Malaysia has been making notable strides in technological advancement, positioning itself as a critical player in the global digital landscape. Introducing &ndash; National Digital Identity (Digital ID). An initiative to transform virtual identification, specifically in enhancing identity verification for online transactions, is set to benefit the public and private sectors. However, this Digital ID is not to replace our blue MyKad, but it is a means to ease online verifications of user&rsquo;s identity.

During its launch last week, Communication and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil guaranteed secure personal data protection and reliable cyber security with the launching of the MyDigital app amidst the rising concern of data leak occurrences. Together with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems (MIMOS), the two government bodies will be responsible for the implementation and administration of the MyDigital app.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
In his speech, Fahmi Fadzil highlighted no biometric identifications such as facial recognition or iris scan are needed to activate one&rsquo;s MyDigital app. A snap of the user&rsquo;s MyKad and a quick fingerprint scan are the only two things necessary to complete the registration process. As easy as that!
Fahmi also debunked the ridiculous allegations of needing to implant chips in one&rsquo;s body to utilize the app. &ldquo;No need to get all imaginative,&rdquo; in his statement denying the allegation during the press conference.

In other news, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was the first person in Malaysia to have his digital ID registered at Perdana Putra in conjunction with its launch last Friday. Again, debunking the absurd claim made by irresponsible parties of chips being implanted into an individual&rsquo;s body &ndash; &ldquo;They have been watching too many Hollywood movies,&rdquo; he told the reporters. With the Prime Minister being the first person to register for the Digital ID, it is expected to boost the public&rsquo;s confidence and encourage them to integrate it into their daily lives.

Pioneered by MCMC as an initiative to meet the need to verify the identities of individuals who accessed electronic services and perform transactions and digital signatures to be utilized for government sectors moving forward. The database is also available for private sectors who wish to adopt its technology for their applications. But, of course, it is with strict governance by the administrative bodies.
This initiative aimed to support the government's digital service efficiently and enhance the development of the digital economy inclusively while elevating confidence in government and private online services. With an allocation of RM80 million from the Federal government, the first phase of its launch is set to serve 1.6 million users, a majority of whom are public servants.&nbsp;
An instance to better illustrate the ease of the MyDigital app is when an individual registers for the MyJPJ app, there&rsquo;s no need for them to start the registration process from scratch. With the database from the MyDigital app, the verification is instantaneous &ndash; no more fiddling around creating long passwords. I&rsquo;m sold! Where do I sign up?&nbsp;

In a X (formally known as Twitter) thread that has since been widely shared, user Fazeem recounted how he was trying to assist his sister and her friends in finding a new home, as their university dormitory contracts were expiring in early July. After searching online, he came across what seemed like the perfect unit listed on Mudah.my &ndash; a popular local marketplace &ndash; and contacted the supposed owner on 16 June.
A viewing was arranged for 18 June at Parc 3, Cheras, where Fazeem met a man who presented himself confidently as the unit&rsquo;s rightful owner. &ldquo;He gave me his IC, showed me a past tenancy agreement, and really played the part,&rdquo; Fazeem explained, adding that the man was so convincing that he didn&rsquo;t feel the need to question anything at the time.
Booking Fee Paid, Agreement Signed

Trusting that everything was in order, Fazeem proceeded to transfer a RM1,400 booking fee to secure the unit. He received a tenancy agreement on 21 June, which he signed and returned two days later. According to their arrangement, he was due to receive the keys on 26 or 27 June.
However, things began to unravel when the man suddenly demanded an additional RM2,200, stating that the remaining RM1,400 could be paid in July. This raised red flags for Fazeem, who replied that he would only pay after receiving the keys. The man agreed &mdash; but that was the last Fazeem ever heard from him.

By 28 June, the scammer had completely disappeared. Phone calls went straight to voicemail, WhatsApp showed the number as &ldquo;not registered&rdquo;, and the individual had deleted his account. &ldquo;He vanished just like that,&rdquo; Fazeem wrote, frustrated. &ldquo;I only wanted to help my sister and her friends find a place before their lease ends on 5 July. These scammers are too slick nowadays &mdash; always verify everything before handing over money.&rdquo;
Fazeem has since lodged a police report and is now awaiting further investigation by the authorities.

