Have you checked out the latest Employees Provident Fund (EPF) Account 3?
In case you missed it, EPF has recently revamped its system and introduced a new Account 3 (Fleksibel) for members below 55 years old. This new account offers members the flexibility to withdraw funds whenever they need it. Account 3, which was launched on May 11th, will start from a balance of RM0. EPF members also have the option for a one-time transfer to shift funds from Account 2 (Sejahtera) to Account 3 (Fleksibel).

However, despite the promise of flexible withdrawals, reports have surfaced claiming that members can only withdraw up to RM250 per day. But is this claim accurate?
How To Withdraw Funds From Account 3?

EPF members may withdraw funds from Account 3 if there's sufficient balance. Account 3 starts with an initial balance of RM0, accumulating savings from subsequent contributions. Under the new restructuring, monthly EPF contributions are allocated as follows: 75% to Account 1 (Retirement), 15% to Account 2 (Well-being), and 10% to Account 3 (Flexi).
The minimum withdrawal amount is RM50, and applications can be made online via i-Akaun on the app, available on major app stores. For withdrawals exceeding RM250, an eKYC process is required, accessible online. If unable to complete eKYC online, verification can be done at EPF offices or Self-Service Terminals (SST) using thumbprints.
To do so, EPF has released a simple guide that users can follow:
Step 1: Login to your KWSP i-Akaun. Step 2: Tap withdrawal and select withdraw your savings. Step 3: Select Akaun Fleksible and select withdraw now. Step 4: Enter the desired amount that you want to withdraw then select continue. Step 5: Select &amp; update your banking details and select continue. Do note that the bank needs to be registered under your name. Step 6: Read through the Members Declaration and select Accept to continue. Step 7: Enter the TAC number and you&rsquo;ll be directed to a confirmation page indicating your application success.
Withdrawals from Account 3 don't necessitate any additional documentation, yet an operational bank account is necessary to facilitate the payment process. While physical presence for identity verification at offices isn't mandatory due to the availability of online options, this is contingent upon your withdrawal records and the sum requested, provided it's within RM30,000. In cases where there's no prior withdrawal history or if the bank account details differ, identity verification can be completed through two alternative methods:
<ul>
<li>Thumbprint verification via Self-Service Terminal (SST) at any EPC office, for withdrawal application amount of more than RM10,000, OR</li>
<li>Online verification, subject to withdrawal application amount of less than RM10,000.</li>

If you've requested the one-time transfer of funds from Account 2 (Sejahtera) to Account 3 (Fleksibel), EPF has indicated that it will take 3-5 business days.
For those with enough funds in Account 3 who have applied for flexible withdrawal, the payment will be transferred to your designated bank account within 7 business days upon approval of the application.
Transferring Funds Into Account 3 Using The i-Akaun App
Aside from withdrawing funds from Account 3, there's also the option of executing a one-time transfer from Account 2 to the recently established account. To initiate this transfer, simply click on "Learn More" under the banner titled "Akaun Fleksibel: Meet today&rsquo;s goals, shape tomorrow&rsquo;s dreams".

Once you've accessed the introduction to the new structure, proceed by clicking "Next" and then the "Transfer Now" button. Following this, you'll encounter an important reminder that must be acknowledged before proceeding with the transaction.
Within the designated one-time transfer window, you have the flexibility to transfer funds from Account 2 to either Account 1 or Account 3. Additionally, you'll receive a detailed comparison of your Account 1, 2, and 3 balances before and after the transaction. Please be aware that EPF regulations prohibit users from transferring funds from Account 1 to any other accounts.

Furthermore, it's important to note that users do not have the option to select the amount of money they wish to transfer to Account 3, as it is predetermined by the system. Following this, you'll be prompted to finalize the Member's Declaration and click "Accept" after reviewing the terms. Finally, please allow for a processing time of approximately 3 to 5 working days before the transfer is completed.
While it's now possible to withdraw funds from Account 3, it's not recommended unless absolutely necessary. Given the current economic conditions, with the cost of living nearing an all-time high, many Malaysians are diligently saving and seeking additional sources of income whenever possible.
In our opinion and coming from MYC! CEO, Jason Ko, who is an ex-investment banker, he says that withdrawing funds from EPF Account 3 should be based on careful considerations of affordability and should only occur in life and death situations. He advocates for keeping wealth where it generates the highest interest, as deferred expenses can accumulate significantly over time. He emphasizes the principle with a quote: "if you never see it, you never have it," suggesting that out-of-sight funds help in wealth accumulation.

