The habit of smoking is pervasive and deeply ingrained and poses a formidable threat to both individuals and the broader societal fabric. This unhealthy practice is widely recognised for its damaging impact on personal health, manifesting in a myriad of severe diseases such as lung cancer, cardiovascular issues and respiratory disorders. Beyond its destructive toll on individual well-being, smoking takes a heavy toll on the collective health and economic prosperity of a nation. The staggering healthcare costs associated with treating smoking-related illnesses place an immense burden on national economies. Addressing this public health challenge is a matter of individual responsibility and a crucial step toward building healthier societies and more sustainable futures.
Thus, the anti-smoking bill proposed by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and presented by Dr Zaliha Mustafa, the Health Minister, was unanimously approved in Parliament, which is a massive win for everyone. This bill will be meaningful for our nation and lead to a better and brighter Malaysia.
Control Of Smoking Products For Public Health Bill 2023

The bill was first tabled in the Parliament last year by the then Health Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin. During its first tabling, it was met with strong resistance by a group of lawmakers, while a vast majority of the public seemed to be in agreement with the bill. With Dr Zaliha Mustafa replacing Khairy Jamaluddin as the Health Minister in the new government cabinet, she proposed a new tabling on the 28th of November 2023 with amendments made by the committee.
The bill entails a comprehensive policy for matters relating to the registration, advertisement, control of the sale and purchase of any tobacco product, smoking substance and substitute tobacco product and other related matters. To be clear, this bill applies to both electronic cigarettes and vapes, so we guess there&rsquo;s no better time to quit than now, right?
On its third tabling on the 30th of November, most MPs and lawmakers alike reached a consensus in voting for the bill to be passed. Tan Sri Dato&rsquo; Johari called to pass the bill as the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat after Dr Zaliha delivered her wrap-up speech.
Generational End Game (GEG) Clause Dropped From The Bill

Amidst the celebration of the bill finally being passed, there were calls of strong criticism when the Generational End Game (GEG) clause was dropped from the initial proposed bill by former Minister of Health, Khairy Jamaluddin. GEG is a policy to ban people born after 2007 from purchasing and possessing any tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and vapes. This means that Malaysians born starting from the year 2007 onwards will never be able to legally buy tobacco products or any of its substitutes for the rest of their lives once they turn 17. This initiative was inspired when New Zealand passed legislation to ban those who were born from 2009 onwards from buying and possessing tobacco products. This move was applauded on the international stage, sparking the smoking reform in certain countries.
In her wrap-up speech during the final tabling, Dr Zaliha Mustafa, justified the omission of the GEG policy in the bill brought about by the Attorney General&rsquo;s Chambers (AGC) as the bill will result in different treatment of the birth groups directly affected by the bill. The AGC has expressed their concern that the legislation can be challenged in court once implemented for its contradictory clause against <a href="https://www.refworld.org/docid/3ae6b5e40.html">Article 8 (1) of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia</a>, where every person shall be equal under the law and have equal protection of the law.&nbsp;
Dr Zaliha also reiterated that while the Parliament has the authority to pass and enact new laws and determine its policies, it is crucial to consider what the AGC advises as they act in the best interest of Malaysians in providing legal counsel for the Federal and State governments. Dr Zaliha assured that the proposed bill is comprehensive enough to close any loopholes once implemented and promised strict enforcement.

