We are all aware that Malaysia's economy is currently facing challenges. Contributing factors include global economic instability due to ongoing conflicts and domestic issues related to government stability. In an effort to address these challenges, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced on Tuesday (18 June) that Malaysia has expressed interest in joining the BRICS intergovernmental organization.

Anwar added that the formal procedure will commence soon, following discussions with Brazil&rsquo;s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He is also awaiting a response from the South African government.
In a statement, Anwar mentioned that Malaysia has already clarified its policy and made its decision, with formal proceedings with the BRICS geopolitical bloc set to start shortly. He emphasized that the primary motivation for Malaysia's application to join BRICS is to assert the right of smaller nations like Malaysia to make independent political decisions.
&ldquo;We can no longer accept the scenario where the West wants to control the discourse,&rdquo; said Anwar.
The outcome of Malaysia's membership will depend on the response from South Africa. Joining BRICS holds strategic importance for Malaysia, given that the Straits of Malacca is a crucial shipping lane connecting the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
What Exactly Is BRICS And What Do They Do?

The acronym BRIC, representing Brazil, Russia, India, and China, was coined in 2001 by Jim O'Neill of Goldman Sachs, who studied the economic potential of developing nations. He predicted that these four countries would shape the global economy and politics in the 21st century.
BRICS now stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Initially formed in 2006 with four members, the group expanded in 2010 when South Africa joined, officially becoming BRICS.
In January 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates joined the group, and Malaysia is expected to follow soon.
BRICS aims to unite the world's most significant developing nations to challenge the political and economic dominance of wealthier countries in North America and Western Europe. Members convene annually to set priorities through consensus, focusing on economic cooperation and political and security collaboration. The presidency rotates annually among members.
This year, Russia holds the presidency, taking over on January 1, 2024, with a commitment to the motto: "Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security." Russia last held the presidency in 2020.
On March 5, 2024, Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian President, announced that the 2024 BRICS Summit would be held in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24, marking the first summit with the new members. Ushakov stated that Russia's focus would be on enhancing political, security, economic, financial, cultural, and humanitarian ties among BRICS nations.
BRICS&rsquo; Has Quite A Number Of Accomplishments

Since forming BRICS, member countries have significantly improved their economic standings. BRICS countries have also tripled their share of global GDP in recent years. In 2015, they established the New Development Bank (NDB) to provide an alternative to the Western-dominated International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. The NDB supports public and private projects through various financial instruments. Headquartered in Shanghai, China, the bank has regional offices in Johannesburg, South Africa; Sao Paulo, Brazil; GIFT City, India; and Moscow, Russia.

China&rsquo;s meteoric rise in economic power has attracted interest from several countries, including traditional US allies such as Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand. These nations have either expressed interest in joining BRICS or have already become members, seeing this as a sign that the US&rsquo;s dominance as the sole global superpower may be waning.
Considering BRICS' increasing share of global GDP compared to the G7 at purchasing power parity, Malaysia's future prospects appear promising. This development holds the potential to substantially bolster the country's economy and navigate it out of the current inflationary pressures on goods.

A catastrophic aviation disaster unfolded on Thursday, 12 June, when an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Flight AI171, bound for Gatwick Airport, was carrying 242 individuals, including 217 adults, 11 children, two infants, and a crew of 12. The aircraft plummeted into a residential area, crashing directly into a hostel attached to a medical college in the Meghani Nagar neighbourhood during lunchtime. Among the deceased were hostel residents, including medical students, doctors, and their families.

Only One Survivor Pulled from the Wreckage

In a rare miracle, one passenger survived: a British national of Indian origin named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. Seated in seat 11A, next to an emergency exit, Ramesh was able to escape the burning wreckage. He sustained multiple injuries but remained conscious and coherent when transported to hospital.
&ldquo;Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,&rdquo; Ramesh told the Hindustan Times from his hospital bed. &ldquo;When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance.&rdquo;
Footage taken after the crash showed Ramesh bloodied and limping as he was helped into an ambulance. Police later confirmed he had managed to jump from the aircraft through the emergency exit, and that he remains the only known survivor.
Devastation on the Ground

The destruction was not limited to those on board. At least 24 people on the ground perished when the aircraft struck the building. Many others were injured. Witnesses described the crash as sounding like a bomb explosion, and some felt the ground shake as if during an earthquake.
&ldquo;My son is safe, and I have spoken to him,&rdquo; said a woman named Ramila, whose son had just returned to the hostel for lunch. &ldquo;He jumped from the second floor, so he suffered some injuries.&rdquo; Another local, Poonam Patni, recounted the horror: &ldquo;When we reached the spot there were several bodies lying around and firefighters were dousing the flames. Many of the bodies were burned.&rdquo;
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the victims. Authorities have asked families of the deceased to provide DNA samples for identification due to the severe burns suffered by many victims.
Cause of Crash Still Unknown
The aircraft had only just departed Ahmedabad&rsquo;s runway when it issued a Mayday call. Moments later, it vanished from radar. CCTV footage showed the plane struggling to climb before falling rapidly and disappearing from view, followed by a massive fireball rising from behind residential buildings.

Air traffic control confirmed the Dreamliner took off at 1.39pm and lost contact shortly after. The flight tracking website Flightradar24 reported that the plane&rsquo;s signal was lost less than a minute after take-off. Notably, video analysis suggested the landing gear was still down, which aviation experts noted as unusual for that stage of flight.
US aerospace safety consultant Anthony Brickhouse remarked: &ldquo;If you didn&rsquo;t know what was happening, you&rsquo;d think the plane was on approach, not take-off.&rdquo; The exact cause remains unknown, but mechanical failure or pilot error has not been ruled out.
First Crash for Boeing 787 Dreamliner

US President Donald Trump described the incident as &ldquo;terrible,&rdquo; while British authorities confirmed they were working with Indian counterparts to support affected families.
Three of the British victims were identified as Akeel Nanabawa, his wife Hannaa, and their young daughter, Sara. Gatwick Airport has set up a special reception centre for relatives of passengers.
Investigation Underway

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is working closely with Boeing and GE, while the UK&rsquo;s Foreign Office is providing consular support to affected families.

The tragedy has left the city of Ahmedabad in mourning, with vigils being held outside hospitals and homes of the deceased. Scenes of relatives awaiting news or identification at the city&rsquo;s morgues underscore the profound human cost of the crash.

Tragedy In Ahmedabad: Over 240 Dead In Air India Crash, British Man Sole Survivor

What began as a suspected break-in at a family home in Bukit Rambai, Melaka, during the early hours of 12 June, has now been confirmed as a deeply troubling domestic tragedy. A 51-year-old single mother, Vernita Boon (also reported as Wen Qiu Yan in some sources), and her 21-year-old eldest son, Lim Boon Kai, were found brutally stabbed to death in the living room of their home in Taman Rambai Mutiara.
Initial reports suggested a robbery, but police have since revealed that the perpetrator was not an external intruder. Instead, the horrific attack was allegedly carried out by Boon&rsquo;s second son, a 17-year-old schoolboy, who is believed to have been driven by pent-up resentment stemming from constant academic pressure.
Early Morning Horror: From Bedroom to Bloodshed
