Scammers have become increasingly sophisticated, using various tactics to trick unsuspecting victims into handing over their money or personal information. However, one Malaysian entrepreneur has decided to turn the tables on them by creating an AI-powered chatbot that wastes scammers&rsquo; time and prevents them from targeting real people.
Introducing Scammers On Hold AI (SOHAI)&mdash;a chatbot designed to engage scammers in endless, nonsensical conversations, keeping them distracted and frustrated for as long as possible.
A Clever Tool in the Fight Against Scammers

SOHAI was developed by Dylan Tan, the founder and CEO of Replyr.ai, a company that specialises in AI-powered chatbot solutions for businesses. Unlike traditional scam prevention tools that focus on warnings or detection, SOHAI takes a more proactive approach by actively engaging scammers, leading them into confusing and pointless discussions that waste their time.
Tan introduced SOHAI in the Entrepreneurs and Startups in Malaysia Facebook group as well as LinkedIn, explaining that the chatbot serves as a time-wasting distraction for scammers, ensuring they spend less time targeting actual victims.
&ldquo;Every minute a scammer spends talking to SOHAI is a minute they are not scamming someone else,&rdquo; Tan stated.
How SOHAI Works

SOHAI operates entirely through WhatsApp, where it assumes the identity of a fictional character named "Madam Soh". Whenever a scammer contacts the chatbot, SOHAI responds with a mix of random excuses, vague statements, and confusing replies designed to keep the conversation going.
<ol>
<li>If a scammer contacts you, simply give them SOHAI&rsquo;s phone number.</li>
<li>The chatbot will take over the conversation, sending frustrating and time-consuming responses.</li>
<li>If the scammer stops replying, SOHAI will follow up to further pester them.</li>
</ol>
What makes SOHAI even more effective is its ability to communicate in multiple languages, including English, Malay, and Mandarin, allowing it to adapt to different scammers' preferred languages.

Additionally, every conversation is logged and stored in a publicly accessible <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1la3fz_W936LoeBe06QQ8YG5hsJ_tY7Tj3jK9iPzeXAU/edit?usp=sharing">Google Sheets</a> leaderboard. This leaderboard records:

<li>Key chat highlights</li>
<li>Tactics used by both the scammer and SOHAI</li>
</ul>
This not only allows users to track how much time is being wasted but also provides insight into common scam tactics. One thing to note is Tan had remarked that certain columns on the sheet had been hidden as they contained personal information after the chatbot had received such an overwhelming response from netizens.
Built in Just a Few Days
Tan revealed that creating SOHAI took only two to three days, thanks to the existing AI chatbot infrastructure used by Replyr.ai.

&ldquo;I used the same system we deploy to automate conversations for real businesses. Since the core system was already in place, adapting it for SOHAI was straightforward,&rdquo; he explained.
When asked about his motivation, Tan expressed his frustration with scammers and their predatory tactics.
&ldquo;I hate scammers because they prey on vulnerable people&mdash;especially the elderly and those who may not be as tech-savvy. Almost everyone knows someone who has fallen victim to a scam," he said. Tan also pointed out that most scammers are not as technologically advanced as many people assume.
&ldquo;They still rely on human effort and don&rsquo;t use AI themselves. They don&rsquo;t even share intelligence with each other. That&rsquo;s why every minute they spend chatting with SOHAI is a minute wasted on their end.&rdquo;
Future Plans for SOHAI
Tan has ambitious plans to expand SOHAI&rsquo;s capabilities, making it even more frustrating for scammers to deal with. Some of the upcoming features include:

<li>Sending fake files&mdash;such as documents that appear to contain important information but cannot be opened.</li>
<li>Generating fake transaction receipts&mdash;to mislead scammers who attempt to trick people into making payments.</li>
<li>Introducing more conversational tactics&mdash;to keep scammers engaged for even longer periods.</li>
<li>Constantly changing phone numbers&mdash;so that scammers cannot block the chatbot and continue their activities elsewhere.</li>
</ul>
Tan believes that as more people start using SOHAI, the collective frustration for scammers will increase, making it harder for them to succeed in their fraudulent schemes.

On WhatsApp, scammers will see the chatbot as "Madam Soh", which further adds to their confusion.
To ensure the effectiveness of SOHAI, Tan has also prepared additional phone numbers in case scammers start blocking the chatbot. This ensures that the scam-busting efforts can continue without interruption.
