Interestingly, recent findings suggest that an increasing number of Malaysians are placing less emphasis on salary when considering a job change. However, amidst concerns about the sustainability of the current economy, there are still those who prioritize seeking higher-paying opportunities.

However, it appears that the government is facing additional challenges, notably the longstanding issue of Malaysia's minimum wage.
Workers To March For Higher Minimum Wage on May Day

In a push for the government to raise the minimum wage to RM2,000, a coalition of 12 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), political parties, and civil movements, including Persatuan Sahabat Malaysia, Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram), Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), and the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), have come together. They have organized a May Day march on Labour Day, which falls on the 1st of May (Wednesday).
This year's march, themed 'Living Wage,' will commence at 10 am from Dataran Maybank in Bangsar to Dataran Merdeka. It's worth noting that the march has been held annually since 1994 to advocate for workers' rights, improved working conditions, and liveable wages.
Requesting A Minimum Of RM2,000 
According to Azura Nasron, the project manager at Suara Rakyat Malaysia, 35% of formal sector workers earn less than RM2,000 per month. Additionally, she notes that a significant portion of individuals aged 45-49 are currently earning less than RM3,500.
&ldquo;Even if you follow the government model for determining wages, that is accounting for inflation, housing and food, and so on, the minimum wage should be RM2,400,&rdquo; said PSM leader S. Arutchelvan.
They further emphasized their proposal, suggesting a compromise that falls midway between the anticipated minimum wage and RM2,000.

The existing minimum wage stands at RM1,500, a figure unions argue falls significantly short of what experts deem adequate. According to a 2022 report by Bank Negara Malaysia on the cost of living, workers in the Klang Valley require at least RM2,200 to cover essential goods and services.
&ldquo;Everything is going up but wages are not. Recently, the issue of wages has been taken very seriously&hellip; However, until now, we have not yet been invited by the minimum wage coordination committee to discuss the upcoming minimum wage. We are very disappointed,&rdquo; said May 1 Secretariat spokeswoman Parameiswary Elumalai.
The most recent hike in the minimum wage occurred in 2022 when then-Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced an increase of RM300. This adjustment was the most substantial at the time, but it's worth noting that the policy wasn't compulsory for all industries.
A Review Of Minimum Wake For Graduates

In March, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Kong announced that the government would be reviewing the minimum wage for 2024. This comprehensive review process will consider input from both employers and employees, and it will be guided by the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011 and socio-economic reports provided by Bank Negara Malaysia.

Upon returning to Malaysia, they benefit from increased purchasing power due to the favourable exchange rates.

In today&rsquo;s social media-driven world, it&rsquo;s no secret that Malaysians often hold diverse opinions on various issues. When something goes viral, the reactions tend to fall into one of two extremes: heartwarming community support or an unwarranted wave of boycott and cancel culture.
Recently, a Muslim eatery in Johor found itself at the centre of this phenomenon. What began as a boycott threat surprisingly transformed into an outpouring of support for the restaurant.
How Did It All Started?
Recently, TikTok user @salaistar shared a video of a restaurant owner expressing her heartbreak over hateful messages from individuals criticizing her for feeding stray animals, particularly dogs. Despite the negativity, she remains determined and unwavering in her commitment to caring for these creatures.

&ldquo;Some people have messaged me to criticise me for feeding these animals. They are Allah&rsquo;s creations, and as an animal lover, I can&rsquo;t turn away and not feed them,&rdquo; she said.
The restaurant owner passionately believes in equal welfare for all animals. She revealed that filming her interactions with strays is simply a personal hobby and not an attempt to seek recognition for her kindness. In addition to running her restaurant, Salai Star, she also owns a pet product shop, which has strengthened her bond with animals. Her dedication extends to spending her hard-earned money to nurse injured animals back to health.
Despite her good intentions, the video she shared sparked backlash, with many threatening to boycott her restaurant. The criticism deeply hurt her, but she remains committed to her practices. Instead of discarding leftover food, she chooses to feed strays, a meaningful act that not only reduces waste but also provides much-needed help to animals in need.
Community Rallying Behind Her Kindness
Following the viral backlash, a wave of online support rallied behind the restaurant owner, with many netizens praising her kindness. Recently, a Facebook user shared his experience on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/eat.whereveruare/posts/8984891564963564/">page 吃的平台</a> after visiting the restaurant.&nbsp;
What he didn&rsquo;t expect was the heartwarming atmosphere he encountered, as the restaurant was filled with customers showing their support for the owner. The most surprising part? Nearly 99% of the customers were Chinese.

