The six former cadets&mdash;Muhammad Akmal Zuhairi Azmal, Muhammad Azamuddin Mad Sofi, Muhammad Najib Mohd Razi, Muhammad Afif Najmudin Azahat, Mohamad Shobirin Sabri, and Abdoul Hakeem Mohd Ali&mdash;were found guilty of causing Zulfarhan Osman&rsquo;s death at the Jebat Hostel Block, UPNM, between 4:45 am and 5:45 am on 22 May 2017. The victim succumbed to his injuries at Serdang Hospital on 1 June 2017.
Initially, five of the accused were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries a mandatory death sentence. The sixth accused, Abdoul Hakeem, was charged under Section 109 for abetting the crime, carrying the same penalty. The High Court later reduced the charge to Section 304(a), resulting in the 18-year prison sentence.
In 2023, the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the prosecution&rsquo;s cross-appeal, reinstating the murder charges and sentencing all six to death. However, the Federal Court&rsquo;s latest ruling has reverted the case to the 2021 High Court decision.
Potential for Early Release

In addition to the six convicted cadets, 12 others were charged under Section 330 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt to extract a confession from the deceased. These individuals were originally sentenced to three years in prison in 2021, but their sentences were extended to four years by the Court of Appeal in 2023.

In addition, two vehicles parked within the premises were also affected by falling debris.&rdquo;
Firefighters managed to stabilise the situation and secure the area by 7.55am. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among students, teachers, or nearby residents. The timing of the landslide, occurring just before the full arrival of students, likely prevented what could have been a far more serious incident.
School Operations Disrupted
Following the incident, the school temporarily suspended in-person classes to allow for safety checks and structural assessments. Parents were notified shortly after the incident, and arrangements were made for some students to be picked up early. Affected areas within the school were cordoned off, and emergency protocols were activated.
School officials expressed relief that no one was injured and thanked the fire and rescue personnel for their swift action. "We are working closely with authorities to ensure the safety and structural integrity of our buildings before resuming normal operations," a school spokesperson said.

With the passing of Pope Francis, the Vatican enters a period known as sede vacante &mdash; Latin for &ldquo;the seat is vacant.&rdquo; During this transitional time, the Church suspends all major policy decisions. The process of electing a new pope is overseen by the College of Cardinals. While the selection process has yet to formally begin, Vatican watchers and media outlets have already speculated on possible successors. Among the most discussed are:

<li>Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo (Congo) &ndash; Known for his conservative doctrine and peacebuilding in Africa.</li>
<li>Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle (Philippines) &ndash; A prot&eacute;g&eacute; of Francis, widely seen as a progressive voice for the global South.</li>
<li>Cardinal Pietro Parolin (Italy) &ndash; The Vatican&rsquo;s Secretary of State, deeply connected within the Curia.</li>
<li>Cardinal Peter Erdo (Hungary) &ndash; A strong traditionalist with a focus on relations with the Orthodox Church.</li>
<li>Cardinal Matteo Zuppi (Italy) and Mario Grech (Malta) &ndash; Reform-minded prelates with pastoral credibility.</li>
</ul>
Notably, any baptised Roman Catholic man is technically eligible to be elected pope, but in practice, it has almost always been a cardinal. The Church&rsquo;s evolving demographic and Pope Francis&rsquo; diverse appointments suggest the next pontiff may again break with tradition.
The Pope of the Poor and a Divided Church

Francis&rsquo; tenure was defined by tension between progressive reforms and internal resistance. He elevated women to positions of influence, overhauled financial operations within the Vatican, and preached a gospel of humility. Yet his leadership style drew criticism &mdash; both from conservatives who viewed him as dismissive of sacred traditions, and progressives who found his reforms insufficient.
He inherited a Church riven by scandal and bureaucracy. While he made strides towards transparency and accountability, especially regarding clerical sexual abuse, he struggled to satisfy the high expectations placed on him.
Nevertheless, Francis became a global icon, not least for his ability to connect with ordinary people. He famously refused the lavish papal apartments, choosing instead a modest suite at the Casa Santa Marta. His preference for dialogue over doctrine, and inclusion over exclusion, earned him both acclaim and controversy.
A Global Farewell
The Vatican expects a high-profile funeral attended by heads of state and religious leaders from around the world. US President Donald Trump, despite past disagreements with Francis, has confirmed his attendance, calling him &ldquo;a good man who loved the world.&rdquo; Leaders from Argentina, Brazil, Russia, and Ukraine have also expressed condolences.
As the Catholic Church prepares to enter a new chapter, the world reflects on the legacy of a pope who dared to dream of a more open, compassionate, and inclusive Church. Whether his successor continues down that path remains to be seen &mdash; but for now, the faithful mourn a shepherd who walked humbly, spoke boldly, and redefined what it meant to wear the white robe.
