Siti Nurul Masyitah Md Elias, a national kayak athlete and student at Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan (PIS), tragically fell victim to an accident along the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL). Her motorcycle was struck and dragged for 600 meters by a car allegedly driven by an intoxicated individual.
Footage of the incident, which went viral on social media, captured the suspect driving erratically before colliding with and dragging Siti Nurul Masyitah. Johor Bahru Selatan district police chief ACP Raub Selamat confirmed the arrest of the suspect, a man in his 30s, the day following the incident.

Subsequent to authorities administering a breathalyser test, it was discovered that the suspect's alcohol level exceeded the legal limit. Additionally, a urine test conducted on the individual yielded negative results for narcotics.
"The accident occurred while the victim was riding a motorcycle on the EDL Highway heading to Kota Tinggi when he was hit by a Toyota Vios driven by the suspect from behind at 4.30pm. His car had changed direction suddenly from the middle lane to the left lane and hit the victim,&rdquo; he said.

Siti Nurul Masyitah, who proudly represented Malaysia at the 2023 Sea Games, secured a bronze medal in the dragon boat kayaking event, bringing honour to our nation. Presently, she is undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is reported to be in stable condition following surgery for fractures in her pelvis and right shoulder, as confirmed by her brother, Muhamad Syafiq (29).
&ldquo;Both surgeries were done simultaneously, and the doctor mentioned that the upcoming procedure will be cosmetic surgery, as the skin cannot be taken from other parts of her body,&rdquo; he said.
Her mother Saloma Ramli (58) expressed hope for justice for her daughter and remarked that she was saddened and wanted the perpetrator to be dealt with appropriately by authorities. &nbsp;
As Siti Nurul Masyitah continues her treatment, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Adam Adil Abd Halim, expressed regret that she is unlikely to participate in the upcoming 2024 International Canoe Racing Federation (ICF) Long Boat Championship. Scheduled for October 30 to November 3 in Palawan, Philippines, the event coincides with her extended recovery period, posing a challenge for her participation.
Drive Pleads Not Guilty For Causing The Accident

Dhinesh (31), an assistant factory supervisor, faced charges in the Magistrate&rsquo;s Court for drunken driving resulting in injuries to our national kayak athlete. Despite the charges, he pleaded not guilty after they were presented before Magistrate Nur Fatin Mohamad Farid.
According to a report by BuletinTV3, Dhinesh's blood alcohol level measured 178 milligrams/100 millilitres, exceeding the prescribed limit of 128 milligrams/100 millilitres by 50 milligrams. Additionally, he has seven outstanding traffic summonses on record.
Charged under Section 44 (1)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), Dhinesh faces potential imprisonment for up to 10 years, a fine of up to RM50,000, license revocation, and disqualification from obtaining a driving license for up to seven years upon conviction.
Currently, Dhinesh's driver's license is suspended pending the case's resolution, and he is required to report to the Skudai Police Station monthly. Unrepresented by legal counsel, the Prosecuting Officer sought a bail of RM20,000 with one surety. Dhinesh appealed for a lower bail amount, citing financial constraints due to familial responsibilities and a monthly income of less than RM2,000.
Ultimately, the court granted Dhinesh bail of RM8,000 and scheduled a re-call on June 24 for document submission and the appointment of legal representation.

&ldquo;The learned trial judge did not fairly evaluate the defence and wrongly treated it as a mere denial,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;There was no element of dishonesty when Syed Saddiq instructed his staff to withdraw party funds, as he was legally entitled to do so at the time.&rdquo;
The court ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the core elements of the offences, particularly the intent required for criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation, and money laundering. According to the judgment, the failure to properly direct the trial and the misinterpretation of legal standards warranted full appellate intervention.

Syed Saddiq, 32, had been convicted in 2023 on four charges:
