They must take &ldquo;reasonable steps&rdquo; to ensure under-16s cannot access their platforms. There will be no exceptions, even with parental consent, a point the Prime Minister was firm about.

Spain, for instance, passed a law in June banning social media use for those under 16, while Florida&rsquo;s new law will bar children under 14 from creating social media accounts starting in January. France introduced a policy in 2023 requiring social media companies to verify user age and parental consent for users under 15. China has taken the most stringent approach, limiting under-14s to just 40 minutes per day on Douyin, the Chinese equivalent of TikTok, while also capping online gaming time for minors.
In the US, TikTok is currently facing legal action over allegations of addiction and harmful features as it was argued that the app employs several features that are inherently addictive which leads to the endless scrolling capabilities, constant push notifications as well as beauty features that promote unrealistic appearances.

Australia&rsquo;s approach, with its rigorous requirements and no exceptions for parental consent, is set to become one of the world&rsquo;s most restrictive. With significant industry concerns and challenges around enforcement, only time will tell if Australia&rsquo;s pioneering policy will be effective or if it will spark further debates on the best way to safeguard young users on digital platforms.

Australia Moves To Ban Social Media Access For Children Under 16 With New Legislation

A 23-year-old university student has raised concerns about an unexpected RM5 charge she encountered when collecting her renewed passport, which she had already paid for online. The incident occurred at the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) in Galleri@Kotaraya, Johor Bahru, on November 26.
The student, who wishes to remain anonymous, claimed that a female immigration officer handed her the passport and requested an additional RM5 payment. Unprepared for the charge, the student explained she didn&rsquo;t have cash on hand and was instructed to pay via a QR code. To her surprise, the transaction revealed that the money was directed to a personal bank account instead of an official government account.
"I was slightly dazed as I believed all payments were already settled online," the student said. She noted that she hadn&rsquo;t requested the plastic cover included with her passport and wasn&rsquo;t informed about the fee beforehand.
Although the RM5 amount was minimal, the student emphasized her stance against any misuse of power or malpractice, regardless of the sum involved.
Immigration Department Explains the RM5 Charge

Following the student's claims, Johor Immigration Department director Datuk Rusdi Mod Darus clarified the situation. He explained that the RM5 was a legitimate fee for the plastic protective cover provided with the passport.
According to Datuk Rusdi, a thorough internal investigation revealed no evidence of misconduct or integrity violations. He stated that the RM5 payment was correctly deposited into the Johor Immigration Sports Charity Club&rsquo;s official account, not a personal one.
However, the department acknowledged the confusion caused by the payment method. "To enhance transparency and public confidence, we will implement changes to our payment system. Moving forward, all payments related to club activities will be processed through an official account managed by the club," Datuk Rusdi said.

One thing we can all agree is that no matter how some ideas may bring joy to one person, it&rsquo;s not often that netizens will agree with their ideas and with social media alone, it&rsquo;s also brought up the whole cancel movement which also involves the influencer getting mocked online.
Previously, influencer Andika Putera faced ridicule from M&rsquo;sians after expressing his fascination with the &lsquo;Old Money&rsquo; lifestyle and even creating his own &ldquo;Old Money Club.&rdquo; While his attempt gained significant attention online, it came at the expense of widespread backlash. Many criticized the effort, suggesting it clashed with his "aura," and urged others to have a reality check, pointing out the mismatch between their aspirations and financial realities.
