Travelling can be both an exhilarating adventure and a frustrating ordeal. For many Malaysians, taking time off work to enjoy some well-deserved relaxation is something to look forward to, but sometimes, unexpected disruptions can throw a wrench in those plans, often due to circumstances beyond our control.
Recently, Malaysia Airlines took to social media to address and apologize for an incident where passengers on a scheduled flight from Doha to Kuala Lumpur were stranded at Hamad International Airport for over 24 hours due to engine issues with the aircraft.
And before you rush to criticize any airline, it's worth noting that the plane in question, an Airbus A330-300, boasts a strong safety record, especially when compared to its competitor, Boeing.

On Monday, 12 August, flight MH165, scheduled to depart at 8:05 a.m. local time, was grounded due to engine problems, leaving many passengers stranded and frustrated.
In a statement released on 14 August, Malaysia Airlines confirmed the extended delay and acknowledged that it also impacted subsequent flights between Kuala Lumpur and Doha on 13 and 14 August.
"Malaysia Airlines apologizes to passengers for disrupting their travel plans and appreciates their patience and understanding," the airline stated, as reported by the New Straits Times.
The airline assured passengers that it is working diligently to resolve the technical issues. Those affected by the delay were rebooked on alternative flights provided by Qatar Airways, and some were accommodated in nearby hotels in Doha with full-board meal arrangements. Despite these efforts, many passengers reported experiencing a lack of clear communication and support from the airline, describing the situation as chaotic.

On Instagram, Lyn shared multiple photos of Imane, explaining that she aimed to capture the boxer&rsquo;s essence and spirit.

Returning to the current situation, Lyn described the scene at Hamad International Airport as chaotic and disorganized. She and a group of Malaysians, including herself, were stranded for over 24 hours, facing confusion and uncertainty about the ongoing situation.

Lyn reported that passengers' passports were collected several times with scant information about the next steps. Additionally, those stranded did not receive meals or care packages.
MAS Endured Heavy Criticism On Social Media
As the situation developed, X user Faizal Hamssin (@faizalhamssin) shared his experience, revealing that many passengers, including children and the elderly, were left without hotel accommodations or basic necessities such as water and food. He also criticized Malaysia Airlines for its inadequate communication and expressed concerns about the maintenance of its aircraft. Many others later followed and also shared their experiences with the particular flight and route.

In fact, if you were to do a search into MH165 on X, it reveals a history of recurring technical issues, particularly on this travel route. News reports have highlighted instances of engine shutdowns mid-flight and subsequent diversions which also resulted in passengers getting stranded. 
It may be time for Malaysia Airlines to address these concerns with Airbus, the aircraft manufacturer. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved promptly to prevent similar problems on future flights along this route.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) To Be Implemented Starting 8 January 2025

Starting January 8, 2025, Malaysians travelling to or transiting through the UK will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This digital permit will be mandatory for short-term visitors who do not currently hold a UK visa or immigration status. The British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has announced this new requirement as part of a broader global rollout, which began in November 2023 and will extend to all visa-exempt countries by April 2025.
The ETA is designed to enhance border security and streamline the immigration process, aligning with similar measures implemented by countries like the US and Australia. This initiative aims to create a more efficient, digital immigration system that is both quicker and more secure for the millions of travellers who enter the UK each year.
Will Be Introduced In Stages

Malaysians will be able to apply for the ETA starting November 27, 2024. The application process is straightforward and can be completed via the UK ETA app or on the GOV.UK website. The application is generally processed within three working days, though using the app may result in a faster decision. The ETA costs &pound;10 (~RM56) and is valid for two years, allowing for multiple entries into the UK with stays of up to six months at a time. However, if you get a new passport, you will need to apply for a new ETA.
It&rsquo;s crucial to understand that the ETA is not considered as a visa. Malaysians planning to reside in the UK for more than six months, such as for work or study, will still need to apply for a visa. However, it&rsquo;s noted that those who already hold a valid UK visa do not need to obtain an ETA. The British High Commission has clarified that while the application and approval process is managed by UK Visas and Immigration, their office in Kuala Lumpur is not involved in this process.
As this new requirement comes into effect, it&rsquo;s important for travellers to stay informed and ensure they have the necessary documentation to avoid any disruptions to their plans. Staying updated on these changes and planning ahead will help make your journey to the UK as smooth as possible.