EPF withdrawals, however, are often spent on non-essential items such as gifts for family or holidays based on a few studies. Referencing the chart above on Malaysians' financial self-sufficiency, it's clear that a significant portion of financial challenges arise from inadequate financial assets. The chart reveals that 65% of EPF members have savings of less than RM50,000, and that 50% of former EPF members exhaust their savings within five years, highlighting the urgency for better financial planning and restraint in fund usage.

In a bizarre and brazen plot that reads more like a scripted Netflix thriller than a real-world crime, two Chinese students have been charged in Malaysia for staging a fake kidnapping in a bid to extort five million yuan (RM2.9 million) from one of their parents. The elaborate scheme has since unravelled into a cautionary tale involving deceit, international travel, and a courtroom reckoning.
A Theatrical Crime Gone Wrong

The suspects &mdash; Ye Yingxi, 18, a student at the Singapore Institute of Management, and his alleged accomplice Zhang Runbao, 23, a student at the National University of Singapore (NUS) &mdash; thought they had devised a foolproof plan to swindle Ye&rsquo;s wealthy parents. On 2 May, the pair orchestrated a dramatic fake kidnapping at a hotel along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur, replete with disturbing video evidence to support their act.
In the staged footage, Ye appeared half-naked, bound, gagged, and soaking wet &mdash; an apparent victim of waterboarding and abuse. To further sell the illusion, the alleged kidnappers claimed he had been beaten and strangled. Voice-changing software was reportedly used to create convincing phone calls demanding the ransom.
The intent was to terrify Ye&rsquo;s 40-year-old mother, Cheng Zhiwen &mdash; a successful businesswoman based in Dubai &mdash; into handing over millions for her son&rsquo;s &ldquo;safe return&rdquo;.
Family Falls for the Hoax, Then Calls Authorities

The emotional manipulation worked &mdash; at least at first. Cheng, believing her son was in mortal danger, flew from Dubai to Singapore and onward to Malaysia, where she lodged a police report and handed over the distressing videos. The Chinese Embassy was also alerted.
What followed was a large-scale investigation involving multiple Malaysian law enforcement agencies and the Singaporean authorities. With no signs of forced entry or abduction, suspicion began to mount. Immigration and travel records revealed that Ye had crossed into Malaysia via Johor Bahru voluntarily after reportedly playing online games in Singapore the day before the incident.
A Trail of Lies Leads to Arrests &amp; A Scam Rooted in Past Rejection

As investigators followed the trail, Zhang was arrested at Penang International Airport on 4 May. Ye was later found in Baling, Kedah, suffering from a leg injury. He claimed to have been released and sought help by contacting his grandfather in China from a local police station.
However, inconsistencies in Ye&rsquo;s story during police interviews led to further scrutiny. The entire kidnapping narrative soon began to fall apart under pressure, exposing the elaborate ruse for what it truly was &mdash; an attempted fraud.
According to reports, the idea may have stemmed from an earlier failed attempt to get money from family. Just two months prior, Ye had allegedly approached his grandfather with a claim that he had been duped in a cryptocurrency scam and requested 40,000 yuan (about RM23,900). When the elder refused to comply, Ye appeared to have escalated his tactics dramatically.
Legal Consequences and Courtroom Developments

An alternative charge under Section 417 &mdash; for committing fraud in concert &mdash; also hangs over them, which can carry a maximum of five years&rsquo; imprisonment or a fine.
During proceedings before Judge Azrul Darus, both students pleaded not guilty. Bail was set at RM30,000 each, with two sureties. The judge also ordered them to surrender their passports as part of the bail conditions. The case is scheduled for mention on 27 May.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Syafina Radzuan is leading the case, while lawyers Ernie Sulastri Ahmad and Ramesh Sivakumar represent the accused.
The Final Act: A Costly Lesson in Consequences
From the luxurious promise of an international education to the cold confines of a Malaysian courtroom, the two students now face a harsh reality that no voice modulator or video editing trick can soften.
What may have seemed like an imaginative shortcut to wealth has turned into a grim legal battle &mdash; and potentially a decade-long prison sentence. In attempting to fake a crime, Ye and Zhang have found themselves caught in a real one.

