At 1.57pm, Pamela sent what would be her final known message &mdash; a WhatsApp note to her lawyer stating she was on her way and estimated to arrive by 2.08pm. What happened in the next few minutes remains unclear.
By 2.30pm, her lawyer had become concerned when Pamela failed to arrive and could no longer be reached. Calls to her mobile phone went unanswered. WhatsApp messages remained undelivered. At 3.02pm, a missing persons report was filed at the Putrajaya police station. A second report followed the next day at the Seri Kembangan station.
Eyewitness Accounts and a Troubling Allegation

What should have been a routine journey from Melaka to Penang ended in a potentially life-threatening ordeal on the Cheras-Kajang Expressway, after the electric vehicle (EV) suddenly engaged emergency braking and stalled in the fast lane without warning.
The incident has since raised pressing concerns over the reliability of EV systems, the responsiveness of after-sales service, and the adequacy of consumer protection in Malaysia&rsquo;s growing electric vehicle market.
Emergency Braking Without Warning Causes Near-Misses

The owner, who was travelling with his wife and children, had made a brief detour to Kajang to attend a Hari Raya open house. Once stopped, the vehicle became unresponsive. The dashboard displayed a &ldquo;Power System Failure&rdquo; message, and attempts to restart the car were unsuccessful. Trapped in the fast lane with moving traffic behind them, the family could only wait helplessly as oncoming vehicles swerved at high speeds to avoid a collision.
&ldquo;It could&rsquo;ve ended badly. Cars were coming fast, and some had to slam their brakes or swerve dangerously. I was stuck with my kids in the car &mdash; it was terrifying,&rdquo; the owner wrote in his Facebook post.
Swift Response from Authorities, But Towing Complicated by Locked Wheels

Fortunately, the highway patrol team responded swiftly, arriving within ten minutes to secure the area and place cones around the stalled vehicle. However, the process of removing the car from the expressway proved far more difficult than anticipated.
An hour later, the insurance company&rsquo;s tow truck arrived, but technicians discovered that the car&rsquo;s wheels remained locked &mdash; even though it had been shifted into Neutral. This prevented conventional towing. As a workaround, the team resorted to using wheel dollies, which lift each tyre off the ground, allowing the vehicle to be rolled onto a flatbed tow truck.
Service Centre Closed Upon Arrival, No Support Offered

The owner and his family stayed with relatives nearby, uncertain about the next steps.
The following morning, the situation did not improve. According to the owner, service centre personnel appeared unprepared to deal with the issue and offered little information beyond vague assurances. After repeated insistence that the matter be treated as a serious safety concern, technicians diagnosed the problem as a fault in the 12V battery &mdash; the smaller battery responsible for powering auxiliary systems.
The service team informed the owner that the 12V battery needed to be replaced, but the required component was not immediately available. Moreover, the service centre advised that further checks on the wheel-locking issue could only proceed after the battery was replaced.
He was also told that a courtesy car would not be provided as none were currently available, leaving him without transport for the foreseeable future.
Travel Plans Cancelled and Frustration Grows

As a result of the breakdown and delays, the owner was forced to cancel his trip to Penang and return to Melaka. The incident had already caused significant distress to his family, and the lack of clarity or urgency from BYD&rsquo;s service centres in Melaka where he purchased the vehicle and the Glenmarie outlet, which is looking into the current issue at hand.
To make matters worse, the vehicle, although only 10 months old, had already surpassed 20,000km in mileage, which meant the 12V battery was no longer covered under warranty. According to BYD Malaysia&rsquo;s warranty policy, the lead-acid 12V battery is protected for 1 year or 20,000km, whichever comes first. The main high-voltage EV battery, which powers the electric motor, carries a longer 8-year or 160,000km warranty, subject to a minimum 70% State of Health (SOH) standard.
Previous Wall Box Complaint Remains Unresolved

Two months prior, he had lodged a complaint regarding a malfunctioning wall box charger &mdash; the home charging station provided by the brand.
Despite repeated follow-ups, he claims that no technician has been dispatched to inspect the unit, and the only response he continues to receive is that &ldquo;the matter has been reported to the supplier.&rdquo; To date, the issue remains unresolved.
The owner stressed that his post was not intended to disparage BYD, but to raise awareness among current and prospective EV owners about potential safety risks and customer service challenges. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not trying to shame anyone,&rdquo; he wrote. &ldquo;But something like this could happen to anyone &mdash; and it could be deadly.&rdquo;
He also called for greater coordination between BYD dealerships and service centres, particularly when it comes to resolving critical faults and providing consistent support.
Company Reaches Out Following Public Post
Since the viral post, the owner has confirmed that BYD Sime Darby &mdash; the local distributor for the Chinese automaker &mdash; has contacted him and is working to resolve the issue. The nature of the power system failure and wheel-locking problem is still under investigation at the time of writing.

