However, it appears that the government is facing additional challenges, notably the longstanding issue of Malaysia's minimum wage.
Workers To March For Higher Minimum Wage on May Day

In a push for the government to raise the minimum wage to RM2,000, a coalition of 12 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), political parties, and civil movements, including Persatuan Sahabat Malaysia, Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram), Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), and the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), have come together. They have organized a May Day march on Labour Day, which falls on the 1st of May (Wednesday).
This year's march, themed 'Living Wage,' will commence at 10 am from Dataran Maybank in Bangsar to Dataran Merdeka. It's worth noting that the march has been held annually since 1994 to advocate for workers' rights, improved working conditions, and liveable wages.
Requesting A Minimum Of RM2,000 
According to Azura Nasron, the project manager at Suara Rakyat Malaysia, 35% of formal sector workers earn less than RM2,000 per month. Additionally, she notes that a significant portion of individuals aged 45-49 are currently earning less than RM3,500.
&ldquo;Even if you follow the government model for determining wages, that is accounting for inflation, housing and food, and so on, the minimum wage should be RM2,400,&rdquo; said PSM leader S. Arutchelvan.
They further emphasized their proposal, suggesting a compromise that falls midway between the anticipated minimum wage and RM2,000.

The existing minimum wage stands at RM1,500, a figure unions argue falls significantly short of what experts deem adequate. According to a 2022 report by Bank Negara Malaysia on the cost of living, workers in the Klang Valley require at least RM2,200 to cover essential goods and services.
&ldquo;Everything is going up but wages are not. Recently, the issue of wages has been taken very seriously&hellip; However, until now, we have not yet been invited by the minimum wage coordination committee to discuss the upcoming minimum wage. We are very disappointed,&rdquo; said May 1 Secretariat spokeswoman Parameiswary Elumalai.
The most recent hike in the minimum wage occurred in 2022 when then-Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced an increase of RM300. This adjustment was the most substantial at the time, but it's worth noting that the policy wasn't compulsory for all industries.

According to the Brickfields District Police, the incident began around 11pm on 1 July when a black Honda City, driven by a 28-year-old man, was struck on its right-side mirror by a red Toyota Yaris near Jalan Desa. What began as a routine fender-bender turned heated as the drivers exited their vehicles and confronted one another.
The situation took a dangerous turn when the driver of the Toyota Yaris suddenly pulled out what appeared to be a black pistol and pointed it directly at the complainant. The weapon was allegedly used to threaten the victim during the argument, creating a highly distressing scene.
Fearing for his safety, the Honda driver lodged a police report at 12.55am the following morning. Police officers responded swiftly to the report and managed to apprehend two suspects, aged 19 and 27, later that day.
Weapon Found to Be Replica Purchased on TikTok

Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood confirmed the detail in a statement, noting that the weapon was &ldquo;an imitation, not capable of discharging live ammunition, but still capable of causing fear and alarm among the public.&rdquo;
He further revealed that one of the suspects may have been under the influence of alcohol during the incident, although this aspect of the investigation is ongoing.
Four-Day Remand Granted

Additionally, the suspects are also being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960 for possession of an imitation firearm, which carries similar penalties upon conviction.

The case gained public attention after a video of the incident began circulating on social media, showing one of the suspects pointing the weapon during the verbal altercation. A ferry travelling from Ketapang Port in East Java to Gilimanuk Port in Bali sank late on Wednesday night (2 July 2025), just 25 minutes into its journey across the Bali Strait, one of Indonesia&rsquo;s busiest inter-island routes. In a forward-looking initiative, teachers across the state are receiving specialised AI training, enabling them to introduce this transformative technology into their classrooms &mdash; not just as a tool, but as a teaching philosophy grounded in ethics, innovation, and impact.
This initiative is driven by a desire to ensure that education in Sarawak does not lag behind global technological trends, while also responding directly to the needs and aspirations of teachers on the ground.
The Moral Compass of Technology

