Taylor&rsquo;s University has concluded its highly anticipated Taylor&rsquo;s University Film Festival (TUFF) 2024. Now in its fourth year, since its inauguration in 2019, TUFF continues to provide a dynamic platform for film and media students, as well as aspiring and emerging filmmakers, to showcase their talents.
The month-long festival, organized by academics and students from the School of Media and Communication (SOMAC), featured a diverse array of film screenings, collaborative workshops, forums, and an awards night. These events, made possible through partnerships with industry leaders and support from the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), ACE Pictures, and RED Communications, provided participants with real-world insights and strategies for overcoming challenges in film production. Additionally, DJI Malaysia introduced attendees to the latest in drone technology and aerial content creation.

This year's TUFF saw an impressive increase in film submissions, with a total of 113 entries from both Malaysia and around the world. This surge in participation underscores the festival&rsquo;s growing international reputation among young filmmakers eager to make their mark as producers and directors. Submissions came from countries including Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
&ldquo;Films hold a profound influence on society, serving as a powerful medium for storytelling, and holding a dynamic force that shapes and reflects the world we live in, guiding societal evolution and enriching our collective consciousness. Inspired by this, we are dedicated to cultivating the next generation of visionary filmmakers through TUFF. The festival&rsquo;s Film Showcase event, held at Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), featured 11 nominated films, including a short film by a Taylor&rsquo;s University student. GSC also hosted a special screening of the best Impact Lab-themed short documentaries produced by students from Taylor&rsquo;s University&rsquo;s Bachelor of Mass Communication (Honours) in Digital Media Production program. Since last year, TUFF has recognized student-produced documentaries that align with the Liveable Urban Communities Impact Lab, an initiative aimed at improving urban living conditions and creating vibrant, sustainable communities in Malaysia.
&ldquo;We believe in nurturing and fostering the potential of our students through platforms such as TUFF. The festival not only showcases their incredible talents but also equips them with invaluable industry insights and experiences. The festival concluded with an awards ceremony at The Grand Hall, Taylor&rsquo;s University, where 14 awards were presented to both local and international filmmakers. New categories this year included the Audience Choice Award, Best Urban Community Documentary, and Jury Honourable Mention. Special guests presenting the awards included Dato Kamil Othman (Chairman of FINAS), Professor Hassan Muthalib (Father of Malaysian Animation), Lina Tan (RED Communications), and Pan Vui Shang (Head of Operations of Golden Screen Cinemas). The event was also attended by notable figures in the local film industry such as film director and theatre practitioner Khairi Anwar, television producer Zabrina Fernandez, film director Derrik Yaw, and ACE Pictures Entertainment producer Peter Wong.
TUFF 2024 has once again highlighted Taylor&rsquo;s University&rsquo;s commitment to fostering the next generation of filmmakers and supporting the creative arts industry.

A 20-year-old female student from Kuching, Sarawak, was tragically found murdered in her dormitory room at the Mutiara Ville condominium in Cyberjaya on Tuesday, 25 June 2025. In a dramatic conclusion to one of Malaysia&rsquo;s most high-profile political court cases in recent years, former Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has been fully acquitted of all corruption-related charges by the Court of Appeal. Justice Noorin explained that the trial judge had erred significantly in assessing the evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defence. In particular, she stated that the judge failed to consider key pieces of contradictory evidence and had accepted witness testimony that may have been made under duress from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
&ldquo;The learned trial judge did not fairly evaluate the defence and wrongly treated it as a mere denial,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;There was no element of dishonesty when Syed Saddiq instructed his staff to withdraw party funds, as he was legally entitled to do so at the time.&rdquo;
The court ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the core elements of the offences, particularly the intent required for criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation, and money laundering. According to the judgment, the failure to properly direct the trial and the misinterpretation of legal standards warranted full appellate intervention.
The Charges and What They Meant
Syed Saddiq, 32, had been convicted in 2023 on four charges:

<li>Abetting criminal breach of trust involving RM1 million from Bersatu Youth (ARMADA) funds;</li>
<li>Dishonestly misusing RM120,000 from a company linked to ARMADA, allegedly for personal use;</li>
<li>Two counts of money laundering, involving RM50,000 each, transferred into his Amanah Saham Bumiputera account.</li>
</ul>
The High Court had ordered the sentences for CBT and misappropriation to run consecutively, meaning he faced seven years in jail. The money laundering convictions would have added an additional two years, running concurrently. Syed Saddiq&rsquo;s sentence also included two strokes of the rotan and a RM10 million fine. The sentence had been stayed pending the appeal.
Emotional Reactions in the Courtroom

