Recently, there has been a growing number of individuals who have abandoned their quest to acquire cryptocurrency. The increasing costs and legal complexities associated with cryptocurrency acquisition have deterred many from further pursuing it. In essence, cryptocurrency trading has left some individuals financially worse off and at risk of losing everything they had, except for a Malaysian man who recently secured a legal victory by suing Luno Malaysia.
Man Awarded Nearly RM700,000 After Sueing Crypto Investment Firm Luno

Yew See Tak recently achieved a legal victory, receiving an award of nearly RM700,000 in a lawsuit against Luno Malaysia Sdn Bhd. The case dates back to 2021 when the company allegedly made unauthorized transactions using over half a million ringgit from his Luno account to purchase Bitcoin.
Yew's lawyer, Ong Yu Jian, contended that Luno had failed to adequately secure the cryptocurrencies held in his Luno account, resulting in the loss of almost RM600,000 worth of cryptocurrencies. The Sessions court judge, Sazlina Safie, rendered a decision online, ruling that Luno was negligent in the matter.
&ldquo;The court ordered, among others, for the defendant to compensate the plaintiff the sum of RM597,920.05 together with an additional RM100,000 as exemplary damages,&rdquo; said Ong.

As of now, Luno is not required to make an immediate payment of over RM697,000 to Yew. This is due to the fact that they have secured a temporary suspension of the Sessions court decision. The court has granted Luno a 14-day provisional stay as they await the outcome of their appeal at the High Court, contesting the Sessions Court's judgment. It's worth noting that Yew has stipulated that if the appeal is unsuccessful following the 14-day provisional stay, he expects the awarded amount to be settled.
What&rsquo;s The Whole Case About?

In his lawsuit filed against Luno Malaysia Sdn Bhd on August 25, 2021, Yew sought a court declaration stating his non-involvement in the March 6, 2021 transactions in his Luno account. Additionally, he requested compensation in the form of special damages amounting to RM597,920.05, as well as general, aggravated, and exemplary damages.
Yew is a registered customer with a Luno account, which includes a Luno wallet for handling cryptocurrencies. On March 6, 2021, he discovered that RM566,570.70 from his Luno account had been used for three transactions, resulting in the purchase of 2.730096 Bitcoins (BTCs). These transactions, occurring in a brief time, were deemed illegal.
The newly purchased BTCs, along with his existing BTC balance of 0.15106083, were transferred to an unknown account through further unauthorized transactions. Yew had never initiated transfers to this unidentified account before. The total value of the 2.88115683 BTCs transferred from Yew's Luno account, at the exchange rate of RM207,527.77 per Bitcoin at that time, amounted to RM597,920.05

Yew maintained that he had never authorized these illegal transactions, which took place without his knowledge or approval. He reported these activities to the police and suspected potential links to unlawful purposes like money laundering. The suspicious nature of these transactions, their rapid occurrence, and their significant involvement in his account funds raised concerns.
Yew accused Luno of negligence for various reasons, including failure to prevent transactions from exceeding daily limits, failure to verify authorization, failure to freeze the account despite suspicious activities, and failure to investigate and mitigate his losses promptly. Furthermore, Luno was accused of failing to detect potential money laundering activities and not reporting these transactions to relevant authorities, including the Securities Commission. Yew reported the situation to Luno's customer service on March 7, 2021, but the company did not find any suspicious activity in his Luno account.
Luno Malaysia&rsquo;s Response To The Allegation

In its statement of defence, Luno Malaysia refuted Yew's claims and provided a different sequence of events. According to Luno, Yew reported unauthorized access to his Luno wallet to their customer support service on the evening of March 6, 2021 (in contrast to Yew's claim of March 7, 2021). Yew requested the suspension of withdrawals and the recovery of approximately RM566,000.
On March 8, 2021, Luno informed Yew that they had locked his Luno account for security reasons. On March 9, 2021, they responded to Yew, stating that his Luno wallet had been accessed using his email and password, and all transactions were carried out through the Luno website and app on Yew's mobile phone, with each transaction authorized through a text message sent to his mobile number.
Yew further claimed on March 9, 2021, that unauthorized withdrawals occurred, stating that his mobile phone was with him during these transactions. He considered the transaction pattern questionable and suggested that it should have triggered anti-money laundering alerts. Later on March 10 2021, Luno stated that there was no evidence of compromise to Yew&rsquo;s wallet and said that the transactions couldn&rsquo;t be reversed due to blockchain technology. They also stated they do not have access to his Luno wallet and asserted that Yew is responsible for securing his own device and password as their duty is to only ensure all transactions are duly authorized.