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the training programme in response to a heartfelt request from teachers, conveyed by Deputy Minister Datuk Abdullah Saidol. During the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025, the Premier stressed that while AI can be a powerful enabler, its use must be tempered with moral responsibility and critical thinking.
&ldquo;We have to tell our students that AI is just a machine,&rdquo; Abang Johari said. &ldquo;A machine without feeling, without emotion. But we are human &mdash; and it is we who must decide how the technology is used.&rdquo;
Using the analogy of a kitchen knife, he explained that while tools can serve many beneficial purposes, they can also cause harm if misused. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s why education is key. AI must be used to improve lives, not to damage them. Our role is to guide that process.&rdquo;
He further highlighted AI&rsquo;s growing role in Sarawak&rsquo;s economy, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, and the social sector, making it imperative that educators are equipped to keep up with changing demands across all industries.
Hands-On Innovation: A Glimpse into the Training Programme

While details of the full-scale rollout are still in development, a recent pilot initiative at Curtin University Malaysia has already demonstrated the impact such training can have. Over four days, more than 80 primary and secondary school teachers participated in a collaborative, high-energy workshop led by the IEEE Curtin University Malaysia Student Branch and Chumbaka Miri, a local nonprofit focused on tech education.
This &ldquo;Train-the-Trainer&rdquo; programme offered a dual-track approach:

<li>Primary school teachers took part in the Junior Innovate (JI) stream, which introduced digital-making platforms like Scratch and Arduino. Through these tools, they developed interactive, game-based projects focused on real-world themes, such as promoting school safety, encouraging inclusivity, and supporting mental well-being &mdash; all aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).</li>
<li>One teacher shared that using games like &ldquo;Werewolf&rdquo; helped illustrate logic flow and decision-making in a way that was accessible and engaging for young learners. &ldquo;It wasn&rsquo;t just about the coding &mdash; it was about storytelling, ethics, and problem-solving,&rdquo; they said.</li>

Meanwhile, secondary school teachers joined the Young Inventors Challenge (YIC), which delved deeper into AI integration through PictoBlox, a visual programming platform, and AI-integrated Arduino hardware. Teachers were mentored by IEEE student volunteers, who helped them explore how AI could be used to solve community challenges.
One standout project was a visual aid device for the visually impaired, developed by a team of teachers with no prior coding experience. Using image recognition and motion sensors, they prototyped a tool that could guide visually impaired students through school corridors &mdash; a powerful reminder of how innovation can arise when empathy and technology intersect.
Empowering Educators, Empowering Students

For many participants, the experience was transformative. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re not just teaching tech &mdash; we&rsquo;re shaping changemakers,&rdquo; said IEEE Community Outreach co-head Diandra Emilia. &ldquo;The atmosphere was buzzing with creativity, curiosity and a real sense of mission.&rdquo;
According to IEEE advisor Professor Garenth Lim, the training reflects a shift in Malaysia&rsquo;s education landscape. &ldquo;When we invest in teachers, we don&rsquo;t just build skills. We spark a ripple effect &mdash; one that can influence an entire generation to see innovation not as something abstract, but as a tool for solving real problems.&rdquo;
Chumbaka, known for its storytelling-based approach to digital education, sees this model as one that could be scaled across Malaysia. The organisation emphasises inclusivity &mdash; ensuring that schools even in smaller towns like Miri are not left behind as AI and digital literacy become global imperatives.
Looking Ahead: From Pilot to Policy
The Sarawak government now appears committed to expanding this initiative statewide, with strong indications that similar programmes will reach rural and interior schools in the near future. Premier Abang Johari has reiterated his belief that AI should be woven into every sector &mdash; and that education is where this transformation must begin.
Deputy Minister Abdullah also highlighted the importance of collaboration between ministries, universities, and civil society in building a tech-literate population. &ldquo;The interest is already there among our teachers. Our job is to nurture it, support it, and scale it.&rdquo;
More than just a technological upgrade, this initiative represents a broader cultural shift in how education is delivered, how technology is understood, and how teachers are empowered.
As Diandra Emilia put it, &ldquo;The real success won&rsquo;t be measured by the number of workshops we run &mdash; it&rsquo;ll be seen when students, inspired by their teachers, begin to build and dream with tech. That&rsquo;s when we&rsquo;ll know the future is in good hands.&rdquo;

In a world where gig work is often viewed as an unstable or transitional phase, Afiq Zayany is defying the odds &mdash; and expectations. While many associate food delivery with long hours, low pay, and limited future prospects, Afiq has turned it into a high-earning profession that funds his dream lifestyle in a luxury villa.
What makes his story stand out isn&rsquo;t just the numbers &mdash; it&rsquo;s the cross-border discipline, sheer work ethic, and personal philosophy that drive his success.
From Johor Bahru to Singapore: The Daily Commute Behind the Earnings

Afiq resides in Johor Bahru (JB), Malaysia, where he owns a sprawling two-storey landed golf villa valued at RM1.4 million. The home features a large compound, three-car garage, and a view that rivals that of most high-end resorts. But to fund this lifestyle, Afiq crosses the Malaysia-Singapore border every single day to work as a Grab delivery rider in the city-state.