Otter Attacks Jogger At Kinabalu Park
In a surprising turn of events, a woman was attacked by a group of otters at a recreational park in Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu on the morning of September 11.
The victim, Mariasella Harun, was on her usual morning jog at Perdana Park around 6:10 a.m. when the incident occurred. After completing 2 km, she noticed something emerging from a drain and initially thought it was a cat. However, to her shock, an otter suddenly leapt at her and bit her, soon followed by a group of otters surrounding and attacking her.

Mariasella recounted how she struggled for what felt like five agonising minutes, trying to fend off the animals until other joggers rushed to help.
She sustained multiple injuries to her arms, legs, and head, and was immediately taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she received antibacterial treatment and a rabies vaccine. Doctors advised hospitalization for further observation, though they couldn&rsquo;t stitch her wounds yet due to the risk of complications from the bites.
Still recovering and visibly shaken, Mariasella mentioned that while she had spotted otters at the park during previous runs, she never approached them, only taking videos from a distance. She emphasised that she had not provoked the animals and couldn&rsquo;t understand why they attacked her.

Wildlife Department Advises Public To Stay Away From The Otters

After the attack, Sabah Wildlife Department director Roland Niun noted that this was the first reported otter attack in the area, calling the aggressive behaviour highly unusual for these typically harmless creatures. A team has been sent to investigate, with Niun explaining that otters can be fiercely protective of their pups and are known to be territorial.
It&rsquo;s believed the otters entered the park through a <a href="https://www.astroawani.com/berita-malaysia/sekumpulan-memerang-mengganas-serang-pengunjung-taman-rekreasi-487399">damaged fence</a> while searching for food. The fence has since been repaired, but the public is encouraged to report any sightings of otters in the park. If the animals return, authorities will need to capture and relocate them for safety reasons.
As a precaution, the public is urged not to feed, approach, or antagonize the otters in any way. Otters are protected under Schedule 2 of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 and are commonly found in rivers and lakes.

In an unusual twist, a woman recently managed to board a flight at KLIA without any identification, including a flight ticket, leading to a significant flight delay.
How Did The Woman Manage To Do So?

Over the weekend, Chinese travel blogger Zhu recounted an incident that occurred on August 29th at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). According to Zhu, her Xiamen Airlines flight to China was delayed by four hours due to a passenger boarding the plane without a ticket.
Zhu recalled that after settling into her seat, she noticed a woman wandering around the aircraft, disrupting other passengers who were trying to reach their seats and stow their belongings. Assuming the woman was simply having difficulty finding her seat, a flight attendant asked to see her boarding pass to provide assistance.
To their astonishment, the woman admitted she didn&rsquo;t have a ticket for the flight and, therefore, had no assigned seat. &ldquo;A few moments later, there was an announcement asking all passengers to disembark and return to the terminal for security checks,&rdquo; Zhu wrote. &ldquo;Everyone was understandably upset and wondered what was happening.&rdquo; Zhu added that airline staff had to re-check each passenger's boarding pass in alphabetical order before allowing them to board again.

In the comments section, the blogger noted that KLIA security questioned the passenger, who was notably without any luggage. This raised concerns about how she managed to bypass security, as all passengers are required to present their tickets before boarding.
It was speculated that the woman might have been a passenger from the previous flight, which was from Xiamen to Kuala Lumpur. The blogger mentioned that they had seen passengers from that flight disembark before they boarded, leading to the perplexing question of why the woman would remain on the plane and then attempt to fly back to Xiamen.
Following the incident, the flight eventually departed but faced a four-hour delay, arriving at Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport at 9:30 p.m. instead of the scheduled 6:55 p.m. Sin Chew Daily reported that Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) is investigating the matter, and there have been no further updates yet.
