Six former cadets of the National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM), previously sentenced to death for the killing of Naval Cadet Officer Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain, will now serve 18 years in prison. Court&rsquo;s Rationale for Overturning the Death Penalty

The Federal Court determined that the prosecution could not conclusively prove the murder charge under Section 300(c) of the Penal Code. Instead, the court upheld a conviction for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304(a), which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a fine if the act was committed with intent to cause death.
Delivering the verdict, Datuk Seri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim stated that while the six men were responsible for Zulfarhan Osman&rsquo;s death, the evidence did not support a charge of premeditated murder. As a result, the court reinstated their original 18-year sentence, backdated to their arrest on 1 June 2017.

The six former cadets&mdash;Muhammad Akmal Zuhairi Azmal, Muhammad Azamuddin Mad Sofi, Muhammad Najib Mohd Razi, Muhammad Afif Najmudin Azahat, Mohamad Shobirin Sabri, and Abdoul Hakeem Mohd Ali&mdash;were found guilty of causing Zulfarhan Osman&rsquo;s death at the Jebat Hostel Block, UPNM, between 4:45 am and 5:45 am on 22 May 2017. The victim succumbed to his injuries at Serdang Hospital on 1 June 2017.
Initially, five of the accused were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries a mandatory death sentence. The sixth accused, Abdoul Hakeem, was charged under Section 109 for abetting the crime, carrying the same penalty. The High Court later reduced the charge to Section 304(a), resulting in the 18-year prison sentence.
In 2023, the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the prosecution&rsquo;s cross-appeal, reinstating the murder charges and sentencing all six to death. However, the Federal Court&rsquo;s latest ruling has reverted the case to the 2021 High Court decision.
Potential for Early Release

The six former cadets, now aged 29, have already served eight years of their sentence. Under Malaysia&rsquo;s prison system, inmates may be eligible for early release after serving two-thirds of their sentence, provided they demonstrate good behaviour. This means they could be released in approximately four years.
Defence lawyer Datuk Seri M. Ramachelvam, representing Muhammad Afif Najmudin Azahat, confirmed that his client is looking forward to a fresh start after completing his sentence. &ldquo;This has been a painful lesson for him. His parents have apologised to the victim&rsquo;s family, as there was never any intent to cause death,&rdquo; he stated.
Lawyer Amer Hamzah Arshad, who represents two of the accused, emphasised that there are no winners in this case. &ldquo;Zulfarhan has lost his life, and these young men have lost their future. They have paid the price for their actions and must now move forward,&rdquo; he remarked.
Involvement of Other Individuals
In addition to the six convicted cadets, 12 others were charged under Section 330 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt to extract a confession from the deceased. These individuals were originally sentenced to three years in prison in 2021, but their sentences were extended to four years by the Court of Appeal in 2023.

The tragic discovery of a 39-year-old schoolteacher&rsquo;s decomposed body in her Johor home has sparked widespread concern and prompted authorities to issue a public appeal for assistance in tracing her only known living relative. The woman, who had been absent from work since September last year, is believed to have died alone nearly a month prior to the discovery of her remains.
Alarming Smell Leads to Grim Discovery

Responding officers forced entry into the premises, where they were met with a harrowing scene: the lifeless, heavily decomposed body of a woman&mdash;later identified as Lo Kwan Fong, also known as Luo Qunfeng (transliteration)&mdash;was found inside the house.
According to Assistant Commissioner M. Kumarasan, the Iskandar Puteri District Police Chief, the victim is believed to have died about a month earlier. Early observations ruled out any signs of a struggle or forced entry.
No Foul Play Suspected, But Autopsy Inconclusive

A post-mortem examination was carried out at Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) in Johor Bahru by forensic specialists. The body had reportedly deteriorated to such an extent that internal indicators were no longer viable for a conclusive assessment.
&ldquo;The autopsy could not ascertain the cause of death. However, there were no signs of criminal activity, and we have classified this as a case of sudden death,&rdquo; said ACP Kumarasan.
This classification rules out foul play for now, though police have not entirely closed the file, pending any new leads or forensic insights.
Months of Absence and Increasing Isolation

