crime Gone Wrong

The suspects &mdash; Ye Yingxi, 18, a student at the Singapore Institute of Management, and his alleged accomplice Zhang Runbao, 23, a student at the National University of Singapore (NUS) &mdash; thought they had devised a foolproof plan to swindle Ye&rsquo;s wealthy parents. On 2 May, the pair orchestrated a dramatic fake kidnapping at a hotel along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur, replete with disturbing video evidence to support their act.
In the staged footage, Ye appeared half-naked, bound, gagged, and soaking wet &mdash; an apparent victim of waterboarding and abuse. To further sell the illusion, the alleged kidnappers claimed he had been beaten and strangled. Voice-changing software was reportedly used to create convincing phone calls demanding the ransom.
The intent was to terrify Ye&rsquo;s 40-year-old mother, Cheng Zhiwen &mdash; a successful businesswoman based in Dubai &mdash; into handing over millions for her son&rsquo;s &ldquo;safe return&rdquo;.
Family Falls for the Hoax, Then Calls Authorities

The emotional manipulation worked &mdash; at least at first. Cheng, believing her son was in mortal danger, flew from Dubai to Singapore and onward to Malaysia, where she lodged a police report and handed over the distressing videos. The Chinese Embassy was also alerted.
What followed was a large-scale investigation involving multiple Malaysian law enforcement agencies and the Singaporean authorities. With no signs of forced entry or abduction, suspicion began to mount. Immigration and travel records revealed that Ye had crossed into Malaysia via Johor Bahru voluntarily after reportedly playing online games in Singapore the day before the incident.
A Trail of Lies Leads to Arrests &amp; A Scam Rooted in Past Rejection

As investigators followed the trail, Zhang was arrested at Penang International Airport on 4 May. Ye was later found in Baling, Kedah, suffering from a leg injury. He claimed to have been released and sought help by contacting his grandfather in China from a local police station.
However, inconsistencies in Ye&rsquo;s story during police interviews led to further scrutiny. The entire kidnapping narrative soon began to fall apart under pressure, exposing the elaborate ruse for what it truly was &mdash; an attempted fraud.
According to reports, the idea may have stemmed from an earlier failed attempt to get money from family. Just two months prior, Ye had allegedly approached his grandfather with a claim that he had been duped in a cryptocurrency scam and requested 40,000 yuan (about RM23,900). When the elder refused to comply, Ye appeared to have escalated his tactics dramatically.
Legal Consequences and Courtroom Developments

An alternative charge under Section 417 &mdash; for committing fraud in concert &mdash; also hangs over them, which can carry a maximum of five years&rsquo; imprisonment or a fine.
During proceedings before Judge Azrul Darus, both students pleaded not guilty. Bail was set at RM30,000 each, with two sureties. The judge also ordered them to surrender their passports as part of the bail conditions. The case is scheduled for mention on 27 May.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Syafina Radzuan is leading the case, while lawyers Ernie Sulastri Ahmad and Ramesh Sivakumar represent the accused.

The incident, which occurred on the stretch of road between Gerik and Jeli, cut through the heart of the Royal Belum State Park and Temengor Forest Reserve &mdash; two of Malaysia&rsquo;s most biodiverse and ecologically critical landscapes. WWF-Malaysia outlined a series of practical, cost-effective measures that the government and road authorities can implement to save lives &mdash; both animal and human:

These solutions, WWF notes, have been tested elsewhere in Malaysia with measurable success. For instance, a 200-metre wildlife viaduct at KM157 of the Gerik-Jeli Highway, built under the Central Forest Spine (CFS) Master Plan in 2015, has shown promise in reducing roadkill incidents &mdash; but it's currently the only one across a 100km stretch of road.
Shrinking Habitat, Rising Conflict

Peninsular Malaysia&rsquo;s elephant population is estimated at fewer than 1,500 individuals, and their habitat is shrinking rapidly. A 2016 study by WWF found that elephant roaming grounds in the peninsula have decreased by 68% over recent decades, largely due to land-use changes, agriculture, road expansion, and urban sprawl.
As a result, elephants are increasingly forced to cross roads and enter settlements in search of food and space, leading to rising conflict with humans. According to data from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), between 2020 and 2024, there were 4,919 reported human-elephant conflict cases, causing RM39.4 million in damage to property, crops, and vehicles.
WWF-Malaysia is urging a more coordinated approach across agencies, states, and communities to protect remaining elephant habitats and minimise dangerous encounters.
Government Response: 39 Wildlife Crossings Upgraded

Authorities have also deployed electrified fencing, salt licks to lure elephants away from highways, and LED-based wildlife warning systems in several high-risk areas. While these efforts mark progress, conservation groups warn they are not enough unless supported by stronger enforcement and more physical barriers to prevent accidents.
Calls for Broader, Tech-Based Solutions

<li>Do not stop to take photos or approach elephants. These are wild animals and can react unpredictably.</li>
<li>Turn back if an elephant displays warning signs such as ear flapping, trumpeting, or mock charges.</li>
</ul>
Remember, elephants can move up to 40km/h and may attack if threatened.

NCT Dream Is Bringing A Two-Day Concert To Malaysia In December 2025!

