Starting January 1, 2025, students enrolled in Malaysian public universities and other government-supported institutions will receive a significant boost in financial aid for domestic travel. The government has increased the FLYsiswa flight subsidy from RM300 to RM400 per student, aiming to make air travel more affordable for those travelling between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the Flysiswa 2024 Carnival at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Shah Alam. Speaking to students, Anwar emphasized the importance of the initiative in lightening the financial burdens associated with returning home for semester breaks or during festive seasons.

&ldquo;This increase reflects the government&rsquo;s commitment to easing the burden of students, especially those travelling to their home states in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan. We want to ensure that every student has the opportunity to focus on their education without being overwhelmed by travel costs,&rdquo; said Anwar.
The Prime Minister&rsquo;s announcement aligns with the government&rsquo;s broader commitment to supporting students from all corners of Malaysia, reinforcing a promise to create an inclusive education system.
Also in attendance were Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir, and UiTM Vice Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr. Shahrin Sahib, who lauded the initiative as a vital step forward in addressing the rising costs of domestic air travel.
What Is FLYSiswa?

Launched in 2023, the FLYsiswa program provides subsidies to students travelling on domestic flights between their home states and their study locations. This program primarily targets students whose permanent addresses are in Sabah, Sarawak, or Labuan and who are pursuing their studies in Peninsular Malaysia, as well as those from the peninsula studying in East Malaysia. It also applies to inter-state travel within East Malaysia.
The initiative covers students from various government-recognized institutions, including public universities, polytechnics, community colleges, teacher training institutes (IPG), and matriculation colleges. The subsidy is expected to benefit more than 74,500 students across the country in 2025, with the government allocating RM24 million to support the initiative. Since its inception, over 73% of eligible students have taken advantage of the program, with 37,551 benefiting in 2023 and 36,949 redeeming their vouchers this year.

The increase in subsidy from RM300 to RM400 per student marks a significant milestone in the program&rsquo;s development. The new subsidy will cover economy-class tickets on approved airlines, including Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Batik Air, MASwings, and FireFly.
Eligibility and Application Process
Eligibility: The subsidy is available to Malaysian citizens studying at eligible institutions:

<li>Matriculation Colleges and Teacher Education Institutes (IPG) under the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM)</li>
</ul>
To qualify, students must meet one of these criteria:

<li>Originating from Sabah, Sarawak, or the Federal Territory of Labuan and studying in Peninsular Malaysia.</li>

</ul>
Application: Eligible students can apply for the RM400 flight subsidy through the official airline websites. Once approved, they will receive a digital voucher credited to their account, which can be used to book economy-class flights on participating airlines. If the ticket cost is less than RM400, the remaining amount will remain as a credit for future bookings.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has postponed the scheduled cabinet vote on a ceasefire deal intended to halt the ongoing war in Gaza. The delay, which occurred just before a key meeting was set to take place on Thursday, has raised concerns about lingering disagreements that could potentially derail the hard-won truce. Netanyahu accused Hamas of trying to extract last-minute concessions before agreeing to the terms, which were finalised after months of mediation.
US Confidence in Ceasefire Despite Setback

Despite the delay, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed confidence that the ceasefire, which had been brokered by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt, would still come into effect as planned on Sunday. Blinken acknowledged that there had been "loose ends" to address, but he reassured the public that these issues were being resolved and that the ceasefire would begin without further complications. "It's not surprising that in a process as challenging as this one, we&rsquo;re tying up that loose end," Blinken stated during a press conference in Washington.
Although the ceasefire was agreed upon in principle by Israeli negotiators, it requires formal approval by the Israeli security cabinet before it can be implemented. The U.S. remains optimistic that the deal will be ratified in the coming days despite the delays.
Continued Strikes and Tensions in Gaza

As Israel and Hamas work through the final details of the agreement, fighting in Gaza has continued unabated. Following the announcement of the ceasefire deal on Wednesday, Israeli airstrikes intensified, killing at least 86 people, according to Palestinian health officials. These strikes, which have targeted several locations across Gaza, have added to the mounting death toll, with more than 46,000 Palestinians reported killed since the start of the conflict.
On the ground in Gaza, a mix of anger and disbelief has spread among civilians as they continue to face the devastating impact of the ongoing military operations. For some, the announcement of the ceasefire has brought little relief, as their homes and lives are shattered by the relentless bombing.
Hamas' Conditions and the Disputed Prisoner List

The main point of contention between Israel and Hamas lies in the list of Palestinian prisoners to be released as part of the deal. Israeli negotiators have resisted these demands, particularly over the inclusion of individuals viewed by Israel as "symbols of terror."
The first phase of the ceasefire agreement, which is set to last for six weeks, will see the release of 33 hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. In addition, Israeli forces are expected to pull back from densely populated areas of Gaza, and displaced Palestinians will be allowed to return home. Humanitarian aid will also flow into Gaza, with hundreds of trucks expected to deliver vital supplies.
The delay has also highlighted divisions within Israel&rsquo;s government. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a hardline figure in Netanyahu&rsquo;s coalition, has threatened to resign if the ceasefire deal goes through. He labelled the agreement as "reckless" and argued that it would undo the achievements of Israel&rsquo;s military campaign. Despite this, a majority of Israeli ministers are expected to back the deal, and the cabinet is likely to vote on it by Friday or Saturday.

Who Is ENERGY?

Energy is a Taiwanese boy band that made its debut on July 12, 2002. The group consist of five members: leader Milk (Yeh Nai Wen), lead vocalist Edy (Hsiao Ching Hung), rapper and main dancer Toro (Kuo Wei Yun), vocalist and dancer KunDa (Hsieh Kun Da), and lead singer Shuwei (Chang Shu Wei). Energy quickly gained attention for their unique Rapcore sound, a blend of rap and rock elements that was relatively uncommon in the Mandopop scene at the time.