In other news, Khairy Jamaluddin conveyed his disappointment with the &lsquo;watered down&rsquo; anti-smoking bill and the exclusion of the GEG policy. Calling the bill his &lsquo;brainchild&rsquo;, he claimed that GEG was omitted due to the pressure from industry lobbyists rather than possible legal conflicts suggested by the AGC. &ldquo;Anyway, congratulations to Big Tobacco and the vape industry. You have won,&rdquo; he said. Other attending MPs during the debate and voting session of the bill also expressed their concern and disapproval of the committee&rsquo;s decision to drop the GEG policy.
The Future Of Malaysia With The New Anti-Smoking Bill In Effect&nbsp;

The advantages of this anti-smoking bill are just the tip of the iceberg. We are sure there will be more in the future once the bill is fully implemented and in its mature state. Implementing an anti-smoking bill is a pivotal step toward fostering a healthier and more prosperous future for a nation. Beyond the immediate gains in public health, such legislation can yield a cascade of positive effects, from reducing healthcare costs and increasing worker productivity to creating cleaner public spaces and fostering a cultural shift away from smoking. The long-term benefits extend beyond individual well-being to encompass economic stability, environmental preservation, and international recognition for prioritising the welfare of its citizens. As a nation embraces the comprehensive advantages of an anti-smoking bill, it not only safeguards the health of its people but also lays the groundwork for a more vibrant, sustainable, and socially responsible society.
Pushing aside the criticism of the omission of GEG policy in the bill, this is an excellent step by the MOH to jumpstart the reform on smoking and nudge us to be a smoke-free nation in the future. One step at a time, they say!

In a X (formally known as Twitter) thread that has since been widely shared, user Fazeem recounted how he was trying to assist his sister and her friends in finding a new home, as their university dormitory contracts were expiring in early July. After searching online, he came across what seemed like the perfect unit listed on Mudah.my &ndash; a popular local marketplace &ndash; and contacted the supposed owner on 16 June.
A viewing was arranged for 18 June at Parc 3, Cheras, where Fazeem met a man who presented himself confidently as the unit&rsquo;s rightful owner. &ldquo;He gave me his IC, showed me a past tenancy agreement, and really played the part,&rdquo; Fazeem explained, adding that the man was so convincing that he didn&rsquo;t feel the need to question anything at the time.
Booking Fee Paid, Agreement Signed

Trusting that everything was in order, Fazeem proceeded to transfer a RM1,400 booking fee to secure the unit. He received a tenancy agreement on 21 June, which he signed and returned two days later. According to their arrangement, he was due to receive the keys on 26 or 27 June.
However, things began to unravel when the man suddenly demanded an additional RM2,200, stating that the remaining RM1,400 could be paid in July. This raised red flags for Fazeem, who replied that he would only pay after receiving the keys. The man agreed &mdash; but that was the last Fazeem ever heard from him.

By 28 June, the scammer had completely disappeared. Phone calls went straight to voicemail, WhatsApp showed the number as &ldquo;not registered&rdquo;, and the individual had deleted his account. &ldquo;He vanished just like that,&rdquo; Fazeem wrote, frustrated. &ldquo;I only wanted to help my sister and her friends find a place before their lease ends on 5 July. These scammers are too slick nowadays &mdash; always verify everything before handing over money.&rdquo;
Fazeem has since lodged a police report and is now awaiting further investigation by the authorities.

After sharing his experience, Fazeem was contacted by other social media users who claimed they too had been duped by the same man. One reposted tweet by user @ChristyMacr showed alleged photos of the scammer and his car, with another commenter claiming they had been scammed by him back in 2019, and the case was still unresolved.
&ldquo;He&rsquo;s using someone else&rsquo;s IC. That&rsquo;s not even his real name,&rdquo; another user claimed, suggesting a pattern of identity fraud.

This allows him to appear credible and professional to unsuspecting victims. A few users offered tips on how to avoid similar scams, such as using Google reverse image search to check whether the property photos are taken from public listings or Airbnb.
Authorities Urge Caution
Rental scams remain a persistent problem in Malaysia, especially in urban areas like Kuala Lumpur where demand for housing is high. Victims are often students or young adults, unfamiliar with rental procedures and under pressure to secure accommodation quickly.
The police have reminded the public to remain vigilant and verify all documentation, including ownership papers, tenancy agreements, and landlord identification. Transactions should never be completed without viewing the property and confirming ownership with building management or online property databases.
Although netizens have pointed out that the scammer has been operating for some time, we hope the authorities will act swiftly and decisively to bring him to justice, especially given the growing number of victims who have fallen prey to his deceit.

