<p>Recently Shahirah Shah, a former lawyer now immersed in full-time content creation, shared an encounter on Instagram last Tuesday, February 27. She disclosed receiving a suspicious SMS on February 25.</p>

<p>Notably, Shahirah pointed out that the short code used to send the message is the standard number employed by Maxis for bill notifications.</p>
<p>When you visit the Malaysian Communications &amp; Multimedia Commission website, you'll discover that various mobile telecommunication companies in Malaysia employ distinct 5-digit short codes as their means of communication with customers.</p>

<p>Upon receiving the SMS, Shahirah, after a casual glance, proceeded to click on the link embedded in the message. Unbeknownst to her, the link led to a phishing site cleverly resembling Maxis' official website.</p>
<p>While navigating this deceptive platform, Shahirah discovered an enticing offer &ndash; the chance to redeem an air fryer for a mere RM1.37. Enticed by what seemed like a great deal, she willingly entered her credit card details and, without much thought, provided the requested one-time password (OTP) received from her bank.</p>
<p>Reflecting on the incident, Shahirah shared, "Typically, OTP messages appear in the notification bar above our phone screen, and we don't usually click into them to read the full message, right? We simply extract the OTP and input it into the website. So, I followed the routine, entering the OTP and encountering an error message from the phishing site."</p>
<p>She continued, "I repeatedly requested new OTPs and attempted the process several times before my suspicions grew."</p>
<p>Upon checking her messaging app for the complete OTP messages, Shahirah was alarmed to find that SGD2,000 (RM7,038) had been deducted from her account. Subsequent OTPs indicated additional deductions of SGD200 and SGD400. It was then that the realization struck &ndash; she had fallen victim to a scam.</p>
<p>Acting swiftly, Shahirah contacted her bank to freeze her account. Fortunately, due to her already reaching her credit limit, the scammers were unsuccessful in extracting any funds from her. Shahirah recounted this harrowing experience.</p>

<p>In a subsequent Instagram video update, Shahirah openly acknowledged that, despite initially finding the phishing site suspicious, she disregarded caution when enticed by the offer of an air fryer. Regrettably, her initial video garnered numerous negative comments. However, she emphasized that her primary intention in posting the video, which has now accumulated over 3 million views, was to serve as a public service announcement. She aimed to prevent others from falling prey to the same scam she had experienced.</p>
<p>Shahirah pointed out the irony of receiving a scam alert from Maxis just days before falling victim to the scam herself. She reflected on how, on this occasion, she mistakenly believed she was clicking on a legitimate Maxis website link.</p>
<p><strong>Is Maxis Aware Of The Scam And Who&rsquo;s Behind It?</strong></p>
<p>Regarding Maxis' official website, the company is currently informed about scammers contacting their customers through their short code. Consequently, they have issued warnings about these fraudulent schemes to all their customers.</p>

<p>Before Shahirah's incident, the hacking group R00TK1T declared on Telegram that they were behind the distribution of phishing SMS to "thousands" of customers directly through Maxis. Numerous users reported receiving the suspicious message from the telco's official short code. Customers utilized social media to alert others about the SMS, revealing a similar scam attempt to that encountered by Shahirah. It included references to point redemption and a questionable hyperlink. Although the hyperlink varied slightly, the message remained identical to previous scams, including the one Shahirah received.</p>

The Aerotrain, which links the Main Terminal with the Satellite Building, resumed operations on 1 July after a RM456 million upgrade. MAHB assured that technical teams were working to resolve the issue and are monitoring the system closely during this early phase of operations. Shuttle buses were deployed to maintain connectivity between terminals.</p>
<p>MAHB has also committed to improving the tunnel&rsquo;s drainage systems to prevent similar incidents in future weather events.</p>

MAHB confirmed that the new trains had undergone six months of testing under the supervision of the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) before the relaunch.</p>

<p>A viewing was arranged for 18 June at Parc 3, Cheras, where Fazeem met a man who presented himself confidently as the unit&rsquo;s rightful owner. &ldquo;He gave me his IC, showed me a past tenancy agreement, and really played the part,&rdquo; Fazeem explained, adding that the man was so convincing that he didn&rsquo;t feel the need to question anything at the time.</p>

Phone calls went straight to voicemail, WhatsApp showed the number as &ldquo;not registered&rdquo;, and the individual had deleted his account. &ldquo;He vanished just like that,&rdquo; Fazeem wrote, frustrated. &ldquo;I only wanted to help my sister and her friends find a place before their lease ends on 5 July. These scammers are too slick nowadays &mdash; always verify everything before handing over money.&rdquo;</p>

<p>A ferry travelling from Ketapang Port in East Java to Gilimanuk Port in Bali sank late on Wednesday night (2 July 2025), just 25 minutes into its journey across the Bali Strait, one of Indonesia&rsquo;s busiest inter-island routes. The ferry, named KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, was carrying 65 people on board&mdash;53 passengers and 12 crew members&mdash;along with 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks.</p>
<p>The ferry capsized at approximately 11:20pm, and by 12:22am, it was found overturned and drifting. Initial reports point to a combination of engine trouble and rough weather conditions, with waves reaching up to two metres (6.5 feet), contributing to the tragic incident.</p>
