The Rise and Fall of Malaysia&rsquo;s Glamorous Power Couple
For years, Malaysian influencer-entrepreneur Vivy Yusof and her husband, Fadzarudin Shah Anuar, epitomized success and opulence in Kuala Lumpur&rsquo;s social media scene. Clad in luxury dUCk scarves&mdash;priced up to RM400&mdash;and steering their multimillion-ringgit clothing empire, the duo seemed unstoppable. However, on December 5, their illustrious facade shattered when they were charged with criminal breach of trust.

The couple is accused of embezzling RM8 million from their now-defunct online retailer, FashionValet. Despite receiving RM47 million in investments from state asset managers Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and Khazanah Nasional Berhad in 2018, the platform&rsquo;s losses amounted to millions. By 2023, these entities incurred a staggering RM43.9 million loss after selling their stakes for a mere RM3.1 million.
Public outrage quickly followed. TikToker FinancialFaiz lamented, &ldquo;How could you give RM47 million to a loss-making company? It&rsquo;s hard for ordinary Malaysians to earn RM100,000 a year, yet they received RM47 million.&rdquo; The case sparked broader questions about accountability and the gap between influencers&rsquo; perceived wealth and their financial responsibilities.
This case is a stark reminder of the growing scrutiny on influencer lifestyles, where the boundary between personal branding and financial recklessness is increasingly blurred.
Since then, she made her social media private to reduce public scrutiny.
&ldquo;On my birthday, I decided to do something unexpected&mdash;make my account private,&rdquo; she shared on Instagram.
Reflecting on her 20-year journey from blogging to building a brand and community, she acknowledged sharing much of her life online but expressed no regrets. &ldquo;This path has provided for my family and others, and for that, I am grateful,&rdquo; she added.
Bankruptcy and Lavish Lifestyles: Che Ta&rsquo;s Controversy

Actress Rozita Che Wan, popularly known as Che Ta, became another lightning rod for criticism. On December 10, government agency Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) raided her home, seizing items such as a car, furniture, and designer shoes over her failure to repay a nearly RM1 million business loan since 2017. The loan was intended to support Malays under Malaysia&rsquo;s affirmative action policy.
Mara&rsquo;s chairman, Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, emphasized their stance: &ldquo;Mara will not hesitate to take legal action if you&rsquo;re deliberately avoiding repayment while showcasing a luxurious lifestyle on social media. Every sen must be recovered for the benefit of others.&rdquo; Critics argue that the agencies themselves share blame for failing to perform adequate background checks before approving loans, often swayed by personal connections or public personas.
Che Ta&rsquo;s story has ignited debates about the ethics of using public funds and the responsibilities of borrowers who flaunt extravagant lifestyles while failing to meet financial obligations. Public trust in agencies like Mara depends on their ability to recover misused funds and prevent future cases of negligence.
The public auction of assets belonging to actress and entrepreneur Rozita Che Wan, originally scheduled for this morning (24 November), has been postponed, with a new date to be announced.
A lawyer representing Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), who requested anonymity, stated that the postponement was granted by the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court after Rozita, the defendant, filed an application to delay the process, as reported by Kosmo! Online.
&ldquo;Assalamualaikum, the court has postponed the public auction. A new date will be determined based on court orders,&rdquo; the lawyer said.
The auction was set to include 34 items belonging to Rozita, also known as Che Ta, valued at RM902,012.46. The list reportedly featured a Haval SUV, furniture, and household appliances such as a refrigerator, air conditioner, oven, microwave, washing machine, dryer, vacuum cleaner, and television.
The loan, co-signed by Rozita and her eldest son, Ammar Effendy, 28, allegedly remains unpaid, prompting Mara&rsquo;s legal division to initiate bankruptcy proceedings against both parties. The agency has clarified that the auction is a last-resort measure following repeated unsuccessful attempts to recover the outstanding debt.
The Taxman Watches: Crackdown on Financial Misconduct

Authorities are intensifying scrutiny of influencers. The Inland Revenue Board has established state units to monitor social media personalities, ensuring taxes are paid. This comes as more prominent figures face allegations of financial mismanagement.
Cosmetics mogul Hasmiza Othman, widely known as Datuk Seri Vida, faced her own scandal in November. Items worth RM1.06 million were seized to settle unpaid debts to a contractor. The flamboyant entrepreneur, famous for her first-class travels and extravagant posts, assured followers she was addressing the issue legally.
&ldquo;I take this matter seriously and will give my full attention to the issues raised,&rdquo; she wrote on Instagram, while appointing legal representation. Fellow influencer Che Ta commented in solidarity, &ldquo;May everything be made easy and smooth, Dato Seri.&rdquo; However, these interactions did little to quell the growing public perception of irresponsibility among high-profile personalities.

While she is currently overseas, no further reports on the contractor issue has surfaced and we have yet to see updates from her.

The chasm between influencers&rsquo; flashy lifestyles and their actual financial woes raises alarms. Millions of followers admire figures like Che Ta, Datuk Seri Vida, and Vivy Yusof, who collectively have millions of Instagram followers. However, recent revelations suggest their wealth often hinges on borrowed funds, leading to a troubling cycle of debt and deception.
Dr. Joel Low, president of the Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychology, warned, &ldquo;Some people will go to great lengths, including incurring bad debt, to mimic these lifestyles. This can lead to depression and social anxiety when they can&rsquo;t keep up.&rdquo; He added that the constant exposure to unattainable lifestyles can distort financial priorities, pushing followers to make reckless decisions.
Fans often feel betrayed upon learning their idols&rsquo; lives were built on shaky foundations. &ldquo;These influencers create an illusion of perfection, but the recent scandals reveal that it&rsquo;s often smoke and mirrors,&rdquo; said a disillusioned follower.
Social Media&rsquo;s Role in Reinforcing Unrealistic Expectations
The role of social media platforms in amplifying these issues cannot be overlooked. The constant stream of curated posts showcasing luxury vacations, designer outfits, and expensive experiences sets a standard many cannot meet. This feeds into a culture of comparison, where users feel pressure to emulate the lifestyles they see online.
At the same time, influencers themselves are under immense pressure to maintain their brand image, often pushing them further into financial risk. The result is a toxic cycle of overspending, borrowing, and public scrutiny when the facade crumbles.

Prominent voices within the influencer community are calling for change. Celebrity entrepreneur Aliff Syukri criticized the trend, stating, &ldquo;Many influencers live lavishly while deeply in debt. This doesn&rsquo;t just harm them but also the lenders who trusted them.&rdquo;
Experts and policymakers agree that more stringent measures are needed to hold influencers accountable for financial mismanagement. This includes thorough vetting processes for public funds, stricter tax enforcement, and greater transparency in personal branding practices.
The scandals surrounding Malaysia&rsquo;s influencers highlight a pressing need for greater financial accountability and transparency. As authorities ramp up efforts to hold public figures responsible, the question remains: Will this signal a shift toward authenticity, or will the illusion of luxury continue to overshadow reality? The answer may determine the future of Malaysia&rsquo;s influencer culture.
