This system aims to ensure more seamless travel between the two countries, especially during busy border times. It&rsquo;s estimated that each passenger can save about 20 seconds at each checkpoint, which can add up to a whole minute for a car with up to 10 passengers. Moreover, the QR code helps optimize the system and remains valid for a year from the entry date or until the passport of the QR holder expires, providing added convenience.

Malaysia Introduces A Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) Starting 1 October

According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, the regulation, which initially began in 2019, will apply to entry points at both the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) complex at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) in Johor Bahru and the CIQ Complex at the Sultan Abu Bakar Building at the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link.
"Since April 2019, we have implemented the registration of VEP for foreign-registered vehicles crossing the CIQ Complex at Sultan Iskandar Building in Tambak Johor and the CIQ Complex at Sultan Abu Bakar Building. To ensure that foreign vehicle owners fully comply with road regulations in Malaysia, the Transport Ministry wishes to inform you that the VEP regulations will be fully enforced starting 1 October.
"Anyone driving a foreign-registered vehicle without VEP before entering or while in Malaysia is committing an offence under Section 66H (7) of the Road Transport Act 1987. If convicted, you may be fined up to RM2,000 or imprisoned for up to six months as stipulated in Section 119 (2) of Act 333," he said.
Vehicles Without VEP Can be Barred From Entering Malaysia Or Will Be Prevented From Leaving The Country

In addition to having a VEP, vehicles found without one will face action from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) for breaching Section 66J of the Road Transport Act 1987, which addresses outstanding issues related to foreign motor vehicles. This implies that vehicles without a VEP may have committed a road offence or have outstanding summonses, which must be settled before they are allowed to leave the country.
The VEP will be mandatory for all categories of foreign-registered vehicles.
There are three categories for it and it would mainly affect vehicle ownership:

<li>Commercial (businesses)</li>
<li>Government (including embassies and consulates)</li>

VEP-registered vehicles will be equipped with a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag for RM10, a significant reduction from the current RM20 fee for each entry of a foreign-registered private vehicle into Malaysia. Each VEP registration will be valid for five years.
How To Apply For The VEP In Malaysia?

To complete your VEP registration, follow these steps:

<li>Visit the official VEP website: <a href="https://vep.jpj.gov.my">https://vep.jpj.gov.my</a></li>
<li>Sign up by creating a profile. After registration, you will receive a confirmation email at your registered email address.</li>
<li>Click the URL link in the confirmation email, which will redirect you to the TCSens portal at <a href="https://vepams.jpj.gov.my">https://vepams.jpj.gov.my</a></li>
<li>Log in using the same user ID and password to complete your VEP registration. Before proceeding, download the Touch 'n Go app and register your eWallet account.</li>
<li>Submit the four required documents: certificate of entitlement, national registration identity card, motor insurance, and authorization letter.</li>
</ol>
You will receive an email notification once your application has been approved.

Once your application is approved, you can obtain your VEP RFID tag either by postage or by self-collection at a VEP collection centre managed by TCSens. If you choose self-collection, you must call ahead to make an appointment and bring your appointment slip with you. If you assign someone else to collect it, an authorization letter will be required.
Tag Acknowledgement &amp; Attaching The Tag To Your Vehicle

Once you've received the VEP RFID tag, you'll need to perform an acknowledgement via the TCSens portal. Click on the acknowledgement button corresponding to your vehicle number and insert the serial number for validation.
Following this, adhere to the guidelines provided and affix the VEP RFID horizontally on the left headlamp, the passenger side of the vehicle. Ensure that the tag is not placed on the curved portion of the headlamp.
Finally, take a photo of the installed VEP RFID tag alongside your registration plate and upload it to the TCSens portal at <a href="https://vepams.jpj.gov.my">https://vepams.jpj.gov.my</a>.
VEP RFID Covers Payments For Road Charge And Toll Fees Throughout Malaysia

One thing to note is that the VEP RFID is non-transferable and each tag is unique for each vehicle. If one were to change the ownership of the vehicle, it would automatically cease the validity of the VEP RFID tag said the Road Transport Department.
You must also update the following details whenever they expire:

<li>Road tax expiration date</li>
<li>Insurance information, including company name, policy number, and expiration date</li>
<li>Vehicle owner's passport number and expiration date</li>
<li>Vehicle owner's license information and expiration date</li>
<li>Driver's license information and expiration date</li>
<li>Change of vehicle ownership</li>
<li>The vehicle owner is also required to review and update the vehicle's details every five years.</li>
</ul>
Furthermore, if you enter Malaysia with an expired VEP RFID tag, you will incur a penalty of RM150.