The owner&rsquo;s husband shared that around 11:30am, customers started flocking to the restaurant, and the crowd kept growing throughout the day&mdash;something he had never witnessed before. Curious, he asked a few patrons why they had come, and many showed him photos circulating on Facebook, explaining that they had come specifically to offer their support.
By 2pm, the influx of customers had left the restaurant overwhelmed, and they had run out of ingredients.
&ldquo;They had to apologise to latecomers, but customers were understanding, saying, &lsquo;It&rsquo;s okay, we&rsquo;ll come back tomorrow.&rsquo; By 4:30pm, only smoked beef and smoked lamb fried rice were left on the menu,&rdquo; he wrote.
While the user admitted that the food was slightly pricey, he still found it delicious and absolutely worth the cost.
This is a true example of the spirit of compassion and helping one another. While some may view feeding stray dogs as controversial, particularly from a Muslim perspective, the owner is simply offering care to animals in need. For animal lovers, like those who rallied around Kopi, the dog who was taken down by the Besut District Council, the support and unity of a community for animals speaks volumes. It&rsquo;s a powerful reminder of how solidarity can bring people together, as seen in this heartwarming situation.

In a video uploaded by Zestie on Instagram, a woman from Kedah revealed that she spent over RM1,000 to celebrate her achievement. Her breakdown included RM200 for her outfit, RM200 for makeup, RM250 for a photographer, and RM170 for accommodation.
Meanwhile, a male graduate mentioned spending around RM700 on his attire, while another opted for a more frugal approach, spending just RM175, stating he didn&rsquo;t see the need to splurge.
On average, graduates reported spending anywhere from RM200 to RM1,500 on clothing, makeup, and photography. Interestingly, one woman revealed she didn&rsquo;t spend anything at all, as her expenses were fully sponsored by her partner.
Netizens Leave Mixed Reactions
Scrolling through the comments section of the video, many netizens gave rather divided opinions on the cost spent on graduation. Some criticised the high expenses of some graduates and even compared them to the more modest spending habits of their own graduation days.
Others had also praised those who managed to celebrate their graduation by spending less than RM200, commending their efforts to avoid unnecessary spending (especially with this economy).
Though it is not wrong to spend on your convocation, many also agreed that the idea behind how much the students spend is a personal choice, viewing it as a form of self-reward for years of academic effort. Some also pointed out that those spending lavishly might already be employed, which could explain their higher budgets.

The team arrived at around 9 am but were unable to access the property until her staff arrived at 10:30 am. Once inside, they spent nearly four hours tagging and sealing items throughout the property.
Among the items seized were four luxury cars, which were taken under the writ of seizure. The only area of the house that remained untouched was Dato&rsquo; Seri Vida's bedroom, as it was locked. According to Samir, the legal team was unable to gain access to her room, and as a result, it was left out of the seizure.
This legal action follows a judgment by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on October 29, 2023, which ordered Dato&rsquo; Seri Vida to pay the outstanding debt. However, she failed to meet the deadline, prompting the issuance of the seizure order.

Taufik eventually filed a bankruptcy case against the consultancy firm, leading to a liquidator being appointed. However, the unpaid amount remained unresolved, forcing him to pursue the cosmetics mogul directly. After years of legal efforts, the case has now reached a critical point where her personal assets are at risk of being auctioned to settle the debt.

Dato Seri Vida has until December 9 to clear the outstanding amount, or her seized assets, including four luxury cars and items from her home, will be auctioned off. Her lawyer, Adnan Seman, has confirmed receiving the court documents and is reviewing them, stating that his client disputes the claim. Although it's always gratifying to see one's work appreciated, this time the excitement was overshadowed by the fact that AirAsia had not sought his permission to use the artwork.
Ernest shared his surprise on Instagram, tagging the airline and its founder, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, with the caption, "I think we need to talk..." He also posted a photo of an AirAsia plane at Penang International Airport on November 22, 2024, featuring his mural. Ernest emphasized that this wasn&rsquo;t the first time his work had been used without approval, but he intends to resolve the matter with AirAsia directly rather than pursuing legal action.

He also pointed out that this wasn&rsquo;t the first time his artwork had been used without authorization and stressed that a company like AirAsia should demonstrate greater corporate responsibility and respect for the intellectual property rights of artists. Ernest mentioned that his team has been trying to reach the right person at AirAsia but is finding it challenging to navigate through the company's bureaucracy. One strategy under consideration involves maintaining funding for programs where repayment rates exceed the target threshold, potentially holding back support for courses with lower repayment rates. Currently, PTPTN is considering setting a minimum repayment rate of either 30% or 50%, depending on further analysis and feedback from university partnerships.
"We want to work closely with institutions to instil a repayment habit among students," said Ahmad Dasuki. "By emphasizing loan repayments, we can ensure funds remain available for the next generation of students who need assistance." He also highlighted PTPTN&rsquo;s role in supporting academically qualified students in both public and private institutions.
RM74 Billion Disbursed, But Loan Recovery Remains A Challenge

Rafizi Proposes MyKad Scans At Petrol Stations To Verify RON95 Subsidy Eligibility

FashionValet, the popular e-commerce platform founded by Datin Vivy Yusof and Datuk Fadzaruddin Shah Anuar, is embroiled in a high-stakes financial controversy involving substantial public investments. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is investigating significant losses reported by two of Malaysia&rsquo;s largest sovereign wealth funds, Khazanah Nasional Bhd (Khazanah) and Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB), which together invested RM47 million in the platform in 2018.
To date, the funds have suffered combined losses amounting to RM43.9 million. As part of the probe, MACC has frozen approximately RM1.1 million across 17 personal and company bank accounts associated with the founders and seized luxury items during raids on their Mont Kiara residence.

The investigation, dubbed &ldquo;Op Favish,&rdquo; seeks to trace the origins and legitimacy of funds amidst growing public concern over potential financial mismanagement. During a raid at the couple's Mont Kiara residence, MACC seized items believed to be tied to allegedly suspicious financial activities, including 11 designer handbags and a luxury watch valued at RM200,000.
On the day of the raid, Vivy and Fadzaruddin arrived at MACC headquarters at 1 p.m. to provide their statements. Later, MACC officers accompanied them to their residence around 5:30 p.m., with the raid led by a team of 12 officers and the couple's legal counsel in attendance. The search reportedly lasted over two hours, concluding around 8 p.m. on November 6.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the raid and disclosed that the case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009, which addresses offences involving false claims or misleading financial information.

A recent report revealed that a striking 1.86 million Malaysian professionals have opted to move abroad, pursuing better career opportunities and personal development. This substantial outflow highlights the challenges local talent faces in finding fulfilling opportunities at home.
Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong, as reported by Sinar Harian, noted that this migration trend is outlined in the World Migration Report 2022 by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). According to the report, Malaysia&rsquo;s migration rate is 5.6% of the total population&mdash;significantly above the global average of 3.6%&mdash;translating to nearly 1.86 million Malaysians seeking futures abroad.
M&rsquo;sian Talents Divided Across Similar Countries

In the United States, for example, a large portion of Malaysians hold at least a Bachelor&rsquo;s degree and contribute their skills in fields such as management, business, science, arts, and professional services.
In the United Kingdom, many Malaysians work in sectors like management, healthcare, hospitality, and professional services, with most also holding at least a Bachelor&rsquo;s degree. Likewise, in Canada, a similar trend emerges, with Malaysians engaged in technical services, management, and healthcare sectors.
This data, collected from TalentCorp and the World Bank, will be further examined in upcoming studies that aim to provide detailed breakdowns of ethnicity, age, migration motivations, and key destinations for Malaysians from 2018 to 2024.
Putting Effort To Bring Out M&rsquo;sian Talents Home

Despite the substantial brain drain, the Ministry of Human Resources has been actively implementing initiatives to address the issue and attract Malaysians back home. Since its launch in 2011, the REP has processed 11,124 applications and successfully facilitated the return of 2,011 skilled professionals to Malaysia. This programme provides attractive incentives, including income tax exemptions, excise duty waivers for vehicles, and permanent resident status for family members, making it easier for Malaysians and their families to settle back into the country.

There are many reasons why Malaysians choose to move abroad, but for most, the main motivation is the opportunity to grow their wealth in dynamic job markets that offer better progression and career development. Another significant factor, especially for adults, is the perceived political stability and lower levels of corruption in other countries, which often fosters a more favourable work environment.
While the government is making efforts to retain talent, only time will reveal whether these initiatives are enough to encourage Malaysians to build their careers at home. As the saying goes, &ldquo;Rome wasn&rsquo;t built in a day,&rdquo; so it may take time to see if staying in Malaysia ultimately becomes the better choice for future generations.
