Scammer Almost Scams RM9,680 Via Short Link Sent By Maxis
Recently Shahirah Shah, a former lawyer now immersed in full-time content creation, shared an encounter on Instagram last Tuesday, February 27. She disclosed receiving a suspicious SMS on February 25.

The message conveyed, "Dear customer, act now! Your 3022 points are expiring soon. Redeem for awesome rewards at our Rewards Center: [Link]. Don't miss out - click now and enjoy the perks!"
Notably, Shahirah pointed out that the short code used to send the message is the standard number employed by Maxis for bill notifications.
When you visit the Malaysian Communications &amp; Multimedia Commission website, you'll discover that various mobile telecommunication companies in Malaysia employ distinct 5-digit short codes as their means of communication with customers.

Upon receiving the SMS, Shahirah, after a casual glance, proceeded to click on the link embedded in the message. Unbeknownst to her, the link led to a phishing site cleverly resembling Maxis' official website.
While navigating this deceptive platform, Shahirah discovered an enticing offer &ndash; the chance to redeem an air fryer for a mere RM1.37. Enticed by what seemed like a great deal, she willingly entered her credit card details and, without much thought, provided the requested one-time password (OTP) received from her bank.
Reflecting on the incident, Shahirah shared, "Typically, OTP messages appear in the notification bar above our phone screen, and we don't usually click into them to read the full message, right? We simply extract the OTP and input it into the website. So, I followed the routine, entering the OTP and encountering an error message from the phishing site."
She continued, "I repeatedly requested new OTPs and attempted the process several times before my suspicions grew."
Upon checking her messaging app for the complete OTP messages, Shahirah was alarmed to find that SGD2,000 (RM7,038) had been deducted from her account. Subsequent OTPs indicated additional deductions of SGD200 and SGD400. It was then that the realization struck &ndash; she had fallen victim to a scam.
Acting swiftly, Shahirah contacted her bank to freeze her account. Fortunately, due to her already reaching her credit limit, the scammers were unsuccessful in extracting any funds from her. Shahirah recounted this harrowing experience.

In a subsequent Instagram video update, Shahirah openly acknowledged that, despite initially finding the phishing site suspicious, she disregarded caution when enticed by the offer of an air fryer. Regrettably, her initial video garnered numerous negative comments. However, she emphasized that her primary intention in posting the video, which has now accumulated over 3 million views, was to serve as a public service announcement. She aimed to prevent others from falling prey to the same scam she had experienced.
Shahirah pointed out the irony of receiving a scam alert from Maxis just days before falling victim to the scam herself. She reflected on how, on this occasion, she mistakenly believed she was clicking on a legitimate Maxis website link.
Is Maxis Aware Of The Scam And Who&rsquo;s Behind It?
Regarding Maxis' official website, the company is currently informed about scammers contacting their customers through their short code. Consequently, they have issued warnings about these fraudulent schemes to all their customers.

Before Shahirah's incident, the hacking group R00TK1T declared on Telegram that they were behind the distribution of phishing SMS to "thousands" of customers directly through Maxis. Numerous users reported receiving the suspicious message from the telco's official short code. Customers utilized social media to alert others about the SMS, revealing a similar scam attempt to that encountered by Shahirah. It included references to point redemption and a questionable hyperlink. Although the hyperlink varied slightly, the message remained identical to previous scams, including the one Shahirah received.

It's crucial to be aware that, even if messages claim to be from official sources, the act of sending links through text messages has been prohibited by authorities since 2023. Therefore, users are strongly advised to exercise caution, ignore such messages, and promptly report such activities if encountered.
As of now, beyond the public service announcement on Maxis' website, there has been no additional response or statement from the telecommunications company. Hence, it is strongly recommended that all users exercise caution when confronted with suspicious links on their phones.
The hope is that greater awareness of this issue will spread among Malaysians, and authorities will promptly address and take action against such scams. Stay vigilant and prioritize cybersecurity in your online interactions.

Dashcam Footage Emerges as Crucial Evidence
Police have confirmed that dashcam footage from a vehicle travelling near the crash site has been handed over and is now central to the investigation. The 38-second clip, which has since gone viral online, shows the bus speeding along the highway, overtaking another vehicle, and then losing control before toppling onto its side and crashing into a guardrail. The footage ends with the bus colliding with the Alza MPV behind.

He confirmed initial observations suggest the bus was travelling at high speed and the front of the vehicle was penetrated by the metal railing upon impact. This would explain why victims seated on the left side of the bus bore the brunt of the collision. &ldquo;Most injuries were to the left shoulder. The bus landed on its left, causing passengers to be thrown sideways,&rdquo; Noor Hisam said.
Survivors Describe Terrifying Moments Before the Crash

Among the survivors was 22-year-old student Nur Irdina Huri, who recounted the chilling moments before the bus overturned. &ldquo;The bus was going downhill fast, swaying dangerously. I wasn&rsquo;t asleep and could smell something burning. Everything happened so fast,&rdquo; she told reporters from her hospital bed.
Nur Irdina, a student of Early Childhood Education, managed to escape through a small gap in the wreckage. She suffered waist injuries and a sprained ankle. &ldquo;It was pitch black and chaotic. I couldn&rsquo;t help my friends &ndash; I couldn&rsquo;t even see them.&rdquo;
Another student who lost her life in the accident was 22-year-old Wan Nur Suhaila Wan Muhammad. Her brother, Wan Muhammad Sham, 31, said she had returned home to celebrate Aidiladha with all nine siblings. &ldquo;She cooked mee celup for the entire family before heading back to campus. None of us expected that to be our final meal together,&rdquo; he said.

