i-City Shah Alam recently unveiled its latest attraction, SkyCity Theme Park, featuring an impressive 600-metre-long water slide towering 60 metres above the ground. During the day, visitors could enjoy a breathtaking 360&deg; panoramic view, while at night, the slide transformed into a vibrant spectacle, illuminated by colourful LED lights, creating a thrilling and immersive experience.

However, it looks like the SkyCity Theme Park at i-City, Shah Alam, has been ordered to cease operations indefinitely following a serious safety incident and multiple violations of local regulations. The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), together with law enforcement, carried out a site inspection on January 31, which led to the immediate shutdown of the theme park&rsquo;s glass water slide attraction.
This decision follows a viral incident where an inflatable float detached from the slide and fell onto a visitor, raising concerns about the attraction&rsquo;s safety and operational legitimacy. Investigations have since revealed that the theme park had ignored stop-work orders and operated without full approvals, prompting swift action from the authorities.
MBSA Takes Action: Continuous Monitoring in Place

MBSA has confirmed that it is actively monitoring the site to ensure that Sky City Theme Park does not resume operations until it meets all necessary safety and licensing requirements.
In an official statement, MBSA stated:
&ldquo;The closure was enforced after a site visit by MBSA&rsquo;s top management, led by Acting Deputy Mayor Madiyan Baweh, MBSA councillor Maizan Abdul Majid, and the police on January 31 at 5:30 PM. The i-City management has been instructed to immediately halt Sky City&rsquo;s operations, and MBSA will continue strict monitoring.&rdquo;
In response to the controversy, Tourism Selangor has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all tourism attractions in the state comply with strict safety and operational standards.
&ldquo;The safety of visitors remains a top priority in Selangor&rsquo;s tourism industry. Tourism Selangor acknowledges the incident at Sky City Theme Park and will ensure that proper actions are taken to guarantee the well-being of tourists,&rdquo; the organisation stated.
Tourism Selangor has also urged visitors to check for licensed attractions through its official website, VisitSelangor2025.my, and its social media channels (@TourismSelangor) before planning trips to theme parks or entertainment venues.
The Incident: Inflatable Float Falls from the Slide, Injuring a Visitor

The controversy erupted after an incident on January 29, when an inflatable float fell from the glass water slide and struck a woman on the ground. The victim, a local woman in her 20s, suffered injuries and was treated at a polyclinic in Seksyen 16.
A 13-second video capturing the incident quickly went viral on social media, sparking public outrage and scrutiny.
Interestingly, TikTok users later clarified that the float was not carrying a passenger at the time. Instead, it had fallen from a conveyor belt system that was meant to transport the floats back to the slide&rsquo;s starting point.
Despite this clarification, the incident still raised serious concerns about the safety measures in place at the attraction.
MBSA&rsquo;s Stop-Work Orders Ignored for Months
Following the incident, investigations revealed that Sky City Theme Park had been operating without proper approvals and had ignored multiple stop-work orders from MBSA.

<li>November 14, 2024 &ndash; MBSA issued a fine to i-City&rsquo;s management for constructing the glass water slide without written approval.</li>
<li>January 18, 2025 &ndash; Despite the fine and stop-work notice, i-City proceeded with the attraction&rsquo;s grand opening.</li>
<li>January 29, 2025 &ndash; The accident occurred, leading to public outcry.</li>
<li>January 31, 2025 &ndash; MBSA and the police inspected the site and ordered an immediate shutdown.</li>
</ul>
MBSA&rsquo;s Head of Corporate and Public Relations, Mohd Azhar Mohd Sharif, stated:
&ldquo;This attraction was never approved for operation. i-City was required to submit a planning application and a temporary operating permit, but they failed to do so. They were compounded for non-compliance, yet they continued operations.&rdquo;
Authorities have stressed that failure to comply with safety regulations could lead to heavier penalties and legal action against the theme park&rsquo;s management.
Sky City&rsquo;s Response: Refunds and Ticket Exchanges for Visitors

Following the widespread backlash, Sky City&rsquo;s management has offered refunds and ticket exchanges for visitors affected by the closure.
&ldquo;The Sky i-City ride is currently closed, but we are working hard to resume operations as soon as possible,&rdquo; a Sky i-City spokesperson stated.
Customers who purchased tickets for the glass water slide have been given two options:

<li>Exchange tickets for other attractions at i-City.</li>
<li>Request a full refund by contacting Sky City&rsquo;s customer service at 03-55218800.</li>
</ol>
However, the management has not disclosed when they expect the attraction to reopen or if they intend to comply with MBSA&rsquo;s safety regulations moving forward.
Menteri Besar Calls for Further Discussions

Selangor Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, has announced that he will summon i-City&rsquo;s management for a meeting to discuss the ongoing controversy and ensure that no further violations occur.
Ironically, in August 2024, Amirudin had officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for Sky City, promoting the glass water slide as a landmark attraction for the Visit Selangor 2025 campaign. The project was expected to draw five million visitors annually, boosting tourism in Shah Alam.
However, the grand opening, initially scheduled for December, was delayed until January 2025, possibly due to regulatory issues that MBSA had flagged earlier.
Legal Implications: Possible Charges Against i-City
Shah Alam district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim confirmed that the police received an official report regarding the accident and are investigating the theme park&rsquo;s operations.
&ldquo;The case is being investigated under Section 6 of the Selangor Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment 1995, which prohibits operating without a valid license,&rdquo; he stated.
If i-City is found guilty, it could face further penalties, including fines, prolonged suspension, or legal action.
The Bigger Picture: Safety and Accountability in the Tourism Industry
The Sky City Theme Park controversy highlights serious concerns about safety standards and regulatory compliance in Malaysia&rsquo;s tourism and entertainment sector. It raises important questions:
