IOC To Host The First Olympic Esports Games In 2025

A historic milestone was achieved today during the 142nd International Olympic Committee (IOC) session. The IOC has announced the creation of the Olympic Esports Games, with the inaugural event scheduled for 2025 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The proposal, endorsed unanimously by the IOC Executive Board, also includes a 12-year partnership with the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Saudi Arabia.
IOC President Thomas Bach stated, &ldquo;The creation of the Olympic Esports Games marks a new era for the IOC. By embracing the digital revolution, we are connecting with the Esports community and demonstrating the Olympic brand's appeal to younger audiences. The Saudi Arabian NOC will bring valuable Esports experience to this initiative, aligning with the Olympic Charter and values.&rdquo;
The IOC has been involved with Esports since 2018, culminating in the successful Olympic Esports Week in Singapore in 2023. Following this success, the IOC Esports Commission, led by David Lappartient, developed the Olympic Esports Games project. This new initiative aims to engage the Esports community while upholding Olympic values, including promoting gender equality and attracting a young audience.

While sporting fans around the world are getting ready to tune in for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games events such as swimming, gymnastics, athletics and for us Malaysians our favourite Badminton and Cycling events, the future is now set for viewers to also tune unto video games at the world stage which is pretty exciting considering we do have a number of Malaysian Esports stars.
While esports fans seem largely indifferent to the news, the future implications could be big when it comes to the future of the industry and how it could impact the growth of competitive gaming on a larger level, according to Gen.G CEO Arnold Hur.
&ldquo;This may not matter much to the average esports fan, but this has huge implications for government and educational support for Esports at all levels,&rdquo; Hur said. &ldquo;Whether it&rsquo;s renting a venue for a match in Seoul or receiving course credit for an esports/gaming industry course this is big.&rdquo;
What Esports Titles Will Be Featured?

In the wake of the decision, efforts are already underway to determine the city and venue for the inaugural Olympic Esports Games. Details regarding the event schedule, game titles, and player qualification processes will be announced in due course.
Given the Olympic context, it&rsquo;s unlikely that popular FPS games like Counter-Strike 2 or Call of Duty will make the roster. However, we can anticipate the inclusion of games such as League of Legends, Rocket League, Street Fighter, Tekken, iRacing, NBA 2K, FIFA, and mobile games like Mobile Legends.

The state&rsquo;s decision follows growing public concern about the visibility of vape marketing, particularly near schools and public areas, which critics say normalises the habit among impressionable youth.
Vaping Among Teen Boys Described as &lsquo;Alarming&rsquo;

&ldquo;These statistics are not just numbers; they represent thousands of young lives potentially heading down a path of addiction and health problems,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;We cannot afford to be passive. The time to act is now.&rdquo;
Online Sales Remain a Key Regulatory Challenge

Despite the legal nuances, Selangor is calling for widespread support to ensure the success of its anti-vape campaign. Jamaliah said that the cooperation of parents, schools, healthcare professionals, and civil society organisations is vital to changing the tide of vape use among teens.
&ldquo;We welcome the active involvement of stakeholders at all levels&mdash;state, federal, and grassroots&mdash;to ensure these measures are effective and enduring,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;This is not just a government effort. It must be a collective societal responsibility.&rdquo;
