These days, Malaysians are heavily engaged with social media, but this brings two key risks: addiction and falling for scams.
Recently, scammers have become increasingly crafty, and social media has become one of their favourite tools for tricking the public. With more people turning to platforms like TikTok for quick information instead of relying on Google, it's easy to be misled by seemingly legitimate but fake accounts.
In response, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has introduced licensing for social media apps, as part of their efforts to tackle both cyberbullying and online scams.

Beware Of Fake KWSP TikTok Account

In May, the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) introduced its latest feature: Account 3 (Fleksibel), which offers users a flexible withdrawal option with a daily limit of RM250. This option was available only through a one-time transfer from Account 2 to Account 3, which ended on August 31.
Since then, many Malaysians, particularly those feeling the strain of rising living costs, have been striving to manage their savings and withdraw funds from their EPF to help stabilize their finances. However, the misconception that withdrawals can be made at any time has made the EPF platform a prime target for scammers, who exploit this belief by luring unsuspecting victims with false promises of special withdrawals.

Recently, a TikTok account impersonating the EPF, using the username @kwspmalaysiaa, has emerged, misleading followers into believing it is genuine.
In contrast to the official EPF handle, @kwsp.malaysia, which boasts 98k followers, this fake account has attracted only 1,718 followers and posted three videos, one of which has already received over 590k views.
In its latest video, the fraudulent account promotes a so-called 'special EPF withdrawal' (Pengeluaran Khas) for members under 55, claiming that applications can be processed online from October 7 to 30, 2024.
The video encourages users to click a link in the bio, which leads to a deceptive website designed to mimic an application portal for Bantuan Tunai Rahmah 2024 payouts.

One notable aspect of the fake website is its clever use of 'Bantuan Melayu' in the URL, designed to deceive users into entering their personal information.
To avoid falling victim to such scams, always verify the legitimacy of the accounts and websites you interact with, especially regarding financial matters like your EPF account. Additionally, if you suspect a website may be fraudulent, it&rsquo;s crucial not to enter any personal details, as doing so can quickly give scammers access to your hard-earned money.

Malaysians Lose US$12.8b Annually To Scams Amid AI Threats

Malaysians lost US$12.8 billion (RM54 billion) to scams in a year, accounting for three per cent of the country's GDP, according to trust tech company Gogolook's State of Scam Report 2024. The report revealed that 70 per cent of scam victims did not report their cases, reflecting growing scepticism about the effectiveness of reporting processes.
AI-powered scams are on the rise, with 25 per cent of Malaysians unsure if AI was involved in their encounters. Scams like deepfakes and voice imitation have made detection more difficult. The report also found that 74 per cent of respondents faced scams at least once a month, with 43 per cent noting an increase in attempts. The average financial loss per victim was US$2,726, with only two per cent fully recovering their funds, down from eight per cent last year.
Gogolook COO Manwoo Joo emphasized the need for proactive fraud prevention using advanced tools like Whoscall to help Malaysians combat scams. The survey, conducted by GASA, Whoscall, and Feedzai, involved 1,202 Malaysians and highlighted the emotional and financial toll of fraud.

They argue that the government failed to conduct adequate research into the virus and the safety of vaccines, accusing them of pushing "toxic experimental vaccines" on the public. According to the plaintiffs, the government was reckless in accepting what they term the "false pandemic" narrative and enforced policies like the Movement Control Order (MCO) without proper investigation. Furthermore, they allege that full disclosure was not provided to the public regarding the risks associated with the vaccines.

Another plaintiff, the son of a woman who reportedly died from severe health complications after receiving a single dose of the vaccine, is also involved in the suit. These personal accounts have become central to the case, as they highlight the plaintiffs' belief that the vaccine caused lasting harm to their loved ones and themselves.

They also call for the cancellation of the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme, which they believe was imposed without adequate safety measures or informed consent.
Furthermore, the plaintiffs are demanding that the Malaysian government withdraw its membership from international organizations such as the WHO and the World Economic Forum (WEF), which they claim have conspired to undermine national sovereignty. On average, graduates reported spending anywhere from RM200 to RM1,500 on clothing, makeup, and photography. Interestingly, one woman revealed she didn&rsquo;t spend anything at all, as her expenses were fully sponsored by her partner.

The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) is reviewing the possibility of discontinuing loans for university programs with student repayment rates below a certain threshold, as part of efforts to improve loan recovery and foster a culture of repayment among graduates. According to PTPTN Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid, this approach aims to sustain the fund's financial support for future students by prioritizing programs with higher repayment performance.

In a webinar hosted by Khazanah Research Institute titled "Individual vs. Collective Interests: The Student Loan Conundrum," Ahmad Dasuki discussed PTPTN's collaboration with universities to encourage a loan repayment mindset among graduates. One strategy under consideration involves maintaining funding for programs where repayment rates exceed the target threshold, potentially holding back support for courses with lower repayment rates. Currently, PTPTN is considering setting a minimum repayment rate of either 30% or 50%, depending on further analysis and feedback from university partnerships.
"We want to work closely with institutions to instil a repayment habit among students," said Ahmad Dasuki. "By emphasizing loan repayments, we can ensure funds remain available for the next generation of students who need assistance." He also highlighted PTPTN&rsquo;s role in supporting academically qualified students in both public and private institutions.
RM74 Billion Disbursed, But Loan Recovery Remains A Challenge

Since its inception, PTPTN has disbursed RM74 billion in loans as of September, a figure underscoring the substantial financial support provided to Malaysian students. During a recent parliamentary session, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir disclosed that PTPTN has approved a total of 3,951,404 loans, amounting to RM71 billion, as of last year. Out of these, 72% of the loans went to Bumiputera students, while 28% supported non-Bumiputera students.
Balancing Individual Responsibility With Collective Support
The ongoing PTPTN initiative seeks to balance individual accountability for loan repayments with the broader objective of supporting higher education accessibility. Ahmad Dasuki emphasized the model's reliance on timely repayments from employed graduates, as this revenue cycle is essential to maintain the fund&rsquo;s viability for future students.
The proposed selective funding approach aims to shift focus toward programs with higher employment and repayment success rates, fostering a sustainable system that encourages students to view loan repayment as part of their financial responsibility.