Lo, a teacher at a school in Taman Tunku Aminah, had not reported for work since 24 September 2024. In February 2025, her colleagues paid her a visit at home. It was the last confirmed contact anyone had with her. Subsequent efforts to reach her, including further home visits and attempts to call, went unanswered. Neighbours also noted that they had not seen her in a long time, but it wasn&rsquo;t until the strong odour began to spread that authorities were contacted.
She led a quiet, solitary life. According to her colleagues, she was reserved and rarely spoke about her personal affairs. She had reportedly lost both parents before 2010, and it was believed she had no siblings. She never married and had no children.
The only relative she had ever mentioned was her maternal aunt, who had moved to Singapore many years ago. This aunt, now estimated to be around 74 years old, is presumed to be her only surviving family member. However, no direct contact information for the aunt is known, making the search more difficult.
Her colleagues, heartbroken by the manner in which she passed, have since appealed for public assistance in finding this relative so that Lo can be laid to rest by family, not strangers.
Funeral Plans On Hold As Search for Kin Continues

A disturbing incident in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, has ignited widespread outrage after a university student was allegedly caught recording upskirt videos of women using a mobile phone hidden in a shopping bag. Fearing that the man could evade serious consequences or return to campus under false pretences, the students decided to publicly share their experience and the video of the confrontation. &ldquo;We don&rsquo;t want this person to tell people he was arrested for gambling and just carry on as if nothing happened,&rdquo; said one of the students involved.
Motivated by Justice, Not Fame
The video quickly went viral, with many praising the students for their courage and initiative. However, the individuals behind the video were quick to clarify their motivations. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re not doing this for attention or praise. We just want to make sure he doesn&rsquo;t get away with it&mdash;and that women are warned,&rdquo; said the victim&rsquo;s friend in a statement.

Students Confront Suspected Voyeur In Bukit Bintang: 500GB Of Upskirt Videos Found

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have come under the spotlight once again following the circulation of a video featuring one of its officers allegedly engaging in inappropriate behaviour. The footage, lasting just over two minutes, shows a lower-ranking officer involved in a lewd conversation with a woman, during which he is heard inviting her either to his house or to a hotel. The video was widely shared on social media, drawing public criticism and raising questions over professional conduct within the force.
According to PDRM, the incident is believed to have taken place in the Ampang Jaya district of Selangor. In response, a disciplinary and criminal investigation has been launched against the officer.
Official Statements and Immediate Response

Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad, Director of PDRM&rsquo;s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS), confirmed that the department is actively investigating the case from both disciplinary and supervisory standpoints. He stated that stern action would be taken if the officer&rsquo;s behaviour was found to have violated the law or internal regulations. The department is also reviewing the role of the officer&rsquo;s superiors in overseeing his conduct.
Azri stressed that the police will not tolerate misconduct among its ranks and reminded all officers that they are accountable not just to their superiors, but also to the public they serve.
Separately, Ampang Jaya District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail revealed that the officer in question has already been temporarily relieved of his duties pending the outcome of the investigation.

The officer is now being investigated under two key laws. The first is Section 509 of the Penal Code, which deals with words or gestures intended to insult a person&rsquo;s modesty. The second is Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which addresses the misuse of network facilities or services to transmit offensive or indecent content.
In tandem with the criminal investigation, an internal disciplinary process is being carried out to assess breaches of the police code of conduct.
Public Urged to Assist in the Investigation

