We are delighted to announce the successful conclusion of Phase 2 of the Good Virtues Co. #DoGoodChallenge Season 2! Over the past few months, we have had the privilege of partnering with Good Virtues Co. and engaging with UiTM students, providing them with an exclusive platform to showcase their innovative Do Good ideas, all while vying for the substantial cash prize of RM85,000.
Following the triumphant conclusion of Season 1, Season 2 made a triumphant return, embarking on a journey across UiTM campuses nationwide, with Sabah and Sarawak joining the fold this season. Witnessing the incredible creativity and passion of students, we received over 10,000 entries spanning across 27 campuses.
From the multitude of entries, we had the privilege of selecting 51 exceptional students (20 teams) to join us and Good Virtues Co. for the Phase 2 workshop. During this workshop, students had the invaluable opportunity to network with teams from across Malaysia while refining and developing their project ideas.

Malaysia is poised to redefine the future of urban living through Kota Madani, an upcoming RM4 billion development in Putrajaya&rsquo;s Precinct 19. Touted as a national benchmark in urban planning, the township promises a revolutionary concept &mdash; a completely car-free environment at ground level, supported by artificial intelligence (AI), green infrastructure, and integrated public services.
The project, covering 102.5 acres (41.28 hectares), is being spearheaded by Putrajaya Holdings and will be developed under a Build&ndash;Lease&ndash;Maintain&ndash;Transfer (BLMT) model. Upon completion, Kota Madani is expected to house over 30,000 residents, primarily civil servants, and offer an unparalleled quality of life in Malaysia&rsquo;s administrative capital.
No Cars Above Ground: Reimagining Urban Mobility

In a bold departure from conventional urban design, all vehicle access in Kota Madani will be confined to a massive underground system. According to Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) president, Datin Mazrina Abdul Khalid, cars and motorcycles will be routed directly into a three-storey underground car park upon entering the township.
&ldquo;The surface podium level from the fifth floor upwards will be entirely pedestrianised,&rdquo; Mazrina said. &ldquo;This allows residents to safely and comfortably move between homes, schools, shops, parks, and mosques without encountering a single car.&rdquo;
This car-free concept is designed to encourage walking, reduce noise pollution, and eliminate the need for road crossings, while also contributing to a healthier and more community-oriented lifestyle.

In an effort to address concerns about cost and financial transparency, Minister in the Prime Minister&rsquo;s Department (Federal Territories), Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, confirmed that the entire RM4 billion cost will be borne by the developer. Under the BLMT model, the private developer will fund, build, and maintain the township for 25 years before transferring ownership to the government.
&ldquo;There will be no taxpayer money used,&rdquo; Dr Zaliha stated, addressing criticisms about national spending priorities.
This financial structure is seen as a way to deliver large-scale innovation without placing further burden on the public purse, while ensuring long-term value for the government.
Public Concerns: Practicality and Priorities
Despite the project&rsquo;s futuristic appeal, public reaction has been mixed. &ldquo;The learned trial judge did not fairly evaluate the defence and wrongly treated it as a mere denial,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;There was no element of dishonesty when Syed Saddiq instructed his staff to withdraw party funds, as he was legally entitled to do so at the time.&rdquo;
The court ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the core elements of the offences, particularly the intent required for criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation, and money laundering. According to the judgment, the failure to properly direct the trial and the misinterpretation of legal standards warranted full appellate intervention.
The Charges and What They Meant
Syed Saddiq, 32, had been convicted in 2023 on four charges:

The money laundering convictions would have added an additional two years, running concurrently. Syed Saddiq&rsquo;s sentence also included two strokes of the rotan and a RM10 million fine. The sentence had been stayed pending the appeal.

The court has since ordered that his passport and bail money be returned. The Attorney General&rsquo;s Chambers has not yet confirmed whether it will seek to appeal the decision to the Federal Court.

The Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally, held on 21 June at Lintasan Deasoka, Kota Kinabalu, was organised by UMS student group Suara Mahasiswa. The protest, which reportedly attracted around 100 participants, lasted for 22 hours and aimed to draw attention to alleged corruption in Sabah, along with ongoing issues affecting students, including a water supply crisis on the UMS campus.
However, the act that made headlines was when two students set fire to a large placard bearing Anwar&rsquo;s caricature and the words: &ldquo;MADANI: Protector of Sabah corruption.&rdquo; The imagery and bold message sparked both condemnation and debate.
One of the organisers, final-year student Fadhil Kasim, later took responsibility for the act on social media, defending it as a symbolic gesture rooted in historical student activism.
Activism Echoes Anwar&rsquo;s Reformist Roots

In his statement, Fadhil invoked the legacy of Anwar Ibrahim himself &mdash; who, as a student leader in the 1970s, led similar acts of protest. He pointed to Anwar&rsquo;s involvement in burning a copy of 13 Mei, a book by Malaysia&rsquo;s first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, during a student demonstration over perceived injustices.
&ldquo;We were inspired by Anwar&rsquo;s own activism. Just as he once burned a book he believed undermined the truth, we burned his caricature to highlight betrayal and hypocrisy,&rdquo; Fadhil wrote. &ldquo;I&rsquo;d like to think Anwar, upon seeing the video, would be reminded of who he once was.&rdquo;
He also added that the outrage from Anwar's loyalists &mdash; including youth groups such as ABIM and AMK &mdash; missed the point, as they were more concerned with optics and reverence than the actual issues being raised.
UMS: Burning Was &lsquo;Immature and Uncivilised&rsquo;

UMS, however, has firmly condemned the act. Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor described the incident as &ldquo;uncivilised, immature, and unreflective of the intellectual standards expected of university students.&rdquo;
He confirmed that 13 students had been identified as participants in the protest, and two were directly involved in burning the caricature. The university indicated that disciplinary proceedings were being considered under the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU). A committee of academics would be established to review the matter and determine appropriate action, including possible suspension or expulsion.
Despite the criticism, the protest&rsquo;s central message appears to have struck a chord with many Malaysians disillusioned by the slow pace of anti-corruption efforts, particularly in East Malaysia.
Police Investigation Underway

Separately, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun confirmed that the protest is under investigation for alleged breaches of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, which regulates public demonstrations. He said organisers may have failed to comply with certain procedural requirements.
Reports later surfaced that two student activists were detained in connection with the protest. This further intensified public scrutiny, with some quarters warning that criminalising student dissent could erode public trust in democratic institutions.
Anwar&rsquo;s Balancing Act: Statesman vs. Activist

&ldquo;The burning of my caricature reminds us of how deeply the rakyat yearns for corruption to be rooted out,&rdquo; Anwar was quoted as saying. &ldquo;As someone who came from the student reform movement, I understand that even sharp criticism is a vital part of democracy.&rdquo;
His call to protect the students&rsquo; academic futures was met with cautious praise from some civil society groups, though others noted that true reform would also mean ensuring institutions like UMS do not retaliate through backdoor disciplinary action.
While the fallout from the protest continues to unfold, the Prime Minister&rsquo;s move to shield students from academic punishment marks a significant gesture &mdash; one that could set the tone for how future expressions of youth activism are received in Malaysia.
The test now lies in whether institutions like UMS and the police will align with the spirit of Anwar&rsquo;s directive, or whether this moment will become yet another example of rhetoric failing to translate into systemic change.
