Recall the momentous win of Anwar Ibrahim during the 15th General Elections (GE15) on November 19, 2022?
At the outset of the Madani Government led by Anwar Ibrahim, there was widespread optimism that he and his party would steer Malaysia toward a path of economic revitalization, reminiscent of its former glory. A survey conducted by Ipsos at that time reflected strong confidence in his leadership among many Malaysians. However, fast forward to 2024, and that confidence has dwindled significantly, dropping by nearly a third from the levels seen in 2023.

In the latest "What Worries Malaysians" poll by the market research firm, released yesterday, the findings revealed a significant shift in sentiment. In March, only 53 per cent of respondents expressed agreement with the country's direction, a notable decline from the 74 per cent reported in January 2023.
Conversely, the number of dissenting voices has risen sharply, with 47 per cent indicating disagreement, up from a mere 26 per cent at the beginning of 2023. Among the primary concerns cited by this group were apprehensions about corruption and the introduction of new taxes.
According to Ipsos Malaysia managing director Arun Menon and Ipsos Public Affairs Research Manager Atticus Poon, many Malaysians believe that the country is now heading on the wrong track and is on the rise soon. Additionally, many more Malaysians are now likely to be pessimistic than optimistic about the country&rsquo;s direction.
When looking at the chart, the contrast to January 2023 shows that three-quarters of the surveyed population stated they believed the country was initially on the right track but it later began to decrease in 2023 after an initial high in January 2023 following the 14th General elections (GE14) that happened in 2018.
Corruption And Taxes Become Part Of The Concern Among Malaysians

In the post-pandemic era, Malaysians have consistently identified financial and political corruption, alongside inflation, as their primary concerns. However, taxes have recently emerged as one of the top five worries, experiencing a significant 12 per cent increase since March 2023.
In the latest survey, half of the Malaysian respondents expressed concern about financial and political corruption, while 38 per cent cited inflation as worrisome. Following closely were unemployment, poverty, social inequality, and taxes.
Recent tax hikes, notably the increase in the service tax from 6% to 8% in March, have heightened concerns among Malaysians. While some items, like mobile services, were exempt from the 8% tax, the overall increase in prices of everyday goods has sparked worry among the populace.
Malaysian concerns reflect the global average, with less emphasis locally on crime and violence.
"While primary concerns align with global trends, over half of Malaysians specifically cite financial and political corruption as their foremost worry," remarked the Ipsos executives.
Loss In Consumer Confidence

The apprehension regarding taxes has also been steadily increasing, especially in comparison to the previous year. Quarterly consumer confidence has declined from 54 per cent to 49 per cent over the past year, with a notable drop in the fourth quarter of 2023.
On the contrary, the global average has remained steady, fluctuating within the range of 48 to 49 percent. Despite consumer confidence stabilizing in the initial months of the year, it experienced a 4.2 per cent decline month-on-month in March.
The diminishing optimism is evident in consumer confidence, mirroring a trend observed in Q1&rsquo;23. As the initial optimism of the New Year wanes, more Malaysians are growing increasingly worried about their financial circumstances and are exhibiting heightened reluctance towards spending as remarked by Menon and Poon.

Despite the Madani government's efforts to close loopholes and ensure good governance and integrity, some weaknesses persist, leading to criticism that the prime minister is more talk than action.
The economic situation also faces scrutiny due to stern actions against prominent figures and the cancellation of direct negotiation contracts, decisions Anwar insists are necessary for the country's well-being.
The lingering question now is the government's longevity. Will it endure until the 16th General Elections in 2027 or 2028? Only time will tell, and we hope for improvements in the months ahead.
