Recall the old adage "cash is king"?
Undoubtedly, having cash on hand provides us with the financial freedom to acquire whatever we desire or require at a moment's notice. However, the irony of this age-old saying is that physical cash seems to have become increasingly rare in our daily transactions.

With technology advancing rapidly each year, it's undeniable how much easier it has made our daily lives. Nowadays, instead of lugging around a bulky wallet or loads of cash, everything we need is right at our fingertips, all thanks to our mobile phones.
Our smartphones have become incredibly versatile, serving as our go-to tool for nearly everything (except, of course, filing taxes). The convenience has skyrocketed with the availability of apps that allow us to make payments through digital or mobile wallets. Among the favourites for Malaysians are the MAE app, CIMB, Touch 'n Go e-wallet, Grab Pay, Boost, and, for some, WeChat Pay.
For those who believe Malaysia is lagging behind in the cashless society trend, think again. According to Adyen, Malaysia is actually leading the global pack in mobile wallet usage.
63% Of Users Actually Prefer Mobile Wallets For Shopping

According to Adyen's 2024 report, a significant majority of Malaysians (63%) have expressed a preference for using mobile wallets while shopping, marking the highest rate globally.
Their survey, conducted from January 15th to February 1st, drew data from a retail report encompassing 38,000 shoppers and 13,000 merchants across 26 markets. In Malaysia, the survey included 1,000 consumers and 500 businesses.
The report highlights a noticeable shift, with approximately 41% of consumers in Malaysia opting to forgo physical wallets. Shoppers also favour quick and convenient methods like QR codes or touch-and-pay for transactions.
Shoppers Frequently Use Social Media To Shop

Interestingly, the survey results revealed that 73% of respondents have made online purchases through social media platforms, with TikTok Shop emerging as the top choice. Moreover, enabling social commerce has led to revenue growth for 73% of merchants, which is 44% higher than the global average.
Adyen's report also notes that Malaysians typically shop from these platforms approximately six times a month, extending across popular platforms like Shopee and Lazada.

Adyen also highlighted that millennials represent the largest demographic of social media shoppers compared to other age brackets, with an impressive 80% having made purchases in the past year.
Conversely, Gen Z users demonstrated the most significant growth, with 17% of them being first-time shoppers in the previous year. The survey also suggested that businesses are adjusting their strategies to align with the evolving preferences of customers which also contributes to the 73% of revenue growth thanks to engaging in social commerce.
And thanks to trust being built between the buyer and seller, at least 45% of users are likely to stick with merchants who let them purchase directly through social media platforms.
In the meantime, Soon Yean Lee, the Country Manager for Adyen Malaysia, observed that these findings indicate a significant move among Malaysians towards digital payments and social commerce, placing Malaysian consumers at the forefront of the worldwide mobile wallet trend.
&ldquo;To maintain customer loyalty and stay competitive, businesses must be agile in meeting these changing usage preferences,&rdquo; he emphasised.
Malaysia One Of The Selected Targets For Cyberattacks &amp; Data Breaches
An astounding 95% of retailers reported instances of cyberattacks or data breaches in 2023, positioning Malaysia as the second most targeted country globally after Canada, as per Adyen's findings.
Sixty-five percent of these businesses acknowledged that fraudulent transactions and chargebacks had significantly impacted their operations and profitability, surpassing the global average of 51%. To counteract fraud and minimize chargebacks, Adyen indicated that 69% of Malaysian businesses are contemplating partnering with their payment providers to introduce charge-back liability guarantees.

Explaining the concept of chargebacks, Lee mentioned, "A fraudster may purchase a product from the website and receive the goods, but then calls the bank to dispute the charge, claiming non-receipt."
To tackle fraud, Lee recommended that merchants implement built-in risk management driven by machine learning to detect and prevent fraudulent activities while ensuring a seamless experience for genuine customers.
While emphasizing the importance of implementing authentication requirements for online purchases to mitigate fraudulent charge-backs, Lee also underscored the need to minimize friction for loyal customers.
In conclusion, the surge in e-wallet usage can largely be attributed to the enticing offers they provide, with each platform tailored to meet specific user preferences. From cash-back incentives to discounted movie tickets and point-based reward systems, e-wallets offer a myriad of benefits to users.
However, is the rise of e-wallets truly signalling the demise of cash? Not quite. Certain aspects of daily life, such as paying for parking at select malls or purchasing goods at smaller markets, still necessitate the use of cash. So while e-wallets may be revolutionizing the way we handle transactions, cash still retains its relevance in certain situations.