Luno referred to Yew's acceptance of the standard terms of use, which disclaim the company's liability for losses or transactions resulting in losses. Yew insisted that Luno, as the custodian of his funds, had a duty of care and fiduciary responsibility to prevent suspicious and fraudulent transactions, as well as to seek his confirmation before authorizing any transactions. He claimed he was unaware of SMS authorization requests for the alleged illegal transactions and denied authorizing them. Yew only became aware of the transactions after encountering an "SMS exceeding daily limit" message while trying to access one of his online accounts. He argued that his Luno account had been accessed by an unknown device, and Luno failed to detect this unauthorized access and the depletion of his Luno wallet. Yew stressed that the daily transaction limit was surpassed, and authorizing transactions would not bypass this limit.
For now, we&rsquo;ll have to wait past the 2 weeks to see if the High Court will rule towards Luno or Yew receiving his payout of almost RM700,000. On a side note, the value of cryptocurrency is currently on the rise again which could lead to many attempting to trade the currencies out there soon enough.

Malaysian actor, TV host, and former Miss Grand Malaysia, Lishalliny Kanaran, has publicly come forward with disturbing allegations of sexual assault by a Hindu temple priest in Selangor. What was meant to be a quiet moment of spiritual reflection turned into a harrowing ordeal, one that the 28-year-old said has left her mentally scarred and emotionally broken.
On 21 June, Lishalliny visited a well-known temple in Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi, alone. Her mother was away in India at the time, and she had recently begun turning towards religion, exploring her spirituality more deeply. Though she had never been particularly devout before, she described feeling a sense of peace at the temple &mdash; a place she visited regularly and where a priest had been guiding her through rituals. That trust, she now claims, was exploited.

In an emotional post on Instagram, Lishalliny recounted the events of that day, saying that while she was engaged in her prayers, the priest approached her and offered to bless her with holy water and a protective string &mdash; a common Hindu ritual. After completing her prayers, she said the priest asked her to meet him in an office within the temple grounds. She waited for roughly half an hour as he completed blessings for other devotees.
But once inside the office, things quickly took a dark turn.
A Ritual Turned Invasive

According to Lishalliny&rsquo;s statement, the priest poured a strong-smelling liquid &mdash; described as rose or flower essence &mdash; into a container of holy water, claiming it was a sacred substance from India that was not typically used on &ldquo;ordinary people.&rdquo; He began splashing the water aggressively onto her face, to the point that her eyes stung and she was momentarily blinded.
He then allegedly asked her to lift her Punjabi suit, which she declined, citing that the blouse underneath was tight. Despite her refusal, the priest continued the ritual while standing behind her. Lishalliny alleged that it was then that he put his hands inside her blouse and under her bra, touching her inappropriately. She described being frozen in fear, unable to move or speak &mdash; a reaction many victims of sexual trauma experience.
&ldquo;He murmured prayers and held my head. And then, without warning, he put his hands into my blouse,&rdquo; she wrote. &ldquo;My brain knew everything about that moment was wrong, and yet I couldn&rsquo;t move. I couldn&rsquo;t speak. I froze.&rdquo;
According to her, the priest went even further, telling her: &ldquo;It would be a blessing if you did &lsquo;it&rsquo; with me, because I serve God.&rdquo; After the incident, she said he casually told her: &ldquo;This will be a lucky week for you. I&rsquo;ve done this for you.&rdquo;
The shock and betrayal were overwhelming. What was meant to be a safe, sacred environment had been corrupted &mdash; and the damage left behind was deeply personal.
Silence, Shame, and the Strength to Speak Up

For nearly two weeks, Lishalliny kept the incident to herself. She described crying herself to sleep, plagued by shame and fear, unable to make sense of what had happened.
&ldquo;I couldn&rsquo;t sleep because every time I closed my eyes, it replays in my head. I didn&rsquo;t know who to tell. I was ashamed,&rdquo; she confessed in her post. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve always seen myself as strong and brave &mdash; and yet I was broken.&rdquo;
When her mother returned to Malaysia on 4 July, Lishalliny finally opened up about the assault. Her family responded immediately. Accompanied by her mother and two brothers, she went back to the temple to confront the priest &mdash; but was informed by temple management that he was no longer there.
According to Lishalliny, temple authorities appeared more concerned with their reputation than her allegations. &ldquo;Apparently, someone had already reported him before &mdash; and no action was taken,&rdquo; she said. The chairman allegedly downplayed any relationship with the priest, claiming he had &ldquo;only met him once&rdquo; and did not know his whereabouts.
Undeterred, Lishalliny and her family lodged a police report on the same day.
A Widening Investigation

