As Malaysians, we all know how terrible traffic jams can be, especially on rainy days.
When we're stuck in these jams, it gets pretty boring without someone to chat with. So, many of us end up using our phones while driving. And let's be honest, not many bother with phone stands. We simply put our phones on our laps because it's easier that way.

Last month, Facebook user Candi Mieci shared how a simple act of checking her GPS with her phone on her lap had led to her needing to turn up to court and facing a fine of RM1,000.
Now here comes the question, how are we supposed to use our phones when we are relying on it for GPS?
PDRM Clarifies Appropriate Usage Of The Phone While Driving

According to Commissioner Datuk Seri Mat Kasim Karim, the director of the federal police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, using your phone while on the road is not against the law. However, you must have a hands-free kit or a phone holder if you want to pick up calls or navigate using the touch screen.
Kasim emphasizes that the law is clear about not holding the phone while driving. Whether the car is in motion or at a complete stop in a bumper-to-bumper traffic jam, the driver is still considered to be in "active driving mode."

&ldquo;Using cellphones without a holder during such situations would mean diverting their attention away from the road. This can pose a danger and inconvenience when a driver is required to resume driving when traffic starts moving again."
In the event that drivers were to accidentally drop their phones while driving, it could put them at risk as drivers could lose control of the vehicle.
Kasim recommends that if drivers really need to use their phones, it's safer to pull over and park their vehicle first before grabbing their phone. Keep in mind that stopping on an emergency lane without a good reason is also considered an offence.
How Much Is The Penalty For Committing The Offence?
Under the law, Rule 17A, LN166/59 of the Road Transport Act 1987 states that first-time offenders can be fined RM1,000 or jailed for up to three months and second-time offenders will face an RM2,000 fine and or imprisonment for up to six months.
Now we wonder one thing, how will this law be applied if one were to buy the new modern cars? For example, the latest E-Class from Mercedes will be able to watch TikTok videos from their screen&rsquo;s infotainment system.

The court ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the core elements of the offences, particularly the intent required for criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation, and money laundering. According to the judgment, the failure to properly direct the trial and the misinterpretation of legal standards warranted full appellate intervention.

Syed Saddiq, 32, had been convicted in 2023 on four charges:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for restraint and compassion following a highly charged student protest at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), where a caricature of his face was burned during an anti-corruption rally. In a move widely seen as an effort to preserve democratic space and uphold academic freedom, Anwar directed both the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) and UMS to refrain from taking disciplinary action against the students involved.

The directive was relayed by his senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, during the Prime Minister&rsquo;s daily briefing, emphasising that the future of young Malaysians should not be sacrificed simply for expressing dissenting views.
&ldquo;In line with the MADANI values of compassion and inclusion, the Prime Minister has asked that no student&rsquo;s academic journey be hindered. A difference of opinion must not come at the cost of one&rsquo;s education,&rdquo; said Tunku Nashrul.
The statement also acknowledged the symbolic weight of the protest, noting that the burning of Anwar&rsquo;s caricature was a stark reminder of the rakyat&rsquo;s enduring hope for stronger anti-corruption efforts, especially in Sabah.
Burning of PM&rsquo;s Caricature Sparks National Controversy

The Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally, held on 21 June at Lintasan Deasoka, Kota Kinabalu, was organised by UMS student group Suara Mahasiswa. The protest, which reportedly attracted around 100 participants, lasted for 22 hours and aimed to draw attention to alleged corruption in Sabah, along with ongoing issues affecting students, including a water supply crisis on the UMS campus.
However, the act that made headlines was when two students set fire to a large placard bearing Anwar&rsquo;s caricature and the words: &ldquo;MADANI: Protector of Sabah corruption.&rdquo; The imagery and bold message sparked both condemnation and debate.
One of the organisers, final-year student Fadhil Kasim, later took responsibility for the act on social media, defending it as a symbolic gesture rooted in historical student activism.
Activism Echoes Anwar&rsquo;s Reformist Roots

In his statement, Fadhil invoked the legacy of Anwar Ibrahim himself &mdash; who, as a student leader in the 1970s, led similar acts of protest. He pointed to Anwar&rsquo;s involvement in burning a copy of 13 Mei, a book by Malaysia&rsquo;s first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, during a student demonstration over perceived injustices.
&ldquo;We were inspired by Anwar&rsquo;s own activism. Just as he once burned a book he believed undermined the truth, we burned his caricature to highlight betrayal and hypocrisy,&rdquo; Fadhil wrote. &ldquo;I&rsquo;d like to think Anwar, upon seeing the video, would be reminded of who he once was.&rdquo;
He also added that the outrage from Anwar's loyalists &mdash; including youth groups such as ABIM and AMK &mdash; missed the point, as they were more concerned with optics and reverence than the actual issues being raised.
UMS: Burning Was &lsquo;Immature and Uncivilised&rsquo;

UMS, however, has firmly condemned the act. Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor described the incident as &ldquo;uncivilised, immature, and unreflective of the intellectual standards expected of university students.&rdquo;
He confirmed that 13 students had been identified as participants in the protest, and two were directly involved in burning the caricature. The university indicated that disciplinary proceedings were being considered under the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU). A committee of academics would be established to review the matter and determine appropriate action, including possible suspension or expulsion.
Despite the criticism, the protest&rsquo;s central message appears to have struck a chord with many Malaysians disillusioned by the slow pace of anti-corruption efforts, particularly in East Malaysia.
Police Investigation Underway

Separately, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun confirmed that the protest is under investigation for alleged breaches of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, which regulates public demonstrations. He said organisers may have failed to comply with certain procedural requirements.
Reports later surfaced that two student activists were detained in connection with the protest. This further intensified public scrutiny, with some quarters warning that criminalising student dissent could erode public trust in democratic institutions.