The former minister&rsquo;s reaction to the acquittal was visibly emotional. Dressed in a black suit and tie, Syed Saddiq nodded silently and wiped away tears as the judgment was read. Once the verdict was delivered, he embraced his mother and father, Syed Abdul Rahman Abdullah Al-Sagoff, before performing sujud syukur &mdash; a prostration of gratitude &mdash; on the steps of the courtroom.
Present during the hearing was actress and singer Bella Astillah, a close friend of the family, who was seen seated with his relatives, wearing a floral blue baju kurung.

Syed Saddiq was represented by a formidable defence team comprising Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden and Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, while Deputy Public Prosecutors Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin and Farah Ezlin Yusop Khan led the prosecution.
The court has since ordered that his passport and bail money be returned. The Attorney General&rsquo;s Chambers has not yet confirmed whether it will seek to appeal the decision to the Federal Court.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for restraint and compassion following a highly charged student protest at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), where a caricature of his face was burned during an anti-corruption rally. In a move widely seen as an effort to preserve democratic space and uphold academic freedom, Anwar directed both the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) and UMS to refrain from taking disciplinary action against the students involved.

The Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally, held on 21 June at Lintasan Deasoka, Kota Kinabalu, was organised by UMS student group Suara Mahasiswa. The protest, which reportedly attracted around 100 participants, lasted for 22 hours and aimed to draw attention to alleged corruption in Sabah, along with ongoing issues affecting students, including a water supply crisis on the UMS campus.
However, the act that made headlines was when two students set fire to a large placard bearing Anwar&rsquo;s caricature and the words: &ldquo;MADANI: Protector of Sabah corruption.&rdquo; The imagery and bold message sparked both condemnation and debate.
One of the organisers, final-year student Fadhil Kasim, later took responsibility for the act on social media, defending it as a symbolic gesture rooted in historical student activism.
Activism Echoes Anwar&rsquo;s Reformist Roots

In his statement, Fadhil invoked the legacy of Anwar Ibrahim himself &mdash; who, as a student leader in the 1970s, led similar acts of protest. He pointed to Anwar&rsquo;s involvement in burning a copy of 13 Mei, a book by Malaysia&rsquo;s first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, during a student demonstration over perceived injustices.
&ldquo;We were inspired by Anwar&rsquo;s own activism. Just as he once burned a book he believed undermined the truth, we burned his caricature to highlight betrayal and hypocrisy,&rdquo; Fadhil wrote. &ldquo;I&rsquo;d like to think Anwar, upon seeing the video, would be reminded of who he once was.&rdquo;
He also added that the outrage from Anwar's loyalists &mdash; including youth groups such as ABIM and AMK &mdash; missed the point, as they were more concerned with optics and reverence than the actual issues being raised.
UMS: Burning Was &lsquo;Immature and Uncivilised&rsquo;

UMS, however, has firmly condemned the act. Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor described the incident as &ldquo;uncivilised, immature, and unreflective of the intellectual standards expected of university students.&rdquo;
He confirmed that 13 students had been identified as participants in the protest, and two were directly involved in burning the caricature. The university indicated that disciplinary proceedings were being considered under the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU). A committee of academics would be established to review the matter and determine appropriate action, including possible suspension or expulsion.
Despite the criticism, the protest&rsquo;s central message appears to have struck a chord with many Malaysians disillusioned by the slow pace of anti-corruption efforts, particularly in East Malaysia.
Police Investigation Underway

Separately, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun confirmed that the protest is under investigation for alleged breaches of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, which regulates public demonstrations. He said organisers may have failed to comply with certain procedural requirements.
Reports later surfaced that two student activists were detained in connection with the protest. This further intensified public scrutiny, with some quarters warning that criminalising student dissent could erode public trust in democratic institutions.

His call to protect the students&rsquo; academic futures was met with cautious praise from some civil society groups, though others noted that true reform would also mean ensuring institutions like UMS do not retaliate through backdoor disciplinary action.
While the fallout from the protest continues to unfold, the Prime Minister&rsquo;s move to shield students from academic punishment marks a significant gesture &mdash; one that could set the tone for how future expressions of youth activism are received in Malaysia.
