Since childhood, every woman harbours a deep-seated desire to embody the essence of a beauty queen, drawn to the allure of elegance and the captivating beauty that transcends mere physical appearance. Fast-forward to 2023, we have witnessed the realization of dreams and aspirations for numerous beauty queens, becoming the embodiment of &lsquo;beauty with brains&rsquo; and bringing pride to their nations. But, what about Malaysia? History doesn&rsquo;t stop there because this time, a twenty-two-year-old Manvin Khera marked and etched her name proudly in representing Malaysia&rsquo;s first <a href="https://themissglobe.com/participants2023">Miss Globe 2023</a> surpassing 50 other global beauties on November 17, Friday at Sports Palace in Durr&euml;s, Albania!

Hailing from Kuala Lumpur, the young model and aspiring lawyer stepped into the shoes of the previous winner, Anabel Payano from the Dominican Republic. Having said that, Manvin&rsquo;s achievements did not come easily as she had encountered numerous challenges to rise and shine herself as the &lsquo;number one&rsquo; in the world. For instance, she had to make herself qualified for the Top 15 and Top 5 rounds to be crowned as the &ldquo;Miss Globe 2023.&rdquo;

Even in the face of formidable competition from beauty queens representing various corners of the globe, Manvin navigated the challenges with grace. Ultimately, her winning led Katia Agbodo Rodriguez of Spain to secure herself as the first runner-up, followed by Anna Valencia Lakrini of the Philippines, Duru Esther Chidera of Nigeria, and Kirstin Yvonne Bangs of the USA as the second, third, and fourth runner-up spots, respectively. Despite the intense competition, each contestant showcased their unique charm, contributing to the global celebration of beauty and intelligence at the Miss Globe 2023 pageant.

Remember the iconic 2005 romance film "Sepet," directed by the late Yasmin Ahmad? Now, you can once again immerse yourself in its heartfelt story and nostalgia on the big screen.
In celebration of Hari Kebangsaan and the movie&rsquo;s 20th anniversary, GSC Cinemas is re-releasing "Sepet" for a limited run from 29th August to 8th September. While the Merdeka parade is set to take place in Putrajaya this weekend, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had originally planned a Merdeka Eve celebration at Dataran Merdeka on 30 August, featuring performances by local artists.
However, plans have changed as DBKL announced the cancellation of the Merdeka Eve celebration. The decision was made out of respect for the recent sinkhole tragedy that claimed the life of 48-year-old Indian tourist Vijayaletchumy.
For those who might not be aware, an eight-metre-deep sinkhole opened up along Jalan Masjid India, swallowing the victim into the underground sewage system. Despite search efforts since Friday (23 August), rescuers have only found her slipper and have now extended the search area to include the Pantai Dalam water treatment plant.

DBKL announced the cancellation of the Merdeka Eve celebration in a Facebook post, highlighting that the decision was made out of respect for the victims of recent incidents in the city. They also urged the public to honour National Day by expressing their patriotism in meaningful ways.
In a subsequent update, DBKL shared details on the ongoing search and rescue operation. The Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) team has accessed the upstream sewage channel from the tunnel at Wisma Yakin, where they are carrying out manual shoring and excavation work to ensure a safe operation.
The search is also supported by the Mineral and Geosciences Department, which uses Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to help locate the missing woman. The entire city remains on high alert, and DBKL is collaborating with other authorities to prevent further incidents.

In other news, the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), Dr Zaliha Mustafa, has confirmed that following the recent sinkhole incidents in Kuala Lumpur, the government has temporarily paused new construction approvals in the city. During this time, DBKL is working closely with geologists and infrastructure experts to assess and reduce the risk of future sinkholes.
Furthermore, the standard operating procedures for development projects will be tightened, requiring certified geotechnical studies to be submitted earlier in the planning approval process.
It's probably a wise decision to cancel the Ambang Merdeka celebration, prioritizing safety above all, especially given the challenges our city is currently facing.

DBKL Cancels Merdeka Eve Celebration In Honour Of Masjid India Sinkhole Victim

Let&rsquo;s be honest&mdash;when we travel by air, there&rsquo;s often a chance that flight delays could disrupt our holiday plans.
A report suggests that Malaysia could see between 93.9 and 107.1 million passengers flying in and out of the country in 2024, making the likelihood of delays quite high. Usually, when this happens, passengers have little recourse and are left waiting, hoping to make their next or connecting flight on time.
However, things are about to change. Airlines will need to step up their game to ensure flights depart and arrive on schedule.
Transport Ministry Says Airlines Must Offer Full Refund For Delays

Starting from 2 September, airlines will be required to offer a full refund to passengers on flights delayed by five hours or more, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. This new requirement follows amendments to the Malaysian Aviation Commission&rsquo;s (Mavcom) Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code (MACPC) 2016.
In a press conference, Loke clarified that the refund applies to passengers who choose not to continue with the delayed flight and instead purchase an alternative one.
&ldquo;This is an improvement for consumers. Previously, there was no such provision, and airlines were only required to provide food and similar services. Now, if passengers have an alternative flight, they can get a refund if their initial flight is delayed for five hours or more,&rdquo; said Loke.

