Have you been to our Zoo Negara recently?
Usually, our trips to the zoo are aimed at glimpsing rare animals that aren't typically found in the wild here in Malaysia, like Ostriches and the iconic Pandas hailing from China.
But looks like our Zoo Negara has been doing very well lately as they shared that they&rsquo;ve received an increase in visitors over the recent months thanks to &ldquo;Oyen The Cat&rdquo;.

&ldquo;Oyen&rdquo; the ginger cat had been a hit on social media and resides in the Capybara enclosure. Despite it being a different animal, it looks like Oyen has been doing well as he&rsquo;s been vibing with them, joining them for feeding time and even naps.
Oyen was once an abandoned cat and went viral a few years ago when visitors started spotting him in the Capybara enclosure. Though unclear when he joined the community, he was spotted by staff during feeding time during the pandemic and has since been cared for by the Zoo.
Hitting Over 3,000 Visitors On Weekends
According to Zoo Negara vice president Rosly@Rahmat Ahmat Lana, the presence of Oyen and his friendship with the Capybaras over the past three years has been the reason 95% of visitors visit the national zoo.
&ldquo;Oyen is very popular, that&rsquo;s why I call him The Star of Zoo Negara. The number of visitors has doubled, especially on weekends,&rdquo; he said.

Unfortunately, if you were to visit the zoo now, the sign is not there after it was damaged. However, a special event to put up a new signage for Oyen was held on 8 August in conjunction with World Cat Day.

Wanting To Continue Oyen&rsquo;s Legacy
As Oyen has been very popular with visitors and those on Social Media, Rosly said that the zoo plans to continue on his legacy and that the staff are trying to find a partner of the same breed and age as Oyen so they can have children.

However, this will be quite a challenge for the zoo to accomplish as Oyen does not like to share the spotlight with other cars, even if it's with a female cat.

For now, the zoo has pledged its commitment to care for Oyen by providing him with nutritious food and always monitoring his health status. These days, Oyen has become increasingly more approachable which is a plus point for zoo keepers to attend to him in case he falls sick said Rosly.
It&rsquo;s very admirable that Zoo Negara is taking care of Oyen treating him just like other animals in the zoo. Hopefully, they&rsquo;ll be able to find him a partner soon enough and his legacy will continue in the zoo. 
Maybe it&rsquo;s time to visit the zoo soon and help boost up its income to give the best possible care to the animals there.

According to the Brickfields District Police, the incident began around 11pm on 1 July when a black Honda City, driven by a 28-year-old man, was struck on its right-side mirror by a red Toyota Yaris near Jalan Desa. What began as a routine fender-bender turned heated as the drivers exited their vehicles and confronted one another.
The situation took a dangerous turn when the driver of the Toyota Yaris suddenly pulled out what appeared to be a black pistol and pointed it directly at the complainant. The weapon was allegedly used to threaten the victim during the argument, creating a highly distressing scene.
Fearing for his safety, the Honda driver lodged a police report at 12.55am the following morning. Police officers responded swiftly to the report and managed to apprehend two suspects, aged 19 and 27, later that day.
Weapon Found to Be Replica Purchased on TikTok

Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood confirmed the detail in a statement, noting that the weapon was &ldquo;an imitation, not capable of discharging live ammunition, but still capable of causing fear and alarm among the public.&rdquo;
He further revealed that one of the suspects may have been under the influence of alcohol during the incident, although this aspect of the investigation is ongoing.
Four-Day Remand Granted

Additionally, the suspects are also being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960 for possession of an imitation firearm, which carries similar penalties upon conviction.

The case gained public attention after a video of the incident began circulating on social media, showing one of the suspects pointing the weapon during the verbal altercation. A ferry travelling from Ketapang Port in East Java to Gilimanuk Port in Bali sank late on Wednesday night (2 July 2025), just 25 minutes into its journey across the Bali Strait, one of Indonesia&rsquo;s busiest inter-island routes. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, the Sarawak government is taking proactive steps to prepare the next generation for a digital future. In a forward-looking initiative, teachers across the state are receiving specialised AI training, enabling them to introduce this transformative technology into their classrooms &mdash; not just as a tool, but as a teaching philosophy grounded in ethics, innovation, and impact.
This initiative is driven by a desire to ensure that education in Sarawak does not lag behind global technological trends, while also responding directly to the needs and aspirations of teachers on the ground.
The Moral Compass of Technology

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the training programme in response to a heartfelt request from teachers, conveyed by Deputy Minister Datuk Abdullah Saidol. During the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025, the Premier stressed that while AI can be a powerful enabler, its use must be tempered with moral responsibility and critical thinking.
&ldquo;We have to tell our students that AI is just a machine,&rdquo; Abang Johari said. &ldquo;A machine without feeling, without emotion. But we are human &mdash; and it is we who must decide how the technology is used.&rdquo;
Using the analogy of a kitchen knife, he explained that while tools can serve many beneficial purposes, they can also cause harm if misused. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s why education is key. AI must be used to improve lives, not to damage them. Our role is to guide that process.&rdquo;
He further highlighted AI&rsquo;s growing role in Sarawak&rsquo;s economy, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, and the social sector, making it imperative that educators are equipped to keep up with changing demands across all industries.
Hands-On Innovation: A Glimpse into the Training Programme

