Isman Ibrahim, a 41-year-old employee of MBSA, recounted a harrowing experience at a private hospital in 2019 when what was meant to be treatment for appendicitis turned into a nightmare. Alleged negligence by the surgeon led to gangrene developing in both of Isman's legs.
For those unfamiliar, gangrene is a medical condition characterized by tissue death and decay due to either reduced blood flow or bacterial infection. Symptoms often include discoloured, malodorous tissue that may swell, become painful, and ultimately necrotic.
According to reports, what was supposed to be a routine procedure took a disastrous turn when the operating doctor negligently pierced and tied Isman's main blood vessels, resulting in severe damage to both legs.
Following the incident, Isman was transferred to another private hospital for further evaluation. Unfortunately, the damage was so extensive that both legs required amputation to save his life. Despite efforts to salvage his limbs, the irreparable damage necessitated a double leg amputation up to the thigh level.
Sight Of A Changed Self Could Worsen Heartache

Throughout his ordeal, Isman faced additional challenges as his wife was pregnant with their fourth child. He also had to shield his condition from his other three children, fearing their distress upon seeing him in such a state.
&ldquo;For 10 days, I had to hide my fate from our other three children before those present later also cried seeing their father&rsquo;s new condition,&rdquo; he said.
After undergoing the amputation of his legs, Isman was later compelled to undergo vascular bypass surgery. Since the procedure, he has been plagued by intense nerve pain.
&ldquo;I have not had a good night&rsquo;s sleep since five years ago. Every second day starting at 2am, I experience pain and certain parts of my body are disturbed and I have to rely entirely on medication,&rdquo; he said.
Hospital Receives RM55 Million Lawsuit For Their Negligence

Isman came across evidence of medical negligence when he unearthed a recorded conversation with one of the anaesthesiologists involved in the surgery. The conversation strongly suggested negligence in puncturing a blood vessel. This revelation only strengthened Isman's determination to seek justice and hold the hospital accountable for its actions.
Supported by his legal team, Isman resolved to take legal action against the hospital in his pursuit of justice.
&ldquo;I am determined to bring this case to court to expose the negligence of the hospital. I&rsquo;m sure there are many cases being silenced, and I hope those in similar situations will come forward,&rdquo; he said.
His lawyer, Firhat Muhd Fikri Isman, stated that although they initially filed a lawsuit seeking RM55 million, they intend to refile the lawsuit to secure Isman's well-being and enable him to lead a normal life. The refiling process is expected to be completed within a month.
In Malaysia, incidents of medical negligence have unfortunately caused additional pain and suffering for patients instead of providing relief. While securing RM55 million through the courts for Isman may be challenging, negotiations between the hospital and his lawyer are likely to take place.

Beyond white-collar professionals, Muhammad noted an increase in Malaysians crossing into Singapore to perform menial work. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just brain drain&mdash;it&rsquo;s now even low-skilled drain,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If we don&rsquo;t address this soon, Malaysia may one day become a labour-exporting country, with our children working as maids or labourers abroad.&rdquo;
Income Reclassification Misses the Bigger Picture
In response to the government&rsquo;s recent proposal to update income classifications&mdash;changing the B40, M40, and T20 system to B20, M50, and T30 based on consumption data&mdash;Muhammad said the new categorisation risks masking the real challenges of wage stagnation and cost-of-living pressures.
He argued that income-based benchmarks remain critical, as consumption patterns can be misleading, particularly when driven by debt or necessity. &ldquo;If you use the older income definitions, the B40 group probably now encompasses 60% of the population, not just 40%, due to post-COVID economic strain, low savings, and wage stagnation.&rdquo;
GDP Growth Is Not the Only Measure of Progress

Despite the grim outlook, Muhammad said Malaysia still has time to reverse course. He pointed to the remarkable growth trajectories of East Asian economies that once had lower per capita incomes than Malaysia but have since surged ahead through long-term reform in education, technology, and governance.
&ldquo;We cannot continue benchmarking ourselves against regional peers who are also struggling. We must aim higher,&rdquo; he said.
He concluded with a warning: &ldquo;Without a bold and decisive push for structural change, we risk raising a generation that is poorer than the last, unable to afford homes, education, or healthcare, and forced to look overseas for dignity and opportunity.&rdquo;

The allegations include being struck by a thrown object while resting and having his motorcycle physically lifted and locked in a cage by a group of peers. The video includes short footage of the victim lying down and reacting as a white item is hurled at him.
&ldquo;I was shocked to find out what he&rsquo;d been through,&rdquo; said Masdo in the clip. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s beyond unacceptable. When the person being bullied is someone with disabilities, I consider the bullies absolute cowards.&rdquo;
He further called for immediate institutional action and warned that if GiatMARA failed to act, he would escalate the matter himself.
MARA Chairman Promises Stern Action

&ldquo;Preliminary information suggests the incident may have stemmed from a case of rough joking among trainees during their earlier training sessions at GiatMARA Alor Gajah,&rdquo; he said in a Facebook post. &ldquo;However, MARA takes all allegations of bullying seriously, regardless of intent. There will be no compromise.&rdquo;
The trainees involved are reportedly now undertaking industrial training in welding technology and metal fabrication.

The chairman further outlined that this policy applies to all of MARA&rsquo;s educational and training institutions, including but not limited to the Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM), GiatMARA centres, MARA Skills Institutes, MARA Colleges, Professional Colleges (KPM), Higher Skills Colleges (KKTM), MARA Poly-Tech Colleges (KPTM), as well as higher education institutions like the MARA Japan Industrial Institute (MJII), German-Malaysian Institute (GMI), Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM), and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL).