While electric vehicles continue to gain dominance in the automotive market, not all manufacturers are fully sold on an all-EV future. Concerns remain &mdash; ranging from environmental impact and charging infrastructure to driving experience. He remarked that many Malaysian graduates are now trapped in low-income jobs despite the country&rsquo;s economic growth, and are increasingly unable to meet basic life milestones such as home or car ownership.
Recalling his own experience, Muhammad said he earned RM1,300 upon entering the job market in 1984. Today, a typical fresh graduate earns between RM2,000 and RM3,000 monthly&mdash;a marginal increase in nominal terms that doesn&rsquo;t reflect the sharp rise in living costs. When adjusted for inflation&mdash;assuming a conservative annual rate of 5%&mdash;today&rsquo;s graduates should be earning closer to RM7,000 to RM8,000 to match the purchasing power of their 1980s counterparts.
&ldquo;In real terms, salaries today are only a third of what they used to be,&rdquo; he said, adding that if current trends continue, today&rsquo;s young people may never enjoy the same quality of life his generation did.
The Rise of the Low-Income Graduate

Quoting recent data from the Ministry of Higher Education, Muhammad pointed out that around 40% of university graduates today earn less than RM2,000 per month in their first job. &ldquo;Without major reforms in our education and economic frameworks, we are condemning our youth to a future dominated by low-skilled, low-paying jobs,&rdquo; he said. He warned that Malaysia continues to lag behind other nations that were once on par with or even behind Malaysia in the 1960s, including Taiwan, South Korea, China, and Japan&mdash;all of which now enjoy far higher standards of living due to sustained structural reform.
Foreign Labour Suppressing Wage Growth

These foreign workers primarily fill 3D (dirty, dangerous, and difficult) jobs in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, agriculture, food services, and domestic work. While these jobs are often shunned by locals, the influx of low-cost labour from countries like Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nepal has created wage suppression for Malaysians in similar roles.
&ldquo;When employers can hire workers cheaply, they have no incentive to raise wages for locals. This affects our citizens directly, particularly those in the B40 segment,&rdquo; Muhammad explained.
A Growing Brain Drain: Nurses, Labourers, and the Search for Better Pay

Malaysia is not only failing to retain its skilled workforce&mdash;it is also losing talent to neighbouring countries with better wages. For example, JobStreet data shows that a nurse in Malaysia earns between RM2,700 and RM3,400 a month, while in Singapore, the salary ranges from RM11,000 to RM13,000. Even Saudi Arabia offers nearly RM7,000 per month.
Beyond white-collar professionals, Muhammad noted an increase in Malaysians crossing into Singapore to perform menial work. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just brain drain&mdash;it&rsquo;s now even low-skilled drain,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If we don&rsquo;t address this soon, Malaysia may one day become a labour-exporting country, with our children working as maids or labourers abroad.&rdquo;
Income Reclassification Misses the Bigger Picture
In response to the government&rsquo;s recent proposal to update income classifications&mdash;changing the B40, M40, and T20 system to B20, M50, and T30 based on consumption data&mdash;Muhammad said the new categorisation risks masking the real challenges of wage stagnation and cost-of-living pressures.
He argued that income-based benchmarks remain critical, as consumption patterns can be misleading, particularly when driven by debt or necessity. &ldquo;If you use the older income definitions, the B40 group probably now encompasses 60% of the population, not just 40%, due to post-COVID economic strain, low savings, and wage stagnation.&rdquo;
GDP Growth Is Not the Only Measure of Progress

That&rsquo;s where Malaysia needs to start focusing,&rdquo; he added.
Urgent Reforms Needed to Avoid Long-Term Decline
Despite the grim outlook, Muhammad said Malaysia still has time to reverse course. He pointed to the remarkable growth trajectories of East Asian economies that once had lower per capita incomes than Malaysia but have since surged ahead through long-term reform in education, technology, and governance.
&ldquo;We cannot continue benchmarking ourselves against regional peers who are also struggling. We must aim higher,&rdquo; he said.
He concluded with a warning: &ldquo;Without a bold and decisive push for structural change, we risk raising a generation that is poorer than the last, unable to afford homes, education, or healthcare, and forced to look overseas for dignity and opportunity.&rdquo;

After much anticipation and years of growing support in the region, K-pop sensation RIIZE has officially confirmed their first-ever concert in Malaysia, as well as a highly anticipated stop in Singapore, as part of their expansive 2025&ndash;2026 &lsquo;RIIZING LOUD&rsquo; Asia Tour.
This marks a major milestone for both the group and their Southeast Asian fanbase, especially those in Kuala Lumpur, who were left disappointed when Malaysia was left off the group&rsquo;s previous Asia tour. Now, the wait is finally over &mdash; and RIIZE is more than ready to light up the stage.
Who Are RIIZE?

RIIZE is a South Korean boy band formed by SM Entertainment, debuting on September 4, 2023, with the single album Get a Guitar. The group originally consisted of seven members: Shotaro, Eunseok, Sungchan, Wonbin, Sohee, Anton, and Seunghan. However, Seunghan departed from the group in October 2024.
RIIZE quickly gained attention with their debut single Get a Guitar, which sold over a million copies in its first week, making them the first group not formed through a survival show to achieve such a feat. Their music, characterized as "Emotional Pop," captures a range of emotions inspired by everyday experiences.