A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded along the East-West Highway recently, where a baby elephant was struck and killed in a collision &mdash; the third reported elephant roadkill since 2024. A viral video captured the heart-wrenching sight of the calf&rsquo;s mother standing protectively over her baby&rsquo;s body for hours, reluctant to leave until sedated by wildlife officers.
The incident, which occurred on the stretch of road between Gerik and Jeli, cut through the heart of the Royal Belum State Park and Temengor Forest Reserve &mdash; two of Malaysia&rsquo;s most biodiverse and ecologically critical landscapes. These forests are key habitats for Malayan elephants, tapirs, sun bears, and the critically endangered Malayan tiger.
WWF-Malaysia: Short-Term Action is Crucial

&ldquo;We welcome long-term efforts such as the Perak Elephant Sanctuary and forest protection incentives, but we must act now with short-term solutions to stop the bloodshed,&rdquo; WWF-Malaysia stated.
WWF-Malaysia outlined a series of practical, cost-effective measures that the government and road authorities can implement to save lives &mdash; both animal and human:

<li>Install speed bumps at verified wildlife crossing hotspots to physically slow vehicles down.</li>
<li>Construct additional wildlife crossings, including underpasses and viaducts, to give elephants and other large mammals a safe way across highways.</li>
<li>Strictly enforce reduced speed limits, particularly during dusk-to-dawn hours when elephants are more active.</li>
<li>Expand wildlife corridor mapping to update where animals are currently moving due to habitat fragmentation.</li>
</ul>
These solutions, WWF notes, have been tested elsewhere in Malaysia with measurable success. For instance, a 200-metre wildlife viaduct at KM157 of the Gerik-Jeli Highway, built under the Central Forest Spine (CFS) Master Plan in 2015, has shown promise in reducing roadkill incidents &mdash; but it's currently the only one across a 100km stretch of road.
Shrinking Habitat, Rising Conflict

Peninsular Malaysia&rsquo;s elephant population is estimated at fewer than 1,500 individuals, and their habitat is shrinking rapidly. A 2016 study by WWF found that elephant roaming grounds in the peninsula have decreased by 68% over recent decades, largely due to land-use changes, agriculture, road expansion, and urban sprawl.
As a result, elephants are increasingly forced to cross roads and enter settlements in search of food and space, leading to rising conflict with humans. According to data from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), between 2020 and 2024, there were 4,919 reported human-elephant conflict cases, causing RM39.4 million in damage to property, crops, and vehicles.
WWF-Malaysia is urging a more coordinated approach across agencies, states, and communities to protect remaining elephant habitats and minimise dangerous encounters.
Government Response: 39 Wildlife Crossings Upgraded

&ldquo;These signs and lighting systems aim to inform drivers they&rsquo;re entering areas frequently used by elephants moving between forest patches,&rdquo; said KKR in a public statement.
Authorities have also deployed electrified fencing, salt licks to lure elephants away from highways, and LED-based wildlife warning systems in several high-risk areas. While these efforts mark progress, conservation groups warn they are not enough unless supported by stronger enforcement and more physical barriers to prevent accidents.
Calls for Broader, Tech-Based Solutions

<li>Advanced monitoring technologies, such as motion sensors and camera traps, to alert road users of wildlife presence.</li>

</ul>
&ldquo;These recommendations must be followed by real implementation &mdash; not just planning on paper,&rdquo; he added.
Know What to Do: Safety Tips for Drivers in Forest Zones

<li>Avoid night-time driving through known elephant zones, particularly during full moons or rainy weather, when visibility is low and elephant activity peaks.</li>
<li>Slow down and dim your lights if you see animals or receive headlight signals from other vehicles.</li>
<li>Never use high beams, honk, or provoke elephants &mdash; these actions may trigger aggression.</li>
<li>Do not stop to take photos or approach elephants. These are wild animals and can react unpredictably.</li>
<li>Turn back if an elephant displays warning signs such as ear flapping, trumpeting, or mock charges.</li>
</ul>
Remember, elephants can move up to 40km/h and may attack if threatened.
The Bigger Picture: Coexistence Requires Collective Effort

Malaysia&rsquo;s Forests: A Precious, Fragile Legacy
Malaysia remains one of the few places on Earth where wild elephants, tigers, and tapirs can still be encountered in their natural habitats. But that legacy is hanging by a thread. As development continues, the fate of these species depends on whether we choose to build a future where nature and humans can safely coexist.

More than a decade after the horrific downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, the United Nations&rsquo; aviation body has formally ruled that the Russian Federation was responsible for the 2014 air disaster over eastern Ukraine, which killed all 298 people on board. Shared by Facebook user Bang Rajan VII in a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/487246842365526/posts/1325506565206212/">local community group</a>, the post featured a video and several photos of vehicles parked in a shopping complex, each with what appeared to be summons slips placed on their windscreens.
At first glance, the situation raised red flags&mdash;why would cars parked legally within a shopping centre receive summonses? Many assumed it was the latest phishing ploy targeting unsuspecting Malaysians.

