Excitement surrounding the release of Nintendo&rsquo;s latest console, the Switch 2, has reached fever pitch. Even before launch day, analysts had forecast that the console would sell exceptionally well, "almost regardless of price" &mdash; and early indicators show that prediction to be completely accurate.
Nintendo recently updated its US "How to Buy" webpage to caution customers that "delivery by 5th June is not guaranteed" due to overwhelming demand. Moreover, many fans who signed up through Nintendo&rsquo;s official site may only receive their purchase invitation emails after the system officially launches.

The company is encouraging customers to also check with participating retail partners to secure a unit. However, even those outlets have reported rapid sell-outs, both online and in-store, fuelling a sense of urgency among potential buyers.
While Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, are still awaiting official pre-order announcements and local pricing, the current rush abroad offers a strong glimpse of the challenge that could await gamers regionally.
Pre-Orders Launch Amid Widespread Retail Chaos

After an unexpected delay caused by international trade tensions, Nintendo finally opened pre-orders for the Switch 2 across the United States and Canada on 24th April 2025. Originally intended to begin on 9th April, the pre-sale was postponed due to newly imposed tariffs on Japanese imports into the US.
As the pre-orders went live, retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and GameStop struggled to handle the overwhelming volume of traffic. Downdetector reported that Target alone received over 2,000 user complaints regarding website access issues within the first 45 minutes of the sale. Best Buy faced widespread login problems, while Walmart users reported issues with the retailer&rsquo;s app.
Despite the technical difficulties, stock was completely snapped up within minutes across all major retailers. GameStop commenced its in-person and online pre-orders slightly later, at 11:00am ET, but similarly experienced swift sell-outs. As of now, Amazon has not opened Switch 2 pre-orders, though they are expected to follow closer to the launch.
Nintendo recommends registering through its official website if you have yet to do so. Registration remains free, and those signed up will eventually receive a purchase invitation &mdash; although many may still face a waiting period beyond launch day.
What&rsquo;s New With The Nintendo Switch 2?

The Switch 2 offers a suite of major upgrades compared to its predecessor. The console features a larger 7.9-inch LCD display supporting a 120Hz refresh rate, 1080p resolution, and HDR capabilities &mdash; a significant step up from the original Switch.
When docked, the console supports gaming at up to 4K resolution, delivering stunning visuals for television play. Nintendo has also enhanced the console&rsquo;s audio system with improved internal speakers, while a new dock design featuring an integrated cooling fan helps maintain performance during long gaming sessions.

The redesigned Joy-Con 2 controllers introduce new features, including a C button, mouse-style controls, a tilt-sensitive gyroscope, and enhanced ergonomics for more comfortable gameplay. In addition, a built-in microphone now enables a "Game Chat" function, allowing players to communicate seamlessly during multiplayer sessions.
Internal storage has been boosted to 256GB, and, while still expandable, the Switch 2 now requires newer microSD Express cards for storage expansion. The device also features dual USB-C ports for faster charging and greater flexibility.

Nintendo has confirmed that several new accessories will be available separately, although many have seen slight price increases. The Switch 2 Pro Controller now costs $85 (~RM 371), a second pair of Joy-Con controllers is priced at $95 (~RM415), and the Joy-Con charging grip now retails for $40 (~RM174). Pre-orders for most accessories are already open.
Tariffs, Delays, And Production Shifts

The chaotic pre-order period can be traced back to broader global trade dynamics. On what was dubbed &ldquo;Liberation Day,&rdquo; former President Trump imposed sweeping new "reciprocal" tariffs on countries including Japan, introducing a 24% levy on imports effective 9th April. This led Nintendo to delay pre-orders in the US and Canada. However, hours later, Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs to allow for further trade negotiations amid volatile stock and bond market movements.
Despite the turbulence, Nintendo has maintained the original retail price of $449.99 (~RM1,963.53) for the standard Switch 2 and $499.99 (~RM2,185.21) for the Mario Kart World Bundle in the US. Nevertheless, the company&rsquo;s statements have left the door open for potential price adjustments in the future, depending on how trade discussions evolve.
To mitigate the risk of tariff impacts, Nintendo has been shifting more of its production to Vietnam &mdash; a move initially started in 2019. While Vietnam&rsquo;s reciprocal tariff was originally proposed at 46%, it is currently subject to a much lower 10% rate during the 90-day reprieve.
Still, Nintendo faces a significant challenge in meeting global demand. In Japan alone, a staggering 2.2 million people entered the Switch 2 pre-order lottery, far outstripping the initial available inventory.
Global Launch Plans Remain On Track
Despite the setbacks and overwhelming early demand, Nintendo has reassured fans that the global launch date for the Switch 2 remains set for 5th June 2025. Notably, pre-orders in regions outside of North America, including the United Kingdom, proceeded as originally scheduled without delays.
The Switch 2 marks Nintendo&rsquo;s most significant console release since the original Switch debuted in March 2017. With meaningful upgrades to performance, visuals, and gameplay mechanics, the new console promises to redefine portable gaming once again.
As excitement builds toward release day, securing a unit is already proving to be a formidable challenge. For now, eager gamers are advised to stay alert for future stock updates &mdash; and to be ready to act fast if they want to experience Nintendo&rsquo;s next big leap forward in gaming innovation.
That&rsquo;s certainly a hefty price tag &mdash; and if only the same could be said for the games. Sadly, despite technological advances, console titles still tend to cost more than their PC counterparts, which could deter some from picking up the Switch 2.

Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has officially announced his resignation from the Cabinet, ending his tenure as Malaysia&rsquo;s Minister of Economy. In a statement released on 28 May 2025 and echoed in a social media post the same day, Rafizi confirmed that his resignation will take effect on 17 June 2025. He will begin utilising the remainder of his annual leave starting immediately, which will run until 16 June.
&ldquo;I have submitted my resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,&rdquo; Rafizi wrote. &ldquo;This resignation takes effect from 17 June. Beginning today, I will be on leave until then.&rdquo;

He will be on leave from 29 May until the day before his departure.

The lawsuit, brought by four animal rights activists, has drawn national attention and stirred public debate about the treatment of strays and the responsibilities of local authorities. Lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan, representing the plaintiffs, praised the court&rsquo;s ruling as a critical step forward.
&ldquo;This is a huge win for animal rights in Malaysia generally and a positive first step towards obtaining justice for Kopi, who was murdered in cold blood,&rdquo; he told reporters following the decision.

Kopi was a familiar figure in the Besut district, known to many residents and animal lovers for her calm and affectionate demeanour. Her popularity soared in March 2024, after a video went viral on social media showing her gently playing with a stray kitten. The video, uploaded by one of her feeders, Abby Razali, garnered widespread attention and led to a wave of online affection.
But that public goodwill turned into collective outrage when news broke that Kopi had been shot dead during a stray dog culling operation carried out by the Besut District Council. The shooting occurred in the early hours of 6 October 2024, reportedly around 1.30am.
According to Dr Kartini Farah Abdul Rahim, one of the plaintiffs, several residents were awakened by the sound of gunshots. Upon investigating, they observed three council officers driving around in a pick-up truck. Shortly after, Kopi was found dead from gunshot wounds. Her death, initially revealed via a post on the &ldquo;My Forever Doggo&rdquo; Instagram account, prompted widespread condemnation and demands for accountability.
Legal Grounds: Alleged Breach of Animal Welfare Law

The lawsuit filed in December 2024 argues that the killing of Kopi was not only morally indefensible but also unlawful under Malaysia&rsquo;s Animal Welfare Act 2015. Shashi Kumar &mdash; are contending that the use of firearms to kill the dog and the unnecessary suffering inflicted on her contravene Sections 29(e) and 30(1) of the Act.
Section 29(e) prohibits causing unnecessary pain or suffering to animals, while Section 30(1) forbids the killing of animals using a firearm, except under specific conditions outlined in Section 30(2). These exceptions include approval by a veterinary authority, instances where an animal poses imminent danger to human life, or where such action is necessary to control the spread of disease.
The plaintiffs are therefore seeking a declaration from the court that the use of firearms in this case was not legally justified, and that the authorities acted beyond the bounds of the law.
Challenging Local By-Laws
Beyond the immediate question of Kopi&rsquo;s death, the case also seeks to address a broader legal conflict between federal and local regulations. The activists are challenging the legality of the Besut District Council&rsquo;s Dog Licensing By-Laws 1990, specifically Sections 9(1) and 9(2), which empower council officers to shoot licensed or unlicensed dogs if no owner can be located.
The plaintiffs argue that these by-laws are incompatible with the stricter protections afforded by the Animal Welfare Act, a federal law that supersedes local legislation. They assert that allowing council officers to indiscriminately kill strays undermines national legal standards and sets a dangerous precedent.
Government and Council&rsquo;s Defence

In response to the lawsuit, the Terengganu state government filed a motion on 31 December 2024 to have the suit dismissed, followed by a similar motion from the district council on 1 January 2025. A statement issued by the Besut District Council on 13 October 2024 maintained that the actions taken during the culling operation were lawful. However, this justification has failed to appease critics, who argue that even if procedures were followed, the procedures themselves may be unlawful under federal law.
A Moment of Reckoning for Animal Welfare in Malaysia
The case has galvanised animal rights supporters across the country and is being closely watched by legal experts, animal advocacy groups, and members of the public alike. Many see it as a test of Malaysia&rsquo;s commitment to upholding the protections enshrined in the Animal Welfare Act.

According to the official schedule, BLACKPINK will perform across six major Asian locations &mdash; Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Hong Kong &mdash; between October 2025 and January 2026. The tour begins in Goyang, South Korea in early July, before heading to major global cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, New York, Paris, Milan, Barcelona, and London &mdash; where BLACKPINK will headline two nights at Wembley Stadium on 15 and 16 August.
Record-Breaking Legacy and High Expectations
