Sandra Lim, a 23-year-old actress, model, and martial artist from Selangor, has made history by becoming the first Malaysian to place in the semifinals of the Miss Universe pageant in over five decades. Competing against 130 delegates from across the globe, Lim earned a spot in the prestigious Top 30 during the 73rd Miss Universe competition held on 16 November in Mexico City.
The achievement marks a significant milestone for Malaysia, as the last time the country placed was in 1970, when Josephine Lena Wong reached the Top 15. Lim’s success has not only broken this long-standing streak but has also ignited a sense of national pride among Malaysians.
The Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation (MUMO) expressed its admiration in an Instagram post: “Congratulations, Sandra Lim! Your dedication and passion have inspired so many, and we are proud to call you our Queen who made history for our beautiful home.”
A Journey of Preparation, Dedication, and Heritage
Sandra Lim’s journey to the Miss Universe stage was nothing short of extraordinary. Crowned Miss Universe Malaysia in September, she embarked on an intensive two-month training regime to perfect her stage presence and refine her skills. Balancing her career as an actress and martial artist, Lim demonstrated remarkable dedication, having previously won a National Wushu gold medal at the age of 13 and securing first runner-up in an international pageant in 2022.
Her national costume, inspired by the Pahang folklore of Princess Walinong Sari, was a highlight of the competition. Designed by renowned Malaysian designer Ezuwan Ismail, the outfit celebrated Malaysian heritage with intricate detail and elegance. Lim further elevated her performance by incorporating a captivating Wushu routine, showcasing both cultural pride and her martial arts expertise.
“Watching her embody Princess Walinong Sari through her performance was the result of her hard work and dedication,” said Ezuwan Ismail.
Championing Inclusivity and Empowerment
This year’s Miss Universe competition embraced a more inclusive approach by removing age and marital status restrictions, allowing women from diverse backgrounds, including single mothers, to participate. Lim stood as a symbol of this progressive shift, inspiring a new generation to redefine beauty, strength, and capability.
Her humanitarian efforts also set her apart. As an ambassador for Shelter Home For Children, Lim has tirelessly advocated for education and opportunities for underprivileged and mistreated children, cementing her role as a role model both on and off the stage.
“We are immensely proud of Sandra for her outstanding performance on the global stage,” said Eleen Yong, National Director of MUMO. “Her dedication, grace, and intelligence have brought honour to Malaysia. We look forward to witnessing her continued success.”
