A shocking video depicting the brutal bullying of a student at a MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) dormitory in Penang has sparked a wave of public outrage and prompted swift action from the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA).
The one-minute-and-32-second clip, which surfaced on <a href="https://x.com/mynewshub/status/1909438113753317672">social media</a>, shows a group of male students violently attacking a fellow student who was lying face down on a bed. The assailants were seen sitting on the victim&rsquo;s head and body, jumping on him, restraining him with ties, and whipping him with a belt. The disturbing footage has reignited concerns over student safety and the culture of bullying within residential schools in Malaysia.
MARA Chairman Condemns Behaviour 
Following the video&rsquo;s circulation, MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed the authenticity of the incident, stating it took place at an MRSM campus in the northern region of the country.
&ldquo;I received a full report confirming that the incident indeed occurred at one of our MRSM schools. We view this matter with the utmost seriousness and will not tolerate any form of bullying in our institutions,&rdquo; he said in a Facebook video posted on 7 April.
He described the behaviour as entirely unacceptable and contrary to the values MRSM stands for. &ldquo;MARA is a platform for developing the next generation of leaders. What sort of leaders are we shaping if they are lacking in basic decency and moral values?&rdquo; he questioned.
Disciplinary Action and Suspensions

As a first step, Dr Asyraf has ordered the immediate suspension of the students identified in the video &mdash; not as a form of punishment, but to prevent interference with the investigation and preserve the integrity of the disciplinary process.
&ldquo;The suspension of the students involved, whether proven guilty or not, is necessary to avoid disruption to the investigation that will be conducted by the MRSM Disciplinary Committee,&rdquo; he explained.
He added that the findings of the internal inquiry would be escalated to the MARA central authority for further action. While acknowledging that investigations must run their course before final decisions are made, Dr Asyraf made it clear that expulsion is on the table.
&ldquo;If the students are found guilty, we will not hesitate to expel them. This is a matter we will not compromise on. As I&rsquo;ve often said, &lsquo;You touch, you go,&rsquo;&rdquo; he reiterated.
Police Investigation Underway

Law enforcement authorities have also launched a criminal investigation into the incident. Seberang Prai Selatan deputy district police chief, DSP Mohd Norazmi Abd Ghapar, confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
According to police, seven students have been confirmed to have directly taken part in the physical assault, with five others identified as accomplices. Early findings indicate that the incident may have taken place in the middle of 2023, but only came to light recently after the video was shared widely online.
MRSM&rsquo;s Culture and Values Under Scrutiny Among Public
This high-profile case has thrown a spotlight on the broader issue of discipline and character development in boarding school environments. Dr Asyraf emphasised that MRSM institutions are meant to produce not only academically excellent students but also individuals with strong morals and ethical leadership potential.
&ldquo;It is meaningless to achieve academic excellence if it is not accompanied by good character and values. Institutions like MRSM must be safe spaces where students can thrive holistically &mdash; intellectually, emotionally, and morally,&rdquo; he said.

Proposed Solution: Retired Officers as Wardens

In response to the growing concerns over discipline, MARA is now exploring long-term solutions to prevent such incidents in the future. One proposal under serious consideration is the appointment of retired police officers and military personnel as full-time wardens at MRSM boarding schools.
The idea, discussed recently between Dr Asyraf and MARA director-general Datuk Zulfikri Osman, aims to introduce a more disciplined and vigilant presence in student dormitories.
&ldquo;These wardens would be recruited on a contractual basis, following a rigorous interview and assessment process,&rdquo; said Dr Asyraf in a Facebook comment. &ldquo;We are looking for individuals who can not only maintain discipline but also help guide students in their personal development.&rdquo;
He added that candidates would need to demonstrate the ability to inspire respect, enforce rules fairly, and promote a culture of accountability and support.
MARA&rsquo;s Pledge to Parents and Students

Dr Asyraf concluded by assuring parents and the public that MARA remains fully committed to the well-being and holistic development of its students. He pledged that the agency will continue to take strong, transparent measures to eliminate bullying and reinforce a safe and nurturing learning environment across all its institutions.
&ldquo;This is not just about punishing those responsible, but about creating lasting change in how we instil values in our future leaders. We owe it to the parents who place their trust in us, and more importantly, to the students who deserve a safe place to learn and grow,&rdquo; he said.