More than a decade after the horrific downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, the United Nations&rsquo; aviation body has formally ruled that the Russian Federation was responsible for the 2014 air disaster over eastern Ukraine, which killed all 298 people on board. The decision marks a significant step in the long quest for truth, justice, and accountability led by the governments of Australia and the Netherlands.
MH17 Shot Down by Russian Missile Over War-Torn Ukraine

On 17 July 2014, MH17, a Boeing 777 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was shot down mid-flight while traversing Ukrainian airspace over the Donetsk region&mdash;an area engulfed in armed conflict between Ukrainian government forces and Russian-backed separatists.
Investigations later confirmed the aircraft was struck by a Russian-made Buk surface-to-air missile launched from territory controlled by pro-Russian militants. The crash resulted in the deaths of 283 passengers and 15 crew members. Among the victims were 196 Dutch nationals, 43 Malaysians, 38 Australians, 27 from Australia (including residents), 12 Indonesians, 10 Britons, 4 Germans, 4 Belgians, 3 Filipinos, 1 Canadian and 1 New Zealander.
The tragedy sent shockwaves around the globe, coming just four months after the disappearance of MH370, another Malaysia Airlines flight, whose fate remains unresolved.
ICAO Ruling: Russia Violated International Air Law

On 12 May 2025, the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)&mdash;a specialised agency of the United Nations&mdash;ruled that Russia had violated international air law by failing to uphold its obligations under the Chicago Convention. The convention obliges all signatory states to &ldquo;refrain from the use of weapons against civil aircraft in flight.&rdquo;
The ruling followed a formal complaint lodged in 2022 by the governments of Australia and the Netherlands. The ICAO Council determined that the claims made were &ldquo;well-founded in fact and law,&rdquo; and that Russia had not only failed in its duty to protect civil aviation but also breached its international responsibilities.
Although ICAO lacks direct enforcement powers, its decisions carry substantial moral weight among its 193 member states and help shape global aviation norms.
Call for Reparations: Australia and the Netherlands Respond

Both Australia and the Netherlands have welcomed the ruling as a landmark development in the MH17 case. Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp described the decision as &ldquo;an important step towards establishing the truth and achieving justice and accountability for all victims of Flight MH17, and their families and loved ones.&rdquo;
He added that the ruling also served a broader purpose: &ldquo;It sends a clear message to the international community&mdash;states cannot violate international law with impunity.&rdquo;
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong echoed those sentiments, calling the ruling a &ldquo;historic moment in the pursuit of truth, justice and accountability.&rdquo; She urged Russia to face up to its role in the disaster and begin negotiations for reparations.
&ldquo;We call upon Russia to finally take responsibility for this horrific act of violence and make reparations for its egregious conduct, as required under international law,&rdquo; Wong said.
Both countries are now pushing for the ICAO to move swiftly in determining the form of legal redress and reparations, with further deliberations expected in the coming weeks.
Legal Background: Previous Court Rulings and Moscow&rsquo;s Denials

However, due to Russia&rsquo;s refusal to extradite its citizens and its denunciation of the ruling as &ldquo;scandalous,&rdquo; none of the convicted individuals have served jail time.
Adding to the complexity, a 2023 investigation revealed intelligence suggesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin had personally approved the missile transfer to the separatists. Despite this, the investigation into other potential suspects was halted due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
Russia has consistently denied any involvement in the downing of MH17 and has refused to cooperate with international judicial efforts. In 2020, Moscow formally withdrew from talks with Australia and the Netherlands on accountability measures.
Malaysia&rsquo;s Role and Continuing Global Impact

Just how bad is it? In 2024 alone, online scams reportedly cost Malaysia a staggering RM54.02 billion&mdash;approximately 3% of the country&rsquo;s GDP. Perhaps even more alarming is that up to 70% of scam victims never lodged a report, reflecting widespread scepticism about the reporting process and its effectiveness.
A Bold Marketing Stunt&mdash;or a Risky One?

Recently, a viral post across social media and WhatsApp chats drew public attention to a potential scam involving QR codes. Shared by Facebook user Bang Rajan VII in a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/487246842365526/posts/1325506565206212/">local community group</a>, the post featured a video and several photos of vehicles parked in a shopping complex, each with what appeared to be summons slips placed on their windscreens.
At first glance, the situation raised red flags&mdash;why would cars parked legally within a shopping centre receive summonses? Many assumed it was the latest phishing ploy targeting unsuspecting Malaysians.

Upon closer inspection, however, eagle-eyed netizens spotted inconsistencies in the summons slip. A glaring typo&mdash;&ldquo;Jalan Pegankutan Jalam 1988&rdquo;&mdash;was one clue, but the biggest giveaway came from the plate number printed on the notice: &ldquo;MALF2025&rdquo;. It turns out, the &lsquo;summons&rsquo; was actually an unorthodox promotional gimmick for the upcoming Malaysia Auto and Lifestyle Festival (MALF2025), set to take place from 13 to 15 June 2025 at Sepang International Circuit. The official website of the event was even listed discreetly at the bottom of the slip.

Public Reactions: Raising Awareness or Spreading Confusion?
While the marketing stunt has certainly earned points for creativity, it also raises serious concerns. In a time when Malaysians are increasingly vulnerable to phishing scams, such a tactic can blur the lines between humour and harm. Many who encountered the QR code&mdash;and the faux summons&mdash;believed it to be genuine and shared it as a warning.
Although this shows that Malaysians are keen to look out for one another by spreading awareness, it also highlights the ease with which misinformation can circulate. In this case, it may even backfire on the event organisers, as users online may accuse them of insensitivity or irresponsibility, especially considering the current climate of digital fear and scam fatigue.

So, Are QR Codes on Tickets Safe?
In short: not all QR codes are scams. QR codes are now commonplace on tickets, menus, flyers, and parking apps&mdash;but caution is always advised. As this incident shows, even a clever marketing move can be misinterpreted, especially when trust in digital platforms is already on shaky ground.
So, while it&rsquo;s unlikely that the MALF2025 QR code was malicious, the lesson here is simple&mdash;stay alert. Double-check URLs, scrutinise odd-looking documents, and never scan anything that seems out of place, especially when it involves personal or financial information. When in doubt, verify through official channels. After all, in an age where technology brings both convenience and risk, it's better to be safe than sorry.