His daily routine is disciplined: he starts early, rides through busy Singaporean streets, and delivers food orders for six to seven hours, clocking in around 25 deliveries on average. This translates to roughly S$200 (RM660) in daily earnings &mdash; and at that pace, Afiq&rsquo;s monthly income ranges between S$6,000 to S$7,000 (RM20,000+).
In his own words: &ldquo;If you treat this like a real job, not a side hustle, S$4,000 is the minimum. Push harder, and you can hit S$6,000 or more.&rdquo;
The Work Behind the Wages: No Glamour, Just Grit

While the income sounds impressive, Afiq is the first to admit the job is far from glamorous. He estimates riding over 250 kilometres a day, exposed to Singapore&rsquo;s unpredictable weather. Some days, it&rsquo;s punishing heat; on others, sudden downpours soak riders mid-route. Beyond that, riders must stay constantly alert &mdash; navigating traffic, avoiding accidents, and meeting tight delivery timelines.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s either scorching hot or you get drenched,&rdquo; he explains. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s exhausting, and you&rsquo;re risking your life on the road every single day.&rdquo;
His typical day may not involve office meetings or air-conditioned cubicles, but it demands more stamina and situational awareness than many white-collar jobs.
Despite the hardships, Afiq says mental discipline is the key. &ldquo;You are your own boss, but people forget that being a boss is hard. There&rsquo;s no one chasing you to work &mdash; so you have to be consistent and motivated.&rdquo;
Acts of Kindness and the Human Side of the Job

Amid the hustle, Afiq has experienced moments that restore his faith in humanity. Some customers leave out cold drinks or snacks for riders &mdash; a small but meaningful gesture that brightens an otherwise draining day.
&ldquo;Most customers are thoughtful. When I see snacks left outside for riders, it genuinely makes my day,&rdquo; he says.
These gestures remind him that he&rsquo;s not invisible, and that many people appreciate the hard work behind each meal delivery.
Discipline, Not a Shortcut: How Afiq Built His Routine

Afiq has been a Grab rider for over two to three years, and he is quick to shut down any myths about easy money. While his earnings are impressive, he stresses that they are the result of clear goals, daily routines, and a willingness to endure discomfort.
He keeps detailed records, sets weekly targets (like hitting 180 orders), and takes advantage of platform incentives. On one particular week in May, he earned S$1,283 before incentives, and an additional S$150 bonus for reaching his delivery goal.
But it&rsquo;s not all sunshine and windfalls. &ldquo;If I take a week off, my income drops to around S$4,000,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;But if I work every day &mdash; seven days a week for the whole month &mdash; I can get close to S$7,000.&rdquo;

A New Life in Johor Bahru: Peace, Space, and Perspective

Beyond the earnings, Afiq says his decision to live in Johor Bahru has made him happier overall. Compared to Singapore&rsquo;s dense, fast-paced lifestyle, JB offers him space, peace of mind, and a more relaxed pace of life &mdash; without compromising his income.
&ldquo;I feel less stressed, less cramped, and more at peace,&rdquo; he shared. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s the best of both worlds &mdash; I earn in Singapore, but I live in comfort in Malaysia.&rdquo;
No Career Ladder, But a Path to Freedom
While Afiq is proud of his achievements, he is realistic about the nature of platform work. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s no promotion, no HR department planning your career,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s not for everyone. You have to make it work for you.&rdquo;
He praises Grab for offering workshops and training to equip riders with skills, but maintains that success ultimately depends on personal discipline. &ldquo;The flexibility is great &mdash; but don&rsquo;t misuse it. Set goals. Stick to them. Show up every day.&rdquo;
And that, according to Afiq, is how a rider becomes not just self-sufficient, but successful.
Redefining Gig Work: Not a Shortcut, but a Strategy