Apartment Rental Scam in Cheras: Man Duped While Helping Sister Find A Home

A minor traffic accident in Taman Desa quickly escalated into a serious confrontation after one of the parties involved allegedly brandished a fake pistol, leading to the arrest of two men. The alarming incident, which unfolded late on Monday night, has reignited concerns over public safety and the growing trend of imitation weapons being purchased online.
Late-Night Collision Escalates into Threat

According to the Brickfields District Police, the incident began around 11pm on 1 July when a black Honda City, driven by a 28-year-old man, was struck on its right-side mirror by a red Toyota Yaris near Jalan Desa. What began as a routine fender-bender turned heated as the drivers exited their vehicles and confronted one another.
The situation took a dangerous turn when the driver of the Toyota Yaris suddenly pulled out what appeared to be a black pistol and pointed it directly at the complainant. The weapon was allegedly used to threaten the victim during the argument, creating a highly distressing scene.
Fearing for his safety, the Honda driver lodged a police report at 12.55am the following morning. Police officers responded swiftly to the report and managed to apprehend two suspects, aged 19 and 27, later that day.
Weapon Found to Be Replica Purchased on TikTok

Initial investigations revealed that the weapon used in the confrontation was not a real firearm but a replica pistol. According to police, the fake gun had been purchased through the popular social media platform TikTok by one of the suspects.
Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood confirmed the detail in a statement, noting that the weapon was &ldquo;an imitation, not capable of discharging live ammunition, but still capable of causing fear and alarm among the public.&rdquo;
He further revealed that one of the suspects may have been under the influence of alcohol during the incident, although this aspect of the investigation is ongoing.
Four-Day Remand Granted

Additionally, the suspects are also being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960 for possession of an imitation firearm, which carries similar penalties upon conviction.

The case gained public attention after a video of the incident began circulating on social media, showing one of the suspects pointing the weapon during the verbal altercation. The footage drew strong criticism from netizens, with many expressing concern over the ease of access to imitation firearms online, especially through unregulated platforms such as TikTok.
&ldquo;This kind of behaviour is not just reckless; it&rsquo;s downright dangerous,&rdquo; said one local resident interviewed near the scene. &ldquo;You never know what&rsquo;s real and what&rsquo;s fake &mdash; and in a tense moment, it could cost someone their life.&rdquo;

Police Urge Public Vigilance
In light of the incident, Assistant Commissioner Ku Mashariman urged the public to remain calm during road accidents and avoid letting tempers flare into violence. He also encouraged anyone who witnesses criminal acts or suspicious activity to report them to the authorities without hesitation.
&ldquo;The public must understand that road rage incidents can have serious consequences. Brandishing any form of weapon, even an imitation, is a criminal offence that we take very seriously,&rdquo; he said.

Road Rage Turns Hostile In Taman Desa: Two Arrested After Brandishing Fake Gun

A ferry travelling from Ketapang Port in East Java to Gilimanuk Port in Bali sank late on Wednesday night (2 July 2025), just 25 minutes into its journey across the Bali Strait, one of Indonesia&rsquo;s busiest inter-island routes. The ferry, named KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, was carrying 65 people on board&mdash;53 passengers and 12 crew members&mdash;along with 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks.
The ferry capsized at approximately 11:20pm, and by 12:22am, it was found overturned and drifting. Initial reports point to a combination of engine trouble and rough weather conditions, with waves reaching up to two metres (6.5 feet), contributing to the tragic incident.
Death Toll Rises as Search Efforts Intensify