Instead, the high-profile couple is accused of transferring the RM8 million from FashionValet Sdn Bhd into a separate entity they also owned &mdash; 30 Maple Sdn Bhd &mdash; without obtaining approval from FashionValet&rsquo;s board of directors. The alleged financial misconduct is said to have taken place on 21 August 2018 at Public Bank&rsquo;s Bukit Damansara branch in Kuala Lumpur.
Trial Dates Set for 2026

According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, the prosecution intends to call 26 witnesses to testify over the course of the trial.
Vivy and Fadzarudin, both aged 37, were not present during the recent case management hearing on 23 June 2025, as their legal counsel had secured an exemption from court attendance. The couple continues to be represented by lawyer M. Athimulan.
Pleading Not Guilty to CBT and Alternative Charge

Additionally, the couple faces an alternative charge under Section 403, also read with Section 34, for dishonestly misappropriating property belonging to the company. This charge carries a lighter penalty &mdash; a prison term ranging from six months to five years, and may also include caning and a fine upon conviction.
Both Vivy and Fadzarudin have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

In a harrowing case that has sent shockwaves across Malaysia, a former MasterChef Malaysia finalist and her ex-husband have each been sentenced to 34 years in prison for the torture and murder of their 28-year-old Indonesian domestic helper. The case, heard at the Kota Kinabalu High Court, exposed disturbing details of prolonged abuse suffered by the victim, whose death came amid the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Victim Abused in Silence

The court found that Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Mohd Sulong, 37, and her former spouse, Mohammad Ambree Yunos, 44, were jointly responsible for the death of Nur Afiyah Daeng Damin. The crime took place over several days between 8 and 11 December 2021 at their shared residence in Amber Tower, Lido Avenue Condominium, located in Penampang, Sabah.
The prosecution revealed that Nur Afiyah, who had migrated from Indonesia to work as a maid, was subjected to persistent mistreatment and inhumane working conditions. She was not only deprived of wages and basic rights, but also physically tortured over an extended period. Photos and videos presented in court&mdash;recovered from the couple&rsquo;s own mobile phones&mdash;graphically captured the abuse she endured in the days leading up to her death.
Brutality Captured on Camera

According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Dacia Jane Romanus, the abuse was systematic and deliberate. &ldquo;This was not a killing born out of rage or a single moment of violence,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It was prolonged, premeditated torture, with no regard for the victim&rsquo;s humanity.&rdquo;
The videos and images showed visible signs of physical injury, with the court hearing that the couple had even documented the abuse themselves, seemingly without remorse. The disturbing nature of the footage strengthened the prosecution&rsquo;s argument that the pair had every intention of inflicting harm and had acted with a shared purpose.
&ldquo;This was a young woman who left her home to earn a living honestly in the midst of a global pandemic,&rdquo; Dacia told the court. &ldquo;She died not in an accident, not in an act of sudden violence, but as a result of sustained, systematic cruelty at the hands of those who were supposed to protect and shelter her.&rdquo;
Court Delivers Verdict and Sentencing

Presiding over the trial, High Court Judge Datuk Dr Lim Hock Leng ruled that the evidence proved beyond reasonable doubt that both Etiqah and Ambree acted with common intention to murder Nur Afiyah. Their failure to provide medical care, food, and fair treatment, paired with overwhelming evidence of injury and abuse, led to their conviction.
The two were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which pertains to murder committed by more than one person. This section allows for the death penalty, or imprisonment for not less than 30 years and up to 40 years, as well as not fewer than 12 strokes of the cane for those not sentenced to death.
While the Attorney-General&rsquo;s Chambers initially pushed for the mandatory death sentence, Judge Lim instead imposed 34 years of imprisonment for both individuals, citing the severity of the crime and the strength of the evidence. Ambree was also ordered to receive 12 strokes of the rotan, while Etiqah was exempted from caning due to her gender, in line with Section 289 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Both convicts, who had previously been out on bail, were ordered to begin serving their sentences immediately from the date of conviction.
Defence Fails to Raise Doubt

In his judgement, Judge Lim noted that the defence had failed to raise any reasonable doubt in the face of overwhelming forensic and photographic evidence. The nature, location, and duration of the victim&rsquo;s injuries were consistent with repeated and intentional infliction of harm, and not an accident or isolated incident.
The court also noted the emotional and psychological torment suffered by the victim, who had been isolated from any form of external support or protection. The judge highlighted how this case reflects not just individual criminality, but also broader systemic vulnerabilities faced by domestic workers&mdash;particularly foreign nationals&mdash;living in private homes in Malaysia.
Prosecution: &ldquo;A Case That Shook the Nation&rdquo;

Calling the crime one of the most distressing cases of recent years, DPP Dacia Jane Romanus urged the court to consider the broader impact on society. &ldquo;The brutality of this case has not only appalled Sabah, but the entire country. It speaks to a failure in how we treat those who come into our homes to serve and support us.&rdquo;
She added that Nur Afiyah was not only denied wages and freedom of movement but was also robbed of dignity and life. &ldquo;She was never allowed to return home. Her body did, but her hopes, her sacrifices, were extinguished behind closed doors,&rdquo; she said.
Public Backlash and Broader Concerns
The case has reignited public outrage over the treatment of domestic workers in Malaysia, particularly those from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia. NGOs and human rights groups have long campaigned for better safeguards and routine checks, as many workers operate without contracts, proper wages, or protection from abuse.
The fact that Etiqah had once gained public recognition as a finalist in MasterChef Malaysia 2012 made the case all the more shocking, with many questioning how someone in the public eye could inflict such cruelty behind closed doors.
Justice Served&mdash;But Questions Remain
With the sentence now handed down, many hope the conviction marks a turning point in how the legal system handles cases of domestic worker abuse. However, activists caution that without consistent enforcement and policy reforms, many other cases may remain hidden.
Meanwhile, the victim's family in Indonesia is left grappling with a painful loss. No amount of sentencing, they say, can replace the daughter who left to provide for her family and returned in a coffin.
This case stands as a chilling reminder: justice, when delayed or denied, often comes too late for the vulnerable. For Nur Afiyah, the courtroom brought justice after death. For others still living under oppression, it may be the only hope.
