For Malaysians who frequently journey to Singapore, whether it's for leisure, a concert that may not be scheduled in Malaysia, or even just for a quick weekend getaway given Johor's proximity, navigating through immigration and enduring lengthy queues at checkpoints is a familiar challenge.
In response to this common issue, Singapore has implemented a convenient system allowing Malaysians driving into the country to clear immigration swiftly with a simple QR code scan. This QR code remains valid for a year from its generation date and can be obtained through the ICA application. According to reports, this system has the potential to save anywhere from 20 seconds to a minute for vehicles carrying between four to ten passengers.

While Malaysians heading to Singapore enjoyed the convenience of the QR code system, those travelling in the opposite direction still faced the familiar hassle of long waits at immigration. However, that's about to change, as Johor has at last revamped its system.
Johor To Introduce QR Immigration Clearance System At International Checkpoints

As technology continues to advance rapidly, we must keep pace with its evolution. One of the most efficient methods for completing tasks nowadays is through the utilization of QR codes. Widely employed in banking transactions, registration processes, and accessing various services, QR codes have become indispensable tools in modern life.
In this vein, Johor is poised to introduce the Quick Response (QR) Code Immigration Clearance System at both the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) in Johor Bahru and the Second Link Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB) in Gelang Patah later this year. The phased rollout of this innovative system is scheduled to kick off in June, with the aim of significantly reducing the time required for immigration clearance for the approximately 400,000 travellers who pass through these checkpoints daily.
Given Malaysia's unique geography, with borders separating Singapore to the south and Thailand to the north, Johor stands out as the pioneer state in Malaysia to implement the QR system at its international checkpoints.

Currently, the Immigration Department handles entry applications, such as permits and arrival cards, through their website, which can be a cumbersome process for many. It's reported that processing each passport at immigration typically takes around three minutes. However, with the introduction of the QR code system, this time could potentially be halved.
To utilize the QR system, individuals will be required to create a profile and generate a unique code via the Immigration Department&rsquo;s system. This code can then be self-scanned using smartphones for processing, effectively eliminating the need for manual passport processing.

According to a report by NST, Baharuddin Tahir, the director of the Johor Immigration Department, has opted not to disclose further details regarding the new QR system. However, he mentioned that the Home Ministry is set to make an official announcement in the near future. Meanwhile, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has expressed the state government's willingness to consider initiatives aimed at reducing traffic congestion.
&ldquo;If the QR clearance system proves to be effective in alleviating congestion at our land checkpoints, it should be implemented without delay, he said.
Now The Question Is Will We Need A New App and Is It Synced To The ICA App?

Given the differences in checkpoints, it's probable that we'll utilize distinct applications compared to our neighbours in Singapore who use the ICA app. Achieving synchronization between these systems might pose challenges, but it would be logical for them to align, allowing authorities on both sides of the Johor-Singapore border to effectively monitor cross-border movements.
As we await the official announcement, it's commendable that Johor has taken steps to enhance its infrastructure to facilitate smoother cross-border travel.
When considering the simplest route to Singapore, flying often comes to mind, given the ease of clearing immigration. However, opting for a flight entails higher costs, making it impractical to shell out a substantial sum for a short trip from Johor to Singapore.
