In life, we all have numerous friends, but many of us choose to keep our circle small, trusting a select few with everything, sometimes even our lives.
However, even within a tight-knit group, betrayal can occur. Some friends might take advantage of us or, in extreme cases, sell us to a syndicate for money.
Such actions highlight not only a deep sense of desperation and moral corruption but also reflect the challenging economic conditions in Malaysia, driving people to extreme measures for quick financial gain.
M&rsquo;sian Man Rescued After Being Held Ransom In Myanmar

According to a report by the New Straits Times, the 37-year-old victim, who wishes to be identified as Law, revealed he was deceived by a friend he had known for nearly a decade.
In May, this friend proposed an all-expenses-paid trip to Bangkok, Thailand, to attend a religious ritual and enjoy a holiday. However, as Law prepared to depart on May 7, his friend gave him a bottle of water, causing him to quickly lose consciousness.
Sounds like something straight out of the opening scene of the K-Drama Vincenzo right?
By the time Law regained consciousness, he found himself on a boat headed to an unknown location. Unbeknownst to him, he was being taken to the Thai border town of Mae Sot before being transported to Myanmar. Law recounted that he was held hostage in Myanmar, where he endured severe abuse while the syndicate demanded an RM50,000 ransom from his family.
&ldquo;They beat me with sticks and metal rods, and even slit my left wrist and neck. There was another Malaysian and four Chinese nationals held hostage with me. Our captors said our families had to pay the ransom if we wanted to return,&rdquo; he revealed.
Burmese Soldier Helped Protected Him

During his ordeal, Law was grateful to have met a Burmese soldier who spoke Malay. This soldier protected him for two weeks until representatives from the Malaysian Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) managed to bring him back home.
Upon his return to Malaysia on 9 July, Law tried to contact his "friend," but the number was no longer in service. The details of his escape were not disclosed, but he has provided all crucial information to the authorities to aid further action.

MHO secretary-general Datuk Hishamuddin Hashim remarked that Law was fortunate to have escaped and encountered the soldier who helped him. He urged Malaysians to be cautious of free travel and job offers, especially those involving travel to Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
The organisation also strongly advised against paying ransoms in such situations, as it could complicate rescue efforts and does not guarantee the victim's release. Paying ransoms encourages kidnappers to continue their criminal activities and puts the victim at greater risk, as seen in numerous past cases.

In recent years, a troubling number of Malaysians have become victims of human trafficking schemes while seeking lucrative job opportunities to increase their savings. Unfortunately, many have been forced into slave labour, criminal gangs, or scam call centres.
It is imperative to put an end to this trend by raising awareness and encouraging vigilance among Malaysians when considering job offers abroad, especially those that seem too good to be true.

Sometimes, trusting friends can become uncertain, and if we sense any suspicion creeping in, it's wise to start creating some distance or even consider severing ties altogether.