The case is now under investigation by the Sepang district police, with Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman confirming that the incident occurred at a Hindu temple in Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi.
The priest in question, an Indian national, was reportedly only a temporary replacement, brought in while the temple&rsquo;s resident priest was overseas. Authorities say his modus operandi involved sprinkling holy water on the victim as part of a ritual, before allegedly molesting her.
The case is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code for assault or use of criminal force with intent to outrage modesty &mdash; a charge that carries a maximum penalty of ten years' imprisonment, a fine, whipping, or any combination of these punishments upon conviction.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, who is believed to have fled the premises. They are urging anyone with information to contact the Sepang Police Headquarters or the lead investigating officer, Inspector Sathiyan Balrajoo.
Adding to the seriousness of the case, another woman came forward in the comments section of Lishalliny&rsquo;s Instagram post, alleging that she too had experienced a similar incident at the same temple on 30 June &mdash; just nine days after Lishalliny&rsquo;s ordeal. The case now raises questions about whether other victims may have been similarly harmed, and whether the temple failed in its duty of care.
Rallying Support and A Call for Change
Since going public, Lishalliny has received an outpouring of support from fellow Malaysians and international figures. Among them is Chinmayi Sripaada, an Indian playback singer and vocal advocate of the #MeToo movement, who commented on the post, urging Lishalliny to report the incident and reminded her: &ldquo;It is not and never your fault. It is not your shame.&rdquo;

His mother, Minerva Balisong, a 50-year-old critical care nurse, has made a heartfelt public appeal for David to get in touch, even just to confirm that he is alive. &ldquo;The emotion feels like a tsunami. We never saw this coming,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;We just want him to make contact. We&rsquo;re not angry &mdash; we love him more than he knows
No Warning Signs Before Departure

&ldquo;He was healthy and happy. There was nothing wrong that we were aware of,&rdquo; said his mother. &ldquo;He is an ideal student and an ideal son. He&rsquo;s a homebody who always comes home. When he goes out, he asks for permission and keeps us updated.&rdquo;
On the day he vanished, David left home slightly earlier than usual &mdash; around 6.30am &mdash; and told his younger brother that he had &ldquo;some things to do at school.&rdquo; Unbeknownst to his family, he had packed his passport and headed straight to the airport to catch a 9.30am international flight.
Later that evening, when David failed to return home, his worried parents began making calls to the school and eventually discovered that his passport was missing. The next day, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that David had travelled alone and had entered Malaysia on a 90-day tourist visa.
At the time of his departure, David had only &pound;1,200 in his bank account, and the family says he has since switched off his phone and stopped replying to emails. Born in the UK to Filipino parents, David has no known connections or relatives in Malaysia, making his choice of destination even more perplexing.
Family Left Reeling and Now Preparing to Search in Malaysia

The letter, also posted on his Truth Social platform, reflects the former president&rsquo;s familiar stance on rebalancing trade ties with US partners.

The blanket 25% tariff will be imposed across all sectors, separate from any existing sectoral tariffs. These include additional levies&mdash;25% on automotive exports and up to 50% on steel and aluminium products&mdash;affecting manufacturing-heavy countries in the region.
No Tariff for US-Based Manufacturing

To soften the blow, Trump offered Malaysian companies an alternative: relocate manufacturing operations to the United States. He pledged that products made within US borders would be exempt from the new tariff.
&ldquo;There will be no tariff if Malaysia, or companies within your country, decide to build or manufacture products within the United States,&rdquo; he said, adding that his administration would facilitate swift approvals &ldquo;in a matter of weeks.&rdquo;
Warning Against Retaliation and Transshipping

Additionally, goods transshipped from or through Malaysia to avoid higher tariffs will also be taxed at the highest applicable rate. This measure is in line with Washington&rsquo;s broader clampdown on transshipments&mdash;especially from China&mdash;via third countries in Southeast Asia.
The tariff rate, initially announced as 24% in April under Trump&rsquo;s &ldquo;Liberation Day Tariffs&rdquo; package targeting 49 countries, was temporarily paused for 90 days to allow for negotiations. Malaysia held formal trade talks in Washington from 18&ndash;20 June and had expressed hope for concessions, particularly for its electronics and export manufacturing sectors.
However, with talks yielding little progress, Trump extended the pause by three weeks before increasing the tariff rate by one point to 25%.
Part of Wider Regional Clampdown
Malaysia is not alone in facing higher US import duties. Japan and South Korea were also notified of a 25% tariff, while Indonesia faces a 32% rate, Thailand 36%, and Laos and Myanmar 40%&mdash;down from Trump&rsquo;s earlier April figures. Cambodia, meanwhile, saw its proposed tariff reduced from 49% to 36%.
Notably, Malaysia&rsquo;s inclusion alongside close US allies Japan and South Korea was seen by some as a sign of parity, albeit a painful one.
&ldquo;We are in the same club,&rdquo; one senior Malaysian trade official remarked anonymously, &ldquo;but we expected some reduction&mdash;not a hike.&rdquo;