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, the Sarawak government is taking proactive steps to prepare the next generation for a digital future. In a forward-looking initiative, teachers across the state are receiving specialised AI training, enabling them to introduce this transformative technology into their classrooms &mdash; not just as a tool, but as a teaching philosophy grounded in ethics, innovation, and impact.
This initiative is driven by a desire to ensure that education in Sarawak does not lag behind global technological trends, while also responding directly to the needs and aspirations of teachers on the ground.
The Moral Compass of Technology

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the training programme in response to a heartfelt request from teachers, conveyed by Deputy Minister Datuk Abdullah Saidol. During the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025, the Premier stressed that while AI can be a powerful enabler, its use must be tempered with moral responsibility and critical thinking.
&ldquo;We have to tell our students that AI is just a machine,&rdquo; Abang Johari said. &ldquo;A machine without feeling, without emotion. But we are human &mdash; and it is we who must decide how the technology is used.&rdquo;
Using the analogy of a kitchen knife, he explained that while tools can serve many beneficial purposes, they can also cause harm if misused. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s why education is key. AI must be used to improve lives, not to damage them. Our role is to guide that process.&rdquo;
He further highlighted AI&rsquo;s growing role in Sarawak&rsquo;s economy, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, and the social sector, making it imperative that educators are equipped to keep up with changing demands across all industries.
Hands-On Innovation: A Glimpse into the Training Programme

While details of the full-scale rollout are still in development, a recent pilot initiative at Curtin University Malaysia has already demonstrated the impact such training can have. Over four days, more than 80 primary and secondary school teachers participated in a collaborative, high-energy workshop led by the IEEE Curtin University Malaysia Student Branch and Chumbaka Miri, a local nonprofit focused on tech education.
This &ldquo;Train-the-Trainer&rdquo; programme offered a dual-track approach:

<li>Primary school teachers took part in the Junior Innovate (JI) stream, which introduced digital-making platforms like Scratch and Arduino. Through these tools, they developed interactive, game-based projects focused on real-world themes, such as promoting school safety, encouraging inclusivity, and supporting mental well-being &mdash; all aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).</li>
<li>One teacher shared that using games like &ldquo;Werewolf&rdquo; helped illustrate logic flow and decision-making in a way that was accessible and engaging for young learners. &ldquo;It wasn&rsquo;t just about the coding &mdash; it was about storytelling, ethics, and problem-solving,&rdquo; they said.</li>

Meanwhile, secondary school teachers joined the Young Inventors Challenge (YIC), which delved deeper into AI integration through PictoBlox, a visual programming platform, and AI-integrated Arduino hardware. Teachers were mentored by IEEE student volunteers, who helped them explore how AI could be used to solve community challenges.
One standout project was a visual aid device for the visually impaired, developed by a team of teachers with no prior coding experience. Using image recognition and motion sensors, they prototyped a tool that could guide visually impaired students through school corridors &mdash; a powerful reminder of how innovation can arise when empathy and technology intersect.
Empowering Educators, Empowering Students

According to IEEE advisor Professor Garenth Lim, the training reflects a shift in Malaysia&rsquo;s education landscape. &ldquo;When we invest in teachers, we don&rsquo;t just build skills. We spark a ripple effect &mdash; one that can influence an entire generation to see innovation not as something abstract, but as a tool for solving real problems.&rdquo;
Chumbaka, known for its storytelling-based approach to digital education, sees this model as one that could be scaled across Malaysia. The organisation emphasises inclusivity &mdash; ensuring that schools even in smaller towns like Miri are not left behind as AI and digital literacy become global imperatives.
Looking Ahead: From Pilot to Policy
The Sarawak government now appears committed to expanding this initiative statewide, with strong indications that similar programmes will reach rural and interior schools in the near future. Premier Abang Johari has reiterated his belief that AI should be woven into every sector &mdash; and that education is where this transformation must begin.
Deputy Minister Abdullah also highlighted the importance of collaboration between ministries, universities, and civil society in building a tech-literate population. &ldquo;The interest is already there among our teachers. Our job is to nurture it, support it, and scale it.&rdquo;
