Are you a fan of Trading Card Games (TCGs)? If you&rsquo;re active on social media, especially TikTok, you&rsquo;ve probably noticed the surge in buying, selling, and trading Pok&eacute;mon cards, with both new and classic editions gaining popularity&mdash;and significant market value.
However, with so much shifting online, finding a dedicated TCG shop in person can be a bit challenging. While they do exist, they&rsquo;re not as widely accessible as you might expect.
Fortunately, one Malaysian developer has made it easier for everyone to experience the TCG shop environment virtually with a new simulator game!
Meet The M&rsquo;sian Developer Behind &lsquo;TCG Card Shop Simulator&rsquo;

When &lsquo;TCG Card Shop Simulator&rsquo;, a new simulation game, achieved remarkable commercial success in September, few realized it was the work of a solo developer from Malaysia. It wasn&rsquo;t until independent developer Sia Ding Shen shared screenshots on Reddit&mdash;featuring the Malaysian Ringgit (RM) as a tribute to his heritage&mdash;that players recognized the game as proudly &lsquo;Buatan Malaysia&rsquo; (Made in Malaysia).
The game now holds an &lsquo;Overwhelmingly Positive&rsquo; rating on Steam, with 97% of its 20,826 reviews being favourable. In an interview, Sia, 33, shared insights into his development journey and his introduction to collectable card games (CCGs), or trading card games. His interest in titles like &lsquo;Magic: The Gathering&rsquo; and the &lsquo;Digimon Card Game&rsquo; was sparked by former colleagues, igniting a passion that would eventually inspire his game.

For those unfamiliar, TCGs can become quite expensive, and Ding Shen initially took a break from the hobby as the costs of collecting trading cards started to add up. However, he admitted that the desire to continue collecting never fully went away, which ultimately led to the creation of &rsquo;TCG Card Shop Simulator&rsquo;. The game allowed him to satisfy that craving at an affordable price.
How Was Sia&rsquo;s Journey In Game Development? 
Created by Sia&rsquo;s Selangor-based studio, OPNeon Games, &lsquo;TCG Card Shop Simulator&rsquo; launched on Steam on September 15.
The gameplay is straightforward: players take on the role of trading card shop owners, selling booster packs to earn profits and grow their own card shop empires.

In the game&rsquo;s fictional world, the collectable card game (CCG) centres around fantasy creatures known as Tetramons from the imaginary game &lsquo;Tetramon Duel Master&rsquo;.
&ldquo;As a kid, I loved playing video games and spent more hours gaming than studying,&rdquo; shares Sia, who uses the moniker OPNeon on Reddit.
At 15, he began teaching himself programming to create his own games, though he never imagined it could become a career. Over time, he developed a few games independently, but feeling unsatisfied with the in-game artwork, he decided to study digital animation at The One Academy to enhance his art skills.
During his studies, Sia paused his game development to focus on animation instead.
After graduating in 2012, Sia joined the Malaysian game development studio Passion Republic, an animator for AAA titles&mdash;high-profile, big-budget games&mdash;such as &lsquo;Elden Ring&rsquo;, &lsquo;Diablo IV&rsquo;, and &lsquo;The Last of Us Part II&rsquo;.
Around three years later, he transitioned into a technical artist role, focusing on rigging and scripting within the studio. This shift reignited his passion for game development, and he started creating his own games in his spare time.
&ldquo;I worked on mobile games solo, keeping the projects small to ensure I could finish them, with the goal of creating one game a year to stay motivated,&rdquo; he explained.

His first breakthrough was &lsquo;Sumiken&rsquo;, a mobile game inspired by traditional sumi-e (ink wash) painting and the critically acclaimed action-adventure game &lsquo;Okami&rsquo;, which was released in 2017.

Five years later, Sia completed &lsquo;Idle Card Shop Tycoon&rsquo;, a game that would eventually lay the groundwork for &lsquo;TCG Card Shop Simulator&rsquo;. The game quickly became a commercial hit, amassing over a million downloads to date. That was also the moment he decided to quit Passion Republic and shift focus to solo game development which is something he always wanted to do.
&ldquo;As a solo developer, I outsourced the game&rsquo;s artwork to different freelance artists and purchased game assets like 3D models, icons, music and sound effects from the Unity Asset Store. Everything else is done by myself,&rdquo; he said.
One of the toughest challenges in game development is understanding what players truly want; it&rsquo;s easy to invest time into features that might not actually resonate with them. That&rsquo;s why Sia opted to release the game in early access, enabling him to quickly gather feedback and make adjustments based on players&rsquo; preferences.
Though the game saw a successful early access launch, it faced some criticism for using AI-generated art for its collectible cards. In response, Sia took the feedback to heart, promptly working with artists to update the artwork and replace the images in question.

