Kotex Malaysia recently wrapped up its two-month-long #SheCan Fund campaign, culminating in the award of RM105,000 to 11 young Malaysian women dedicated to breaking barriers in their respective fields. The campaign, part of Kotex&rsquo;s Limited Edition #SheCanPeriodt initiative, aimed to empower women to overcome societal stigmas and pursue their ambitions without constraints. The #SheCanPeriodt campaign also saw a refreshed Kotex Soft and Smooth pack design, celebrating women who are shattering glass ceilings and pushing boundaries in their communities.
According to Ms. Sarah Chen, Senior Brand Manager of Kotex Malaysia, the campaign is a call to action against outdated views of women. &ldquo;Even today, women continue to face significant barriers in pursuing their dreams and ambitions, including societal stigmas that unfairly label us as weaker due to our periods,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;With these insights, we initiated the #SheCanPeriodt campaign to challenge and dismantle these outdated perceptions.&rdquo; By combining this year&rsquo;s campaign with the #SheCan Fund initiative, Kotex aims to provide both encouragement and resources to Malaysian girls with dreams that challenge gender norms, inspire progress, and overcome discrimination. &ldquo;The message we want girls to take away from this is period or not, she can,&rdquo; Chen added.

Now in its fifth year, the #SheCan Fund saw over 300 applications, with 11 finalists chosen by a panel of judges for their remarkable vision. &ldquo;We received submissions across diverse fields&mdash;from athletes striving to represent Malaysia to activists, artists, and aspiring professionals in male-dominated sectors like tech, football, and hip-hop,&rdquo; Chen shared. The entries were impressive and spoke to the passion of young Malaysian women, prompting Kotex to add a &ldquo;wildcard&rdquo; recipient to the initial 10, bringing the total funding to RM105,000.
Panel Discussion Highlights the Importance of Support Systems
At the campaign&rsquo;s closing event, a panel discussion underscored the vital role of supportive communities in helping young women realize their ambitions. The panel featured Iman Troye, a rising star in Malaysian music; her mentors, music teachers Cikgu Johari bin Mohamad (Cikgu Joe) and Cikgu Fatin Najihah binti Fazi (Cikgu Fatin); Kotex #SheCanFund alumna Nur Adzratull Iffah; and Sarah Chen.

Reflecting on her journey, Iman shared how support from her mentors and family helped her discover her voice despite early setbacks. "My foray into music was when I first learned the piano at 9 years old. I wasn&rsquo;t a singer to begin with,&rdquo; Iman recalled. With the guidance of Cikgu Joe and Cikgu Fatin, she eventually began pursuing singing and competed in various events, overcoming criticisms along the way. &ldquo;Not everyone was supportive&hellip; there were many unkind comments thrown at me on social media saying I wasn&rsquo;t good enough,&rdquo; she shared. &ldquo;But even when times were tough, I knew that I had to stay strong and keep showing up for myself.&rdquo;
Cikgu Joe emphasized the importance of having a mentor, saying, "Our children need someone who believes in them and their dreams.&rdquo; He recounted how Iman initially lacked confidence in her abilities and how mentorship helped her grow in both skill and confidence. "As she grew and got better, we then focused on her choreography, timing, and connection with the audience&hellip; it is not just about talent alone,&rdquo; he noted.
Cikgu Fatin highlighted the need for emotional support, particularly in the face of setbacks like bullying. &ldquo;Beyond technical skills, it&rsquo;s about supporting them emotionally so they can keep going despite challenges,&rdquo; she said.
Nur Adzratull, a past #SheCan Fund recipient, shared how the fund enabled her to pursue her dream of teaching special needs students in Jakarta. &ldquo;For me, the Kotex #SheCan Fund was more than just financial aid - it gave me a sense of purpose,&rdquo; she explained, noting that it helped her make a meaningful difference among underprivileged communities and reaffirm her commitment to education.
The event concluded with a special live performance by Iman Troye of her song &ldquo;Mimpi Iman,&rdquo; which she composed for the campaign. Through its lyrics, the song aims to inspire young girls to rise above social stigmas and pursue their dreams with confidence.

Former Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has raised concerns over the proposed 40-70% hike in medical insurance premiums for 2025. According to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the projected 15% rise in medical costs is significantly lower than the proposed premium hikes. In his Facebook post, Guan Eng questioned why insurers are advocating such a substantial increase when global medical cost increases stand at just 10%, and the rise in the Asia-Pacific region is 11.1%.
Guan Eng argued that this excessive increase could place a heavy financial burden on Malaysians, many of whom are already grappling with the rising cost of living. He emphasized that these premium hikes, if approved, would disproportionately affect ordinary citizens, while life insurance companies continue to enjoy robust profits.

BNM&rsquo;s Accountability in Protecting the Public

Guan Eng criticized BNM and the Health Ministry (KKM) for their failure to protect the interests of 31 million Malaysians, emphasizing that the focus should be on safeguarding public health rather than the profits of life insurance and takaful companies. He posed three critical questions of public accountability:

Guan Eng highlighted that BNM had acknowledged the increased medical costs of 15% for 2025, while global and regional averages were significantly lower. However, life insurance companies are proposing hikes far above these figures, creating a disconnect between medical cost inflation and premium increases.