After sharing his experience, Fazeem was contacted by other social media users who claimed they too had been duped by the same man. One reposted tweet by user @ChristyMacr showed alleged photos of the scammer and his car, with another commenter claiming they had been scammed by him back in 2019, and the case was still unresolved.
&ldquo;He&rsquo;s using someone else&rsquo;s IC. That&rsquo;s not even his real name,&rdquo; another user claimed, suggesting a pattern of identity fraud.

This allows him to appear credible and professional to unsuspecting victims. A few users offered tips on how to avoid similar scams, such as using Google reverse image search to check whether the property photos are taken from public listings or Airbnb.
Authorities Urge Caution
Rental scams remain a persistent problem in Malaysia, especially in urban areas like Kuala Lumpur where demand for housing is high. Victims are often students or young adults, unfamiliar with rental procedures and under pressure to secure accommodation quickly.
The police have reminded the public to remain vigilant and verify all documentation, including ownership papers, tenancy agreements, and landlord identification. Transactions should never be completed without viewing the property and confirming ownership with building management or online property databases.
Although netizens have pointed out that the scammer has been operating for some time, we hope the authorities will act swiftly and decisively to bring him to justice, especially given the growing number of victims who have fallen prey to his deceit.

Apartment Rental Scam in Cheras: Man Duped While Helping Sister Find A Home

A minor traffic accident in Taman Desa quickly escalated into a serious confrontation after one of the parties involved allegedly brandished a fake pistol, leading to the arrest of two men. The alarming incident, which unfolded late on Monday night, has reignited concerns over public safety and the growing trend of imitation weapons being purchased online.
Late-Night Collision Escalates into Threat

According to the Brickfields District Police, the incident began around 11pm on 1 July when a black Honda City, driven by a 28-year-old man, was struck on its right-side mirror by a red Toyota Yaris near Jalan Desa. What began as a routine fender-bender turned heated as the drivers exited their vehicles and confronted one another.
The situation took a dangerous turn when the driver of the Toyota Yaris suddenly pulled out what appeared to be a black pistol and pointed it directly at the complainant. The weapon was allegedly used to threaten the victim during the argument, creating a highly distressing scene.
Fearing for his safety, the Honda driver lodged a police report at 12.55am the following morning. Police officers responded swiftly to the report and managed to apprehend two suspects, aged 19 and 27, later that day.
Weapon Found to Be Replica Purchased on TikTok

Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood confirmed the detail in a statement, noting that the weapon was &ldquo;an imitation, not capable of discharging live ammunition, but still capable of causing fear and alarm among the public.&rdquo;
He further revealed that one of the suspects may have been under the influence of alcohol during the incident, although this aspect of the investigation is ongoing.
Four-Day Remand Granted

Road Rage Turns Hostile In Taman Desa: Two Arrested After Brandishing Fake Gun

A ferry travelling from Ketapang Port in East Java to Gilimanuk Port in Bali sank late on Wednesday night (2 July 2025), just 25 minutes into its journey across the Bali Strait, one of Indonesia&rsquo;s busiest inter-island routes. The ferry, named KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, was carrying 65 people on board&mdash;53 passengers and 12 crew members&mdash;along with 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks.
The ferry capsized at approximately 11:20pm, and by 12:22am, it was found overturned and drifting. Initial reports point to a combination of engine trouble and rough weather conditions, with waves reaching up to two metres (6.5 feet), contributing to the tragic incident.
Death Toll Rises as Search Efforts Intensify

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, the Sarawak government is taking proactive steps to prepare the next generation for a digital future. In a forward-looking initiative, teachers across the state are receiving specialised AI training, enabling them to introduce this transformative technology into their classrooms &mdash; not just as a tool, but as a teaching philosophy grounded in ethics, innovation, and impact.
This initiative is driven by a desire to ensure that education in Sarawak does not lag behind global technological trends, while also responding directly to the needs and aspirations of teachers on the ground.
The Moral Compass of Technology

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the training programme in response to a heartfelt request from teachers, conveyed by Deputy Minister Datuk Abdullah Saidol. During the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025, the Premier stressed that while AI can be a powerful enabler, its use must be tempered with moral responsibility and critical thinking.
&ldquo;We have to tell our students that AI is just a machine,&rdquo; Abang Johari said. &ldquo;A machine without feeling, without emotion. But we are human &mdash; and it is we who must decide how the technology is used.&rdquo;
Using the analogy of a kitchen knife, he explained that while tools can serve many beneficial purposes, they can also cause harm if misused. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s why education is key. AI must be used to improve lives, not to damage them. Our role is to guide that process.&rdquo;
He further highlighted AI&rsquo;s growing role in Sarawak&rsquo;s economy, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, and the social sector, making it imperative that educators are equipped to keep up with changing demands across all industries.
Hands-On Innovation: A Glimpse into the Training Programme

While details of the full-scale rollout are still in development, a recent pilot initiative at Curtin University Malaysia has already demonstrated the impact such training can have. Over four days, more than 80 primary and secondary school teachers participated in a collaborative, high-energy workshop led by the IEEE Curtin University Malaysia Student Branch and Chumbaka Miri, a local nonprofit focused on tech education.
This &ldquo;Train-the-Trainer&rdquo; programme offered a dual-track approach:

<li>Primary school teachers took part in the Junior Innovate (JI) stream, which introduced digital-making platforms like Scratch and Arduino. Through these tools, they developed interactive, game-based projects focused on real-world themes, such as promoting school safety, encouraging inclusivity, and supporting mental well-being &mdash; all aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).</li>
<li>One teacher shared that using games like &ldquo;Werewolf&rdquo; helped illustrate logic flow and decision-making in a way that was accessible and engaging for young learners. &ldquo;It wasn&rsquo;t just about the coding &mdash; it was about storytelling, ethics, and problem-solving,&rdquo; they said.</li>

Meanwhile, secondary school teachers joined the Young Inventors Challenge (YIC), which delved deeper into AI integration through PictoBlox, a visual programming platform, and AI-integrated Arduino hardware. Teachers were mentored by IEEE student volunteers, who helped them explore how AI could be used to solve community challenges.
One standout project was a visual aid device for the visually impaired, developed by a team of teachers with no prior coding experience. Using image recognition and motion sensors, they prototyped a tool that could guide visually impaired students through school corridors &mdash; a powerful reminder of how innovation can arise when empathy and technology intersect.
Empowering Educators, Empowering Students

For many participants, the experience was transformative. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re not just teaching tech &mdash; we&rsquo;re shaping changemakers,&rdquo; said IEEE Community Outreach co-head Diandra Emilia. &ldquo;The atmosphere was buzzing with creativity, curiosity and a real sense of mission.&rdquo;
According to IEEE advisor Professor Garenth Lim, the training reflects a shift in Malaysia&rsquo;s education landscape. &ldquo;When we invest in teachers, we don&rsquo;t just build skills. We spark a ripple effect &mdash; one that can influence an entire generation to see innovation not as something abstract, but as a tool for solving real problems.&rdquo;
Chumbaka, known for its storytelling-based approach to digital education, sees this model as one that could be scaled across Malaysia. The organisation emphasises inclusivity &mdash; ensuring that schools even in smaller towns like Miri are not left behind as AI and digital literacy become global imperatives.
Looking Ahead: From Pilot to Policy
The Sarawak government now appears committed to expanding this initiative statewide, with strong indications that similar programmes will reach rural and interior schools in the near future. Premier Abang Johari has reiterated his belief that AI should be woven into every sector &mdash; and that education is where this transformation must begin.
Deputy Minister Abdullah also highlighted the importance of collaboration between ministries, universities, and civil society in building a tech-literate population. &ldquo;The interest is already there among our teachers. Our job is to nurture it, support it, and scale it.&rdquo;
More than just a technological upgrade, this initiative represents a broader cultural shift in how education is delivered, how technology is understood, and how teachers are empowered.
As Diandra Emilia put it, &ldquo;The real success won&rsquo;t be measured by the number of workshops we run &mdash; it&rsquo;ll be seen when students, inspired by their teachers, begin to build and dream with tech. That&rsquo;s when we&rsquo;ll know the future is in good hands.&rdquo;