Over four days, more than 80 primary and secondary school teachers participated in a collaborative, high-energy workshop led by the IEEE Curtin University Malaysia Student Branch and Chumbaka Miri, a local nonprofit focused on tech education.
This &ldquo;Train-the-Trainer&rdquo; programme offered a dual-track approach:

Meanwhile, secondary school teachers joined the Young Inventors Challenge (YIC), which delved deeper into AI integration through PictoBlox, a visual programming platform, and AI-integrated Arduino hardware. Teachers were mentored by IEEE student volunteers, who helped them explore how AI could be used to solve community challenges.
One standout project was a visual aid device for the visually impaired, developed by a team of teachers with no prior coding experience. Using image recognition and motion sensors, they prototyped a tool that could guide visually impaired students through school corridors &mdash; a powerful reminder of how innovation can arise when empathy and technology intersect.
Empowering Educators, Empowering Students

According to IEEE advisor Professor Garenth Lim, the training reflects a shift in Malaysia&rsquo;s education landscape. &ldquo;When we invest in teachers, we don&rsquo;t just build skills. We spark a ripple effect &mdash; one that can influence an entire generation to see innovation not as something abstract, but as a tool for solving real problems.&rdquo;
Chumbaka, known for its storytelling-based approach to digital education, sees this model as one that could be scaled across Malaysia. The organisation emphasises inclusivity &mdash; ensuring that schools even in smaller towns like Miri are not left behind as AI and digital literacy become global imperatives.
Looking Ahead: From Pilot to Policy
The Sarawak government now appears committed to expanding this initiative statewide, with strong indications that similar programmes will reach rural and interior schools in the near future. Premier Abang Johari has reiterated his belief that AI should be woven into every sector &mdash; and that education is where this transformation must begin.
Deputy Minister Abdullah also highlighted the importance of collaboration between ministries, universities, and civil society in building a tech-literate population. &ldquo;The interest is already there among our teachers. Our job is to nurture it, support it, and scale it.&rdquo;

Afiq resides in Johor Bahru (JB), Malaysia, where he owns a sprawling two-storey landed golf villa valued at RM1.4 million. But to fund this lifestyle, Afiq crosses the Malaysia-Singapore border every single day to work as a Grab delivery rider in the city-state.

Beyond that, riders must stay constantly alert &mdash; navigating traffic, avoiding accidents, and meeting tight delivery timelines.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s either scorching hot or you get drenched,&rdquo; he explains. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s exhausting, and you&rsquo;re risking your life on the road every single day.&rdquo;
His typical day may not involve office meetings or air-conditioned cubicles, but it demands more stamina and situational awareness than many white-collar jobs.
Despite the hardships, Afiq says mental discipline is the key. &ldquo;You are your own boss, but people forget that being a boss is hard. There&rsquo;s no one chasing you to work &mdash; so you have to be consistent and motivated.&rdquo;
Acts of Kindness and the Human Side of the Job

Discipline, Not a Shortcut: How Afiq Built His Routine

He keeps detailed records, sets weekly targets (like hitting 180 orders), and takes advantage of platform incentives. On one particular week in May, he earned S$1,283 before incentives, and an additional S$150 bonus for reaching his delivery goal.
But it&rsquo;s not all sunshine and windfalls. &ldquo;If I take a week off, my income drops to around S$4,000,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;But if I work every day &mdash; seven days a week for the whole month &mdash; I can get close to S$7,000.&rdquo;

&ldquo;I feel less stressed, less cramped, and more at peace,&rdquo; he shared. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s the best of both worlds &mdash; I earn in Singapore, but I live in comfort in Malaysia.&rdquo;
No Career Ladder, But a Path to Freedom
While Afiq is proud of his achievements, he is realistic about the nature of platform work. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s no promotion, no HR department planning your career,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s not for everyone. You have to make it work for you.&rdquo;
He praises Grab for offering workshops and training to equip riders with skills, but maintains that success ultimately depends on personal discipline. &ldquo;The flexibility is great &mdash; but don&rsquo;t misuse it. Set goals. Stick to them. Show up every day.&rdquo;
And that, according to Afiq, is how a rider becomes not just self-sufficient, but successful.

In response to these challenges, the Ministry of Health has moved forward with legislative reforms designed to bolster Malaysia&rsquo;s specialist workforce and ensure fairer access to advanced medical care.
Effective from 1 July, the Medical (Amendment) Regulations 2025 and the Medical Act (Amendment) 2024 have come into force. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad described the changes as a major step towards creating a more transparent, inclusive, and competency-based system for medical specialists.
Key features of the amendments include:

<li>Streamlining recognition and registration of specialists from both the Parallel Pathway and local postgraduate programmes.</li>
<li>Ensuring fair and competency-based evaluation processes.</li>

Dr Dzulkefly added that the first wave of specialists under the Parallel Pathway would cover cardiothoracic surgery, plastic surgery, and family medicine, while genetic pathology would be included under the Master Programme route.
The reforms aim not only to fill existing gaps in specialist availability but also to provide long-term stability for Malaysia&rsquo;s healthcare system&mdash;by improving training pipelines, retaining local talent, and ensuring more equitable distribution of expertise across the country.
