If the name isn't self-explanatory, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are automobiles powered either entirely or partially by electricity. Unlike traditional vehicles that depend on internal combustion engines fueled by petrol or diesel, EVs utilize electric motors and batteries. This leads to zero tailpipe emissions, positioning them as environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional cars (or are they?).
As of 2024, EVs have gained significant traction worldwide, including in Malaysia. The global shift towards sustainable energy and the increasing concerns about climate change have accelerated the adoption of EVs. In Malaysia, the government has implemented various incentives and policies to promote EV usage, leading to a noticeable rise in their popularity.

Examining the landscape, it's evident that the top-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Malaysia is the Build Your Dream (BYD) Atto, hailing from China, commanding a staggering 18.7% share of the EV market. Despite Tesla's longstanding presence, China's technological prowess has propelled its EV offerings to compete fiercely, with the Tesla Model 3 closely trailing at 11.9%.
Following suit is the BMW iX, securing an 11% share, notable for being one of the few sizable SUVs available as an EV. In 2024, BMW ceased production of the iX40 models in Malaysia, redirecting focus to the iX50 and iX60 variants, boasting enhanced features and extended range.
Behind the BMW iX, we find the BYD Dolphin, with the Tesla Model Y and Porsche Taycan rounding out the sales figures in Malaysia, albeit with smaller market shares. The comparatively lower popularity of the Model Y and Taycan can be attributed to their premium pricing and distinctive aesthetics. While the Porsche Taycan exudes futuristic appeal, its exorbitant price tag places it beyond the reach of many consumers, despite its cutting-edge features.

As part of the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), Perodua, leading the production of affordable EVs, has developed an electric prototype with an international automotive partner, likely Daihatsu, a Toyota subsidiary. Zafrul praised Perodua for advancing Malaysia&rsquo;s electric vehicle technology and sustainable mobility.
The next-generation Myvi, potentially codenamed 'D01D', may be Perodua's first EV, possibly leading EV development for the Daihatsu family, which currently lacks a passenger car EV in Japan. According to Perodua&rsquo;s model release schedule, the D01D/EV might be launched in 2026, following the D66B SUV in 2024 and the new Bezza in 2025.

Proton revealed details of its upcoming models in February. According to Proton CEO Dr. Li Chunrong, the company will soon launch its EVs, with a second model following 6&ndash;8 months later. Although specifics remain undisclosed, this indicates Proton's commitment to its New Energy Vehicle (NEV) transition.
At the Proton X90 launch, Geely&rsquo;s Founder and Chairman, Eric Li Shufu, emphasised their aim to support Proton in the NEV transformation, with plans to introduce at least one NEV model annually. NEVs include hybrid electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles, and battery electric vehicles.

However, fast forward to 2024, and most major malls in town now support EV charging stations. Various apps, such as PlugShare, Jom Charge, Setel, ChargeEV, Go To-U, and ParkEasy, help EV owners locate charging stations. These apps provide up-to-date information on the location, availability, and pricing of charging stations.
It's important to note that charging costs can vary depending on the provider and the type of charging station. For the fastest charge, look for stations that support DC charging, which typically have higher fees compared to slower AC chargers.
2026 Road Tax Calculator
Recently, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) announced a new road tax structure for electric vehicles (EVs) effective from January 1, 2026, after the current exemption ends on December 31, 2025.
The new road tax rates in Malaysia are based on the EV's power output, divided into 11 groups. Group A covers up to 100kW, while Groups B to J range from 100.001kW to 1,010kW in 109.999kW increments. Group K is for EVs exceeding 1,010kW.
Within each group, there are sub-blocks of 9.999kW, with an additional fee for each block. The new tax ranges from RM20 to RM20,000. Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that the rates will be reviewed every five years to assess their impact on government revenue and the transition to zero-emission vehicles.

Recently, Malaysian street artist Cloakwork recently expressed his disappointment on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DHF3IogycmB/?img_index=1">social media</a> after discovering that his murals on several old bus stops in Kuala Lumpur had been painted over. His work, which aimed to revitalise neglected public spaces, was removed by Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), sparking public debate over the decision.
Cloakwork is celebrated for his ability to transform dull, urban spaces into striking, vibrant murals. In late 2024, he took it upon himself to restore a number of derelict bus stops across the city. These stops were originally constructed with attached mini-shops that provided underprivileged individuals a space to sell snacks and beverages to commuters. However, as Kuala Lumpur modernised, these mini-shops disappeared, leaving behind shelters that fell into neglect&mdash;graffiti-covered, litter-strewn, and largely abandoned.
A Labour of Love&mdash;Erased Overnight