While this is one of the new amendments, there are several other important provisions that consumers should be aware of. These amendments include:
<ol>
<li>Airlines must offer a refund via the original payment method for flights delayed by five hours or more.</li>
<li>For delays caused by exceptional circumstances, airlines must still provide a refund through the original payment method but may also offer alternatives like travel vouchers or credit points, allowing consumers to choose their preferred refund option.</li>
<li>Refunds must cover all additional charges, including fuel surcharges, taxes, fees, and levies such as departure taxes, passenger service charges (PSC), and carbon emissions fees.</li>
<li>Cancelled flights must be removed from all booking systems, including online and offline travel agency platforms, to prevent passengers from purchasing tickets for flights that are no longer available.</li>
<li>Airlines must notify passengers of any changes to the scheduled departure time (STD) at least two weeks before the actual departure, except in cases of unavoidable technical issues. This regulation will take effect in January 2025.</li>
<li>Passengers denied boarding due to overbooking must be informed at the boarding gate counter.</li>
<li>The time limit for consumers to file complaints has been extended from one year to two years.</li>

Netizens Have Mixed Reactions With The New Rule
On social media, the new rule has been welcomed as a long-awaited solution for consumers. However, some have pointed out potential issues, such as airlines opting to cancel flights rather than delay them or rebranding delays as &ldquo;re-timed&rdquo; flights instead of acknowledging the delay.
Additionally, some netizens expressed hope that refunds will be processed immediately, rather than taking the usual 90 days, and suggested that the refund policy should apply to delays of more than two or three hours, rather than the current five-hour threshold.

This is great news for frequent flyers, whether for work or leisure. However, the real concern is whether airlines will try to exploit the timing or &ldquo;redefine&rdquo; what counts as a delay to avoid the hassle of issuing refunds to affected customers.
In the past, we've seen cases like Malaysia Airlines flight MH165, where passengers were stranded for over 24 hours on the Doha-KL route, with ongoing unresolved issues plaguing the aircraft.

It's been six days since the tragic sinkhole incident in Masjid India that claimed the life of 48-year-old Indian tourist Vijayaletchumy.
Previously, Kuala Lumpur&rsquo;s newly appointed Mayor, Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif, assured that the city was safe despite concerns about potential sinkholes, stating that Jalan Masjid India and the rest of Kuala Lumpur were under control and posed no risk to visitors.

However, these assurances have been undermined by the appearance of a new sinkhole just 50 metres from the site where Vijayaletchumy fell.

The latest sinkhole emerged around 2:30 AM on 28 August during heavy rain, appearing directly in front of the Masjid India police post. The surrounding area has been cordoned off to prevent further incidents.
Dang Wangi police chief ACP Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman reported that there were discussions about possibly expanding the cordoned-off area. As a result, police have extended the closure to cover the entire length of Jalan Masjid India, including the junction near Wisma Haniffa, restricting access for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Other Sinkholes Emerge At Kampung Kerinchi
In Kampung Kerinchi, DBKL reported a drain collapse on Jalan Pantai Permai. On 26 August, to prevent further issues, DBKL installed safety ropes, water barriers, and cones around the affected area due to concerns that the collapse could worsen.

Efforts to locate Vijayaletchumy's remains have so far been unsuccessful, with BOMBA only having recovered a slipper belonging to the victim a few days ago. In response, two K9 units, which were instrumental in the Batang Kali campsite landslide two years ago, have been deployed.
Reports indicate that the rescue dogs, Frankie and Dente, arrived at Jalan Masjid India around 5 PM on 27 August. These specialized K9s, known for their skills in locating victims, have been working alongside their handlers since the day of the incident.
The department routinely deploys search and rescue dogs from its K9 unit for landslides and collapse incidents. These trained dogs are adept at finding both survivors and deceased individuals. The two dogs were also part of the rescue mission in Turkey last February, following the devastating earthquake that claimed 50,000 lives.
Fire Department Sent To Search In The Wastewater Treatment Plant For The Victim

The search for the victim, who likely fell into wastewater tunnels leading to a vast sewage network in Kuala Lumpur, has been expanded to cover the city's sewage lines. These lines eventually reach the Pantai Dalam Indah Water Konsultiom (IWK) Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa noted that the search and rescue (SAR) team had thoroughly searched the area where the woman fell but had not located he. The IWK will open valves along the 7km sewage line to aid the ongoing SAR efforts. The SAR team will enter the IWK channel to continue their search, as the sewage flows towards Pantai Dalam.
We hope that the victim&rsquo;s remains are soon recovered, allowing the family to say a proper goodbye. On another note, we trust the authorities will thoroughly investigate the sinkhole issue and carry out necessary inspections across Kuala Lumpur to prevent any future safety concerns.