Upon closer inspection, however, eagle-eyed netizens spotted inconsistencies in the summons slip. A glaring typo&mdash;&ldquo;Jalan Pegankutan Jalam 1988&rdquo;&mdash;was one clue, but the biggest giveaway came from the plate number printed on the notice: &ldquo;MALF2025&rdquo;. It turns out, the &lsquo;summons&rsquo; was actually an unorthodox promotional gimmick for the upcoming Malaysia Auto and Lifestyle Festival (MALF2025), set to take place from 13 to 15 June 2025 at Sepang International Circuit. The official website of the event was even listed discreetly at the bottom of the slip.

Shopee sellers are bracing for yet another increase in operational costs as the e-commerce platform confirmed a hike in its SPayLater seller fee. The change, set to take effect on 8 May 2025, will see the fee rise from 3.5% to 4.5% for all completed orders involving the SPayLater payment option.
The update was announced through Shopee&rsquo;s official Seller Education Hub, continuing a trend of rising charges for merchants using the platform.
What Is SPayLater?

Instalments up to three months typically carry no extra fees for buyers, but longer tenures can incur charges of up to 36%, depending on the duration.
However, while buyers may choose whether or not to use SPayLater, sellers are automatically enrolled in the programme with no option to opt out. This means they must absorb the associated transaction fee regardless of whether they benefit directly from the instalment feature.
Why Are Sellers Frustrated?

&ldquo;My business has to contend with more and more extra fees, and I&rsquo;d need to hire someone just to operate and manage the sales channel,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s pushed my business away from focusing too much effort towards selling on Shopee.&rdquo;

He remarked that many Malaysian graduates are now trapped in low-income jobs despite the country&rsquo;s economic growth, and are increasingly unable to meet basic life milestones such as home or car ownership.
Recalling his own experience, Muhammad said he earned RM1,300 upon entering the job market in 1984. Today, a typical fresh graduate earns between RM2,000 and RM3,000 monthly&mdash;a marginal increase in nominal terms that doesn&rsquo;t reflect the sharp rise in living costs. When adjusted for inflation&mdash;assuming a conservative annual rate of 5%&mdash;today&rsquo;s graduates should be earning closer to RM7,000 to RM8,000 to match the purchasing power of their 1980s counterparts.
&ldquo;In real terms, salaries today are only a third of what they used to be,&rdquo; he said, adding that if current trends continue, today&rsquo;s young people may never enjoy the same quality of life his generation did.
The Rise of the Low-Income Graduate

&ldquo;Without major reforms in our education and economic frameworks, we are condemning our youth to a future dominated by low-skilled, low-paying jobs,&rdquo; he said. He warned that Malaysia continues to lag behind other nations that were once on par with or even behind Malaysia in the 1960s, including Taiwan, South Korea, China, and Japan&mdash;all of which now enjoy far higher standards of living due to sustained structural reform.
Foreign Labour Suppressing Wage Growth

These foreign workers primarily fill 3D (dirty, dangerous, and difficult) jobs in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, agriculture, food services, and domestic work. While these jobs are often shunned by locals, the influx of low-cost labour from countries like Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nepal has created wage suppression for Malaysians in similar roles.
&ldquo;When employers can hire workers cheaply, they have no incentive to raise wages for locals. This affects our citizens directly, particularly those in the B40 segment,&rdquo; Muhammad explained.
A Growing Brain Drain: Nurses, Labourers, and the Search for Better Pay

Malaysia is not only failing to retain its skilled workforce&mdash;it is also losing talent to neighbouring countries with better wages. For example, JobStreet data shows that a nurse in Malaysia earns between RM2,700 and RM3,400 a month, while in Singapore, the salary ranges from RM11,000 to RM13,000. Even Saudi Arabia offers nearly RM7,000 per month.
Beyond white-collar professionals, Muhammad noted an increase in Malaysians crossing into Singapore to perform menial work. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just brain drain&mdash;it&rsquo;s now even low-skilled drain,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If we don&rsquo;t address this soon, Malaysia may one day become a labour-exporting country, with our children working as maids or labourers abroad.&rdquo;
Income Reclassification Misses the Bigger Picture
In response to the government&rsquo;s recent proposal to update income classifications&mdash;changing the B40, M40, and T20 system to B20, M50, and T30 based on consumption data&mdash;Muhammad said the new categorisation risks masking the real challenges of wage stagnation and cost-of-living pressures.
He argued that income-based benchmarks remain critical, as consumption patterns can be misleading, particularly when driven by debt or necessity. &ldquo;If you use the older income definitions, the B40 group probably now encompasses 60% of the population, not just 40%, due to post-COVID economic strain, low savings, and wage stagnation.&rdquo;