A ferry travelling from Ketapang Port in East Java to Gilimanuk Port in Bali sank late on Wednesday night (2 July 2025), just 25 minutes into its journey across the Bali Strait, one of Indonesia&rsquo;s busiest inter-island routes. The ferry, named KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, was carrying 65 people on board&mdash;53 passengers and 12 crew members&mdash;along with 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks.
The ferry capsized at approximately 11:20pm, and by 12:22am, it was found overturned and drifting. Initial reports point to a combination of engine trouble and rough weather conditions, with waves reaching up to two metres (6.5 feet), contributing to the tragic incident.
Death Toll Rises as Search Efforts Intensify

Authorities have deployed nine rescue vessels, two tugboats, two inflatable boats, and a helicopter, alongside a team of underwater divers and local fishermen, to aid in the rescue operation.
According to Nanang Sigit, head of the Surabaya Search and Rescue Office, search efforts are focused along the waters between the accident site and Gilimanuk Port, where several early survivors were found. He added that the improved weather on Thursday has allowed for a more concentrated water-based search.

Families of the missing gathered at both Ketapang and Gilimanuk ports, anxiously awaiting updates. Some broke down in tears; others called out the names of loved ones still unaccounted for.

In a forward-looking initiative, teachers across the state are receiving specialised AI training, enabling them to introduce this transformative technology into their classrooms &mdash; not just as a tool, but as a teaching philosophy grounded in ethics, innovation, and impact.
This initiative is driven by a desire to ensure that education in Sarawak does not lag behind global technological trends, while also responding directly to the needs and aspirations of teachers on the ground.
The Moral Compass of Technology

&ldquo;We have to tell our students that AI is just a machine,&rdquo; Abang Johari said. &ldquo;A machine without feeling, without emotion. But we are human &mdash; and it is we who must decide how the technology is used.&rdquo;
Using the analogy of a kitchen knife, he explained that while tools can serve many beneficial purposes, they can also cause harm if misused. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s why education is key. AI must be used to improve lives, not to damage them. Our role is to guide that process.&rdquo;
He further highlighted AI&rsquo;s growing role in Sarawak&rsquo;s economy, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, and the social sector, making it imperative that educators are equipped to keep up with changing demands across all industries.
Hands-On Innovation: A Glimpse into the Training Programme

Meanwhile, secondary school teachers joined the Young Inventors Challenge (YIC), which delved deeper into AI integration through PictoBlox, a visual programming platform, and AI-integrated Arduino hardware. Teachers were mentored by IEEE student volunteers, who helped them explore how AI could be used to solve community challenges.
One standout project was a visual aid device for the visually impaired, developed by a team of teachers with no prior coding experience. Using image recognition and motion sensors, they prototyped a tool that could guide visually impaired students through school corridors &mdash; a powerful reminder of how innovation can arise when empathy and technology intersect.

We spark a ripple effect &mdash; one that can influence an entire generation to see innovation not as something abstract, but as a tool for solving real problems.&rdquo;
Chumbaka, known for its storytelling-based approach to digital education, sees this model as one that could be scaled across Malaysia. The organisation emphasises inclusivity &mdash; ensuring that schools even in smaller towns like Miri are not left behind as AI and digital literacy become global imperatives.
Looking Ahead: From Pilot to Policy
The Sarawak government now appears committed to expanding this initiative statewide, with strong indications that similar programmes will reach rural and interior schools in the near future. Premier Abang Johari has reiterated his belief that AI should be woven into every sector &mdash; and that education is where this transformation must begin.
Deputy Minister Abdullah also highlighted the importance of collaboration between ministries, universities, and civil society in building a tech-literate population. &ldquo;The interest is already there among our teachers. Our job is to nurture it, support it, and scale it.&rdquo;

Afiq resides in Johor Bahru (JB), Malaysia, where he owns a sprawling two-storey landed golf villa valued at RM1.4 million. But to fund this lifestyle, Afiq crosses the Malaysia-Singapore border every single day to work as a Grab delivery rider in the city-state.