TCG Card Shop Sold A Million Over Copies After Its Launch

Since its launch, &lsquo;TCG Card Shop Simulator&rsquo; has sold over a million copies worldwide, according to Sia. The game&rsquo;s swift rise in popularity was partly fuelled by Hololive Production, one of the world&rsquo;s leading VTuber agencies, whose talents in Japan, Indonesia, and English-speaking regions began streaming it to their audiences.
&ldquo;I honestly didn&rsquo;t expect the game to gain this level of popularity,&rdquo; Sia shared. &ldquo;My initial goal was to sell 100,000 copies within a year, which I would have been thrilled with.&rdquo;
With the game&rsquo;s success far exceeding his expectations, Sia expressed gratitude for the support and feedback from players. Looking ahead, he plans to keep updating the game over the next year until it&rsquo;s fully complete.
When asked about expanding his team, Sia said he intends to continue working solo for now, appreciating the flexibility it gives him to focus fully on game development. An in-game roadmap on the main screen highlights the key features he plans to add in upcoming updates.

Insomniacks is a Malaysian pop-rock band that has rapidly emerged as one of the country's most beloved music acts, known for their emotionally charged lyrics, catchy melodies, and youthful energy. Formed in 2015, the band first gained attention by uploading cover songs on YouTube, showcasing their raw talent and chemistry. A teenage girl from Johor has gone missing under distressing circumstances, prompting urgent calls for <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/594197920784057/permalink/2826033707600456/">public assistance</a>. The 15-year-old, known as Yi Xuan, vanished from her home in Batu Pahat on the morning of 28 April. Her family fears she may have been abducted by a man who previously took her away without explanation.
Early Morning Disappearance Raises Alarm

Yi Xuan&rsquo;s disappearance was discovered by her grandparents, who had stepped out to buy breakfast for her that morning. When they returned, she was nowhere to be found. According to the family, Yi Xuan left the house at approximately 7am without informing anyone, wearing a yellow top and a blue denim skirt.
Her mother, Su Xingping (transliteration), reported that there had been no signs or arguments the day before that might have suggested Yi Xuan was planning to leave. The sudden nature of her disappearance has added to the family's anxiety, particularly given a troubling incident involving the same daughter just days earlier.
A Troubling Incident Just Days Before
On 23 April, five days before she went missing, Yi Xuan was unexpectedly picked up from school by an unfamiliar man. The family only found out through school authorities, who informed them that a Chinese man in a Proton Waja had collected her. The family had not authorised anyone to do so.
Fearing the worst, Su immediately lodged a police report. Fortunately, Yi Xuan returned home later that day unharmed &mdash; but refused to share where she had been taken or what had happened during her time away. The silence from the teenager left her family deeply unsettled.

The man believed to be connected to both incidents is known only by the nickname &ldquo;Ah Long.&rdquo; Su revealed that this individual had been introduced to the family by a friend of Yi Xuan&rsquo;s grandfather, but beyond that, very little is known about him.
&ldquo;He&rsquo;s in his 40s, but we don&rsquo;t have his real name, and we don&rsquo;t know what he does for a living. We hardly communicate with him. After the last time he picked up my daughter, I asked her what happened, but she just wouldn&rsquo;t say anything,&rdquo; said Su.
The family has no idea when &ldquo;Ah Long&rdquo; began contacting Yi Xuan or the nature of their relationship. The lack of transparency has only deepened fears that the teenager may have been manipulated or lured away.
Phones Switched Off and a Home Left Empty
After Yi Xuan&rsquo;s disappearance on 28 April, the family attempted to contact both her and &ldquo;Ah Long&rdquo; by phone. Neither responded, and both devices have remained switched off since. In desperation, Su went to &ldquo;Ah Long&rsquo;s&rdquo; known residence, only to find that the premises appeared abandoned.
&ldquo;My family and I have searched everywhere she usually goes &mdash; parks, caf&eacute;s, and hangouts she likes. We even received a tip that someone saw a girl matching her description in Yong Peng, and we rushed there, but so far we&rsquo;ve found nothing,&rdquo; said Su.
A Family Desperate for Answers
Yi Xuan&rsquo;s sudden silence, her connection to a mysterious older man, and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance have left her family deeply worried and emotionally drained. Her mother expressed frustration over the lack of leads and the fear that something sinister may have happened.
&ldquo;She didn&rsquo;t leave any messages. No clues. She just vanished,&rdquo; Su said, holding back tears. &ldquo;We are so afraid for her. If anyone has seen her or knows anything, we just want her home safe.&rdquo;
Police Reports Filed, Public Urged to Help