Guan Eng pointed to glaring examples of inflated medical expenses. For instance, a dengue patient using a guarantee letter (GL) incurs RM4,978, four times higher than the RM1,288 charged to those who pay upfront. Similarly, pneumonia patients using GL face RM6,859 in costs, compared to RM2,654 paid by those who opt to pay first. Guan Eng questioned why these pricing disparities continue to exist, despite BNM&rsquo;s role in regulating the sector.
He further highlighted BNM&rsquo;s regulatory shortcomings, arguing that insurers and private hospitals continue to take advantage of these GL arrangements, resulting in widespread abuse. This mismanagement of medical costs contributes to higher premiums, forcing the public to shoulder the financial burden.
Insurers&rsquo; Growing Profits vs Workers&rsquo; Stagnant Salaries
Guan Eng also pointed out the stark contrast between the rising premiums and stagnant wage growth. He noted that life insurance and family takaful funds reported profits of RM8.4 billion in the first half of 2024, more than double the RM3.2 billion reported in the same period of 2023. This surge in profits has not been accompanied by corresponding wage increases for the average Malaysian worker.
Guan Eng argued that there is no moral justification for insurers to demand premium hikes of 40-70% when workers&rsquo; incomes have remained relatively stagnant. He emphasized that without significant wage growth, Malaysians should not be expected to bear such steep premium increases, particularly when insurers are already enjoying substantial profits.

Guan Eng also warned that these premium hikes could contribute to higher inflation, further exacerbating the financial burden on Malaysian households. He emphasized that BNM&rsquo;s responsibility goes beyond protecting the interests of insurers&mdash;it must prioritize the well-being of the public.
Ultimately, Guan Eng stressed that Malaysians deserve a healthcare system where premium adjustments are fair, justifiable, and not solely driven by the profit motives of insurers.
In other developments, EPF has established the benchmark for basic retirement savings, suggesting that Malaysians will require at least RM1.3 million to afford a comfortable retirement. The graphic was intended to celebrate Malaysia&rsquo;s 2-1 victory over Indonesia in the World eSports Championships semi-finals. MESF condemned this incorrect representation, stating that it undermines professionalism and the integrity of international events.&nbsp; 
These repeated instances underscore the need for greater awareness and responsibility when it comes to respecting national symbols in all areas of competitive sports.

The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has unveiled its updated Retirement Income Adequacy (RIA) framework, setting new savings benchmarks to ensure Malaysians can achieve financial security in their retirement years. The revised benchmarks outline three tiers of retirement savings: RM390,000 for essential needs, RM650,000 for a comfortable standard of living, and RM1.3 million for a luxury lifestyle.
These benchmarks are based on a 20-year withdrawal plan, reflecting Malaysia&rsquo;s average life expectancy. EPF Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Zulqarnain Onn explained that the framework considers rising living costs and is supported by the Belanjawanku guide, a comprehensive resource estimating monthly expenses for a decent standard of living.
Monthly Withdrawal Benchmarks Over 20 Years:
Essential Tier (RM390,000):

These benchmarks will be reviewed every three years starting in 2029 to reflect inflation and updated cost-of-living data from the Belanjawanku guide.
Flexible Policies for Surplus Savings

In tandem with the new savings benchmarks, EPF has revised its withdrawal policies to provide members with greater flexibility in managing their retirement funds. The Members&rsquo; Investment Scheme (MIS) will allow members to transfer 30% of their savings above the basic benchmark into Akaun Persaraan, giving them the opportunity to invest and grow their funds.
For those with substantial savings exceeding RM1 million, withdrawals will align with the luxury tier benchmark of RM1.3 million. Starting in 2026, members with more than RM1.1 million in savings will be able to withdraw the surplus amount. The withdrawal threshold will increase by RM100,000 annually over three years, reaching RM1.3 million in 2028. This phased approach ensures members have the flexibility to manage surplus funds while adapting to the new benchmarks.
EPF has also raised the minimum retirement age benchmark from 55 to 60 years, reflecting the longer working lifespan and increased life expectancy of Malaysians. This adjustment aims to give members more time to build their savings while preparing for retirement.
The Belanjawanku Guide: A Foundation for Retirement Planning

A cornerstone of the RIA framework is the Belanjawanku guide, which serves as a detailed resource to help Malaysians estimate the minimum monthly expenses needed for a decent living standard. Initially developed for households in the Klang Valley, the guide now covers 11 additional major cities in Malaysia, providing a more comprehensive view of financial requirements across the country.
The guide was created in collaboration with the Social Wellbeing Research Centre (SWRC) at Universiti Malaya and is regularly updated to reflect changes in living costs. It forms the basis for the RIA framework, ensuring that Malaysians have a clear understanding of their financial needs as they plan for retirement.
EPF Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Zulqarnain Onn emphasized that the updated framework and guide are integral to EPF&rsquo;s mission of building a secure retirement future for Malaysians. &ldquo;The Belanjawanku guide helps average Malaysians navigate the challenges of managing household expenses, while the EPF establishes a strong foundation for adequate retirement savings,&rdquo; he said in a statement.
