Malaysia aims to rally support from Arab nations at an emergency summit next week to propose Israel's expulsion from the United Nations, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced to lawmakers, citing Israel's ongoing conflict in Gaza as a violation of international law and UN mandates. The conflict, which escalated in October last year following a Hamas attack that killed 1,200 people in Israel, has led to the deaths of more than 43,000 Palestinians, largely women and children, and resulted in widespread destruction across Gaza.
On Tuesday, Israel formally ended a longstanding cooperation agreement with the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), accusing it of infiltration by Hamas, a decision that has faced global condemnation for cutting off critical resources for Palestinians.
Malaysia, a majority-Muslim nation, has consistently condemned Israel&rsquo;s actions in Gaza. It has blocked the entry of Israeli shipping company Zim and has seen active boycotts of businesses perceived as connected to the US, Israel&rsquo;s primary ally and supplier of arms. Anwar, at the forefront of Malaysia's support for Palestine, reiterated the nation&rsquo;s commitment to the Palestinian cause, advocating for an independent Palestinian state free from what he described as Israel's &ldquo;dispossession, terrorism, cruelty, and genocide.&rdquo;

&ldquo;We are also studying [a proposal] &hellip; after the violation of laws, principles, and UN decisions, for Israel to be expelled as a member of the UN,&rdquo; Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced in a special parliamentary address on Monday.
Anwar intends to bring this measure forward at an emergency summit of the Arab League in Riyadh next Monday, where leaders are set to discuss Israel's actions in Gaza and expanding military operations in Lebanon. Last week, Saudi Arabia&rsquo;s foreign ministry stated that the Arab-Islamic summit would address Israel&rsquo;s continued &ldquo;crimes and violations&rdquo; in the region.
Huwaida Arraf, a Palestinian-American rights activist, noted that any proposal to suspend or expel a member state requires Security Council approval, which is difficult given that &ldquo;articles 5 and 6 [of the UN Charter] require Security Council approval,&rdquo; she posted on X. &ldquo;While it&rsquo;s clear that Israel is a persistent violator, both articles require Security Council approval, which is unlikely.&rdquo;
The U.S., holding veto power as a permanent Security Council member, has historically blocked resolutions critical of Israel, including those addressing the recent escalation in Gaza.

Anwar further stated, &ldquo;We will also discuss the development of an action plan and identify concrete steps toward achieving an independent Palestinian state within a clear and reasonable timeline.&rdquo;

Another question on many minds is how the United States will respond to this. Donald Trump has officially been declared the 47th President of the United States after defeating Kamala Harris with 295 Electoral votes, surpassing the 270 needed to win. Throughout his campaign, Trump promised to bring peace to the region, a goal that now appears to be an incredibly difficult task. In an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt in April, Trump stated, "Get it over with and let&rsquo;s get back to peace and stop killing people," referring to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Securing support may not be the biggest challenge for Malaysia, but getting the draft approved in the United Nations will certainly be a tough hurdle. Ultimately, the fate of the proposal rests with the Security Council. For now, all we can do is wait and watch as the situation continues to evolve.

A 23-year-old university student has raised concerns about an unexpected RM5 charge she encountered when collecting her renewed passport, which she had already paid for online. The incident occurred at the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) in Galleri@Kotaraya, Johor Bahru, on November 26.
The student, who wishes to remain anonymous, claimed that a female immigration officer handed her the passport and requested an additional RM5 payment. Unprepared for the charge, the student explained she didn&rsquo;t have cash on hand and was instructed to pay via a QR code. To her surprise, the transaction revealed that the money was directed to a personal bank account instead of an official government account.
"I was slightly dazed as I believed all payments were already settled online," the student said. She noted that she hadn&rsquo;t requested the plastic cover included with her passport and wasn&rsquo;t informed about the fee beforehand.
Although the RM5 amount was minimal, the student emphasized her stance against any misuse of power or malpractice, regardless of the sum involved.
Immigration Department Explains the RM5 Charge

Following the student's claims, Johor Immigration Department director Datuk Rusdi Mod Darus clarified the situation. He explained that the RM5 was a legitimate fee for the plastic protective cover provided with the passport.
According to Datuk Rusdi, a thorough internal investigation revealed no evidence of misconduct or integrity violations. He stated that the RM5 payment was correctly deposited into the Johor Immigration Sports Charity Club&rsquo;s official account, not a personal one.
However, the department acknowledged the confusion caused by the payment method. "To enhance transparency and public confidence, we will implement changes to our payment system. Moving forward, all payments related to club activities will be processed through an official account managed by the club," Datuk Rusdi said.

Born on April 1, 1938, in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, Ananda Krishnan's journey was one of constant innovation and resilience. A Harvard Business School alumnus, he reshaped Malaysia&rsquo;s media and communications landscape by launching Astro, which brought satellite television to millions, and Maxis, the country&rsquo;s largest mobile network provider.