While many saw decay, Cloakwork saw potential. Using his artistic talents, he brought life back to these forgotten spaces with vibrant murals that immediately captured public admiration. However, earlier this month, Cloakwork was shocked to find that his murals had been completely erased, with the bus stops returned to their dull, neglected state. The artist took to Instagram to voice his frustration, directly addressing DBKL:
&ldquo;Dear DBKL Malaysia, why did you remove my art? These old-fashioned bus stops were originally built by the government to help the underprivileged by allowing them to run small kiosks selling drinks and snacks. Today, only a few of these bus stops remain, and many are in a terrible state. One day, I passed by one and thought&mdash;why not use my skills to give it a fresh, vibrant makeover and bring some life back to the area?&rdquo;
Public Outcry: A Question of Priorities
His post quickly gained traction, with netizens expressing outrage over the removal of his work. Many questioned why authorities prioritised covering up harmless public art instead of addressing more pressing urban issues.
Cloakwork&rsquo;s criticism was direct: &ldquo;Instead of spending taxpayers' money to cover my harmless art, why not try to fix the potholes on the road?&rdquo; His statement resonated with many, reigniting discussions about the city&rsquo;s maintenance priorities.
Supporters argued that street art enhances urban spaces, adding character and cultural value. They pointed to international cities such as Melbourne, Berlin, and London, which actively encourage public murals as a form of urban beautification. In the niche world of designer toy collecting, where limited-edition figurines can fetch staggering prices, a Malaysian con artist has orchestrated a fraud that has left more than 30 victims empty-handed. This scammer vanished with nearly RM300,000, luring collectors in with promises of exclusive Royal Molly figures&mdash;only to disappear without delivering a single item.
A Carefully Crafted Deception

The fraudster, a live-streamer who had built a strong reputation within the collector community, used his online presence to earn the trust of buyers. He cleverly priced his Royal Molly figures to appear like a great deal&mdash;affordable enough to attract interest but not suspiciously cheap. Exploiting the fear of missing out (FOMO) that drives many collectors, he managed to secure payments from multiple buyers before vanishing into thin air.
One victim, identified as Ms A, was personally approached by the scammer, who knew of her enthusiasm for Royal Molly figures. On 5 February, she placed an order with a promised delivery date of 5 March. However, the excuses soon began rolling in&mdash;first, he blamed shipping delays from China, then tried to upsell her a different colour variation for an extra RM500. By 7 March, he finally admitted he had never placed her order. Despite promising a refund, he disappeared, leaving Ms A with a RM7,488 loss and no collectables to show for it.
A Web of Deception Unravelled

As more victims began realising they had been scammed, they connected through social media and formed a WhatsApp group&mdash;a support network for those who had fallen prey to the fraud. The scale of the scam became clear: over 30 collectors had been swindled, with individual losses ranging from RM1,000 to RM35,000. In total, the stolen amount was nearly RM300,000&mdash;enough to purchase a small apartment.
Eventually, the victims managed to track down the scammer&rsquo;s brother. However, his response was nothing short of insulting&mdash;he proposed a repayment plan of RM500 per month, a sum so small it would take decades to fully repay the victims. To make matters worse, he issued a threat: if anyone reported the fraud to the police, all repayments would cease immediately, turning the situation into a financial hostage crisis.
A Shameless Display of Audacity

If the scam itself was not outrageous enough, the fraudster&rsquo;s next move was even more shocking. Under mounting pressure from victims demanding their money back, he claimed his mother had been hospitalised. Instead of returning any of the stolen money, he had the audacity to ask his victims for loans ranging from RM2,500 to RM5,000, supposedly to cover urgent medical expenses. It was an act of deception within a deception which really blew the mind of many.
As of now, only three victims have officially filed police reports, while others have either accepted the slow repayment plan or decided to cut their losses. The scammer, meanwhile, is believed to be overseas, potentially surrounded by a collection of Royal Molly figures bought with stolen funds.
A Costly Lesson for Collectors
This case is a stark reminder of the risks associated with unchecked trust in online purchases, particularly in tight-knit collector communities where passion often overrides caution.

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, who has been approached by victims for assistance, has urged more people to come forward and report the fraud. He advised that the scammer should be given one last opportunity to refund the money before the matter is escalated legally.
Ultimately, this incident serves as a harsh reality check: in the world of designer toys, the most valuable commodity isn&rsquo;t a limited-edition figurine&mdash;it&rsquo;s financial prudence. No collectable, no matter how exclusive, is worth the risk of losing thousands to a scam, leaving victims with nothing but regret and empty shelves.