Integrity Issues Plague PDRM Amid Officer Misconduct Scandal

The recent viral misconduct case is just the tip of the iceberg for the PDRM, as broader concerns about internal discipline and professionalism continue to mount. Between January and May 2025, 492 officers were subjected to disciplinary action, with 59 dismissed and 146 suspended, according to Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad, Director of PDRM&rsquo;s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS).
The most common offences were integrity-related violations (333 cases), followed by governance issues (45), drug offences (42), criminal acts (38), syariah breaches (19), and corruption (15). The figures were revealed during Azri&rsquo;s visit to the newly officiated Maran District Police Headquarters, which serves over 115,000 residents.
Public complaints about police misconduct also surged, with 2,637 reports filed in just five months&mdash;1,892 formal complaints and 745 public tips. In response, PDRM launched the Aduan JIPS PDRM app, offering a more transparent platform for the public to report wrongdoing.
End of a Career and a Call for Reform
Azri&rsquo;s remarks came as part of his final tour of duty, with his retirement scheduled for 26 June 2025, marking the end of a 37-year career in the police service. His departure comes at a pivotal moment, as PDRM faces mounting pressure to reform and rebuild trust with the public.
While the current case may involve a single officer, it has highlighted systemic concerns around supervision, discipline, and the need for continued vigilance against abuses of power.

PDRM Officer Under Investigation After Inappropriate Remarks Caught In Viral Video

In a striking example of how appearances can be deceiving, two luxury car drivers were recently caught by the Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) for driving without valid road tax and insurance. Despite being behind the wheel of a BMW X5 and a Ford Mustang, both drivers claimed they were unable to renew their documents due to financial hardship.
The enforcement operation, Ops Harian, was held on Thursday, 12 June 2025, along the Kajang&ndash;Cheras Expressway, and ran from 2pm to 11pm. The two high-end vehicles were stopped during routine checks, and further inspection revealed they were in breach of road regulations.
Excuses Don&rsquo;t Match the Lifestyle: &ldquo;We Couldn&rsquo;t Afford It&rdquo;

According to Selangor JPJ Director Azrin Borhan, the Ford Mustang, driven by a man in his early 30s, was flagged for not having a valid Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM) or insurance. The driver claimed he was unable to renew his road tax due to being blacklisted as a result of multiple outstanding traffic summonses.
The driver of the BMW X5, a man in his 40s, was found to be in even more serious violation &mdash; his vehicle had been driven with an expired road tax for more than a year and without any valid insurance coverage. When asked for an explanation, he too cited financial difficulties as the reason.
Both men stated that although they could afford to purchase luxury cars, they were struggling to maintain legal compliance with basic motoring requirements, such as road tax and insurance.
JPJ: &ldquo;Owning a Luxury Car Does Not Make You Above the Law&rdquo;

In response to the violations, both vehicles were immediately seized and taken to the JPJ Shah Alam branch for further investigation and enforcement action.
Azrin Borhan delivered a strong message to the public:
&ldquo;Driving an expensive vehicle is not a licence to break the law. Regardless of income or status, all road users must follow the same regulations. There will be no exceptions for those who own luxury cars.&rdquo;
He also stressed that stern action would be taken against individuals who are found to be negligent or who intentionally ignore their responsibilities as drivers.
A Recurring Issue: Expensive Cars, Missing Paperwork

According to JPJ, many such offenders prioritise luxury aesthetics and brand image over legal compliance and safety obligations &mdash; often at the cost of other road users.
The two vehicles involved in this latest case &mdash; a Ford Mustang and a BMW X5 &mdash; are each worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit in the Malaysian market. The discrepancy between such valuable assets and the drivers&rsquo; claimed inability to pay for legal documents has reignited public concern over irresponsible ownership practices.
JPJ Urges Public to Stay Vigilant and Report Violations
JPJ also encouraged members of the public to report traffic offences through official channels. Those who witness violations or suspect similar offences can lodge a report by emailing aduantrafik@jpj.gov.my or by using the e-Aduan JPJ mobile app. Reports should include sufficient detail and the complainant&rsquo;s contact information to allow for proper follow-up.
Azrin concluded his statement by calling on all motorists to take responsibility for their vehicles and comply with national road safety laws at all times.
&ldquo;Road safety is a shared responsibility. We urge everyone to ensure their vehicles are properly taxed, insured, and maintained. Anyone found to be negligent will face legal consequences.&rdquo;