In a separate conversation with a UPSI student, she shared that one of her friends had also encountered issues with a bus service. Following news of the UPSI crash, the driver of that bus chose to cancel the trip, reportedly unwilling to take any risks after the tragic incident.
She also mentioned that several passengers on the crashed bus had sensed something was amiss earlier in the journey. However, none of the students dared to raise their concerns with the driver, fearing he might react aggressively if confronted.
Road Conditions and Human Error in Focus

The crash occurred around 1 AM in wet and dark conditions, on a downhill stretch with poor visibility and no road markings. He also noted that the bus narrowly avoided plunging into a ravine on the other side of the guardrail. &ldquo;Most of the victims were found near a ditch beside the railing. Survivors had to crawl out of the wreckage,&rdquo; he added.
Police have yet to conclude whether the cause was due to human error, technical failure, or road conditions. Statements from survivors, forensic analysis, and dashcam footage will all contribute to the final report.

A convoy of hearses carrying 13 of the deceased students left the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh at around 8.55 PM en route to Jertih, Terengganu, where the victims&rsquo; funerals were held. The other two bodies were transported from Gerik Hospital earlier in the evening.
Funeral prayers were conducted at Masjid Hadhari before the students were laid to rest in their respective hometown cemeteries. UPSI also dispatched a contingent of 160 students from Tanjong Malim to Jertih to pay their final respects to their fallen peers.

However, while buyers may choose whether or not to use SPayLater, sellers are automatically enrolled in the programme with no option to opt out. This means they must absorb the associated transaction fee regardless of whether they benefit directly from the instalment feature.
Why Are Sellers Frustrated?

He remarked that many Malaysian graduates are now trapped in low-income jobs despite the country&rsquo;s economic growth, and are increasingly unable to meet basic life milestones such as home or car ownership.
Recalling his own experience, Muhammad said he earned RM1,300 upon entering the job market in 1984. Today, a typical fresh graduate earns between RM2,000 and RM3,000 monthly&mdash;a marginal increase in nominal terms that doesn&rsquo;t reflect the sharp rise in living costs. When adjusted for inflation&mdash;assuming a conservative annual rate of 5%&mdash;today&rsquo;s graduates should be earning closer to RM7,000 to RM8,000 to match the purchasing power of their 1980s counterparts.
&ldquo;In real terms, salaries today are only a third of what they used to be,&rdquo; he said, adding that if current trends continue, today&rsquo;s young people may never enjoy the same quality of life his generation did.
The Rise of the Low-Income Graduate

While these jobs are often shunned by locals, the influx of low-cost labour from countries like Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nepal has created wage suppression for Malaysians in similar roles.
&ldquo;When employers can hire workers cheaply, they have no incentive to raise wages for locals. This affects our citizens directly, particularly those in the B40 segment,&rdquo; Muhammad explained.
A Growing Brain Drain: Nurses, Labourers, and the Search for Better Pay

For example, JobStreet data shows that a nurse in Malaysia earns between RM2,700 and RM3,400 a month, while in Singapore, the salary ranges from RM11,000 to RM13,000. Even Saudi Arabia offers nearly RM7,000 per month.
Beyond white-collar professionals, Muhammad noted an increase in Malaysians crossing into Singapore to perform menial work. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just brain drain&mdash;it&rsquo;s now even low-skilled drain,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If we don&rsquo;t address this soon, Malaysia may one day become a labour-exporting country, with our children working as maids or labourers abroad.&rdquo;
Income Reclassification Misses the Bigger Picture
In response to the government&rsquo;s recent proposal to update income classifications&mdash;changing the B40, M40, and T20 system to B20, M50, and T30 based on consumption data&mdash;Muhammad said the new categorisation risks masking the real challenges of wage stagnation and cost-of-living pressures.
He argued that income-based benchmarks remain critical, as consumption patterns can be misleading, particularly when driven by debt or necessity. &ldquo;If you use the older income definitions, the B40 group probably now encompasses 60% of the population, not just 40%, due to post-COVID economic strain, low savings, and wage stagnation.&rdquo;
GDP Growth Is Not the Only Measure of Progress

Furthermore, O&rsquo;Reilly&rsquo;s claim that Malaysians are &ldquo;barely eating&rdquo; and can&rsquo;t afford Chinese take-out in Kuala Lumpur drew widespread mockery online. In truth, Chinese cuisine is among the most common and affordable foods in Malaysia. Local Chinese restaurants, hawker stalls, and kopitiams offer hearty meals for as little as RM6 to RM20 &mdash; easily within the reach of most working and middle-class residents.