While the income sounds impressive, Afiq is the first to admit the job is far from glamorous. He estimates riding over 250 kilometres a day, exposed to Singapore&rsquo;s unpredictable weather. Some days, it&rsquo;s punishing heat; on others, sudden downpours soak riders mid-route. Beyond that, riders must stay constantly alert &mdash; navigating traffic, avoiding accidents, and meeting tight delivery timelines.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s either scorching hot or you get drenched,&rdquo; he explains. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s exhausting, and you&rsquo;re risking your life on the road every single day.&rdquo;
His typical day may not involve office meetings or air-conditioned cubicles, but it demands more stamina and situational awareness than many white-collar jobs.
Despite the hardships, Afiq says mental discipline is the key. &ldquo;You are your own boss, but people forget that being a boss is hard. There&rsquo;s no one chasing you to work &mdash; so you have to be consistent and motivated.&rdquo;

Discipline, Not a Shortcut: How Afiq Built His Routine

Afiq has been a Grab rider for over two to three years, and he is quick to shut down any myths about easy money. While his earnings are impressive, he stresses that they are the result of clear goals, daily routines, and a willingness to endure discomfort.
He keeps detailed records, sets weekly targets (like hitting 180 orders), and takes advantage of platform incentives. On one particular week in May, he earned S$1,283 before incentives, and an additional S$150 bonus for reaching his delivery goal.
But it&rsquo;s not all sunshine and windfalls. &ldquo;If I take a week off, my income drops to around S$4,000,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;But if I work every day &mdash; seven days a week for the whole month &mdash; I can get close to S$7,000.&rdquo;

&ldquo;I feel less stressed, less cramped, and more at peace,&rdquo; he shared. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s the best of both worlds &mdash; I earn in Singapore, but I live in comfort in Malaysia.&rdquo;
No Career Ladder, But a Path to Freedom
While Afiq is proud of his achievements, he is realistic about the nature of platform work. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s no promotion, no HR department planning your career,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s not for everyone. You have to make it work for you.&rdquo;
He praises Grab for offering workshops and training to equip riders with skills, but maintains that success ultimately depends on personal discipline. &ldquo;The flexibility is great &mdash; but don&rsquo;t misuse it. Set goals. Stick to them. Show up every day.&rdquo;

In response to these challenges, the Ministry of Health has moved forward with legislative reforms designed to bolster Malaysia&rsquo;s specialist workforce and ensure fairer access to advanced medical care.
Effective from 1 July, the Medical (Amendment) Regulations 2025 and the Medical Act (Amendment) 2024 have come into force. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad described the changes as a major step towards creating a more transparent, inclusive, and competency-based system for medical specialists.
Key features of the amendments include:

<li>Streamlining recognition and registration of specialists from both the Parallel Pathway and local postgraduate programmes.</li>
<li>Ensuring fair and competency-based evaluation processes.</li>
<li>Strengthening the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) to make it more representative and accountable.</li>
<li>Establishing clear service pathways for specialists to continue serving the public health system.</li>
<li>Expanding public access to high-quality specialist treatment nationwide.</li>

Dr Dzulkefly added that the first wave of specialists under the Parallel Pathway would cover cardiothoracic surgery, plastic surgery, and family medicine, while genetic pathology would be included under the Master Programme route.
The reforms aim not only to fill existing gaps in specialist availability but also to provide long-term stability for Malaysia&rsquo;s healthcare system&mdash;by improving training pipelines, retaining local talent, and ensuring more equitable distribution of expertise across the country.
A Healthcare System at a Crossroads
The situation at Sungai Buloh Hospital is emblematic of wider structural issues within Malaysia&rsquo;s public healthcare sector&mdash;issues that cannot be solved overnight.
