Shopee sellers are bracing for yet another increase in operational costs as the e-commerce platform confirmed a hike in its SPayLater seller fee. The change, set to take effect on 8 May 2025, will see the fee rise from 3.5% to 4.5% for all completed orders involving the SPayLater payment option.

What Is SPayLater?

However, while buyers may choose whether or not to use SPayLater, sellers are automatically enrolled in the programme with no option to opt out. This means they must absorb the associated transaction fee regardless of whether they benefit directly from the instalment feature.
Why Are Sellers Frustrated?

Among those voicing concern is Loh, a power tool seller who requested partial anonymity. Speaking to local media, Loh said that the compounding cost of selling on Shopee&mdash;including this new SPayLater fee&mdash;is driving him to reconsider the platform entirely.
&ldquo;My business has to contend with more and more extra fees, and I&rsquo;d need to hire someone just to operate and manage the sales channel,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s pushed my business away from focusing too much effort towards selling on Shopee.&rdquo;
A Pattern of Increasing Charges

PERKESO then contacted her to verify her story. When asked why she didn&rsquo;t use public transport, she explained that as a single mother living in Bukit Damansara, owning a car was a necessity due to poor public transport access in her area.
Her claim was approved just four days after submitting the required documents.
Quick and Efficient Processing

This benefit is part of PERKESO&rsquo;s broader Employment Injury Scheme, which also includes:

However, despite the heavy branding, the Trump Organisation has quietly distanced itself from direct involvement in the technical operations. According to the fine print on the Trump Mobile website, its products and services are &ldquo;not designed, developed, manufactured, distributed or sold&rdquo; by The Trump Organisation or its affiliates. Instead, the Trump name is licensed under DTTM Corporation &mdash; a pattern familiar from previous ventures like Trump Steaks and Trump University.
The T1 Phone: Flashy Exterior, Familiar Core

Not only is the phone missing key specifications, such as the processor or RAM details, but the memory and storage categories appear mislabelled &mdash; with &ldquo;12GB Storage&rdquo; under Processor, and &ldquo;256GB Memory&rdquo; listed elsewhere. The device also features a triple camera setup (50MP + 2MP + 2MP) and a 16MP front camera, USB-C 2.0, and even a rare 3.5mm headphone jack.

Despite patriotic marketing, multiple analysts believe the device is simply a rebranded Chinese Android phone. Made in America? Not Quite

In a CNBC interview, The Verge editor-in-chief Nilay Patel said bluntly: &ldquo;The only phone you could get for $499 by September is undoubtedly a rebranded Chinese Android phone.&rdquo;
Even Trump&rsquo;s own family seems unsure. Eric Trump stated in a podcast that the phones would &ldquo;eventually&rdquo; be made in the US &mdash; a claim met with widespread scepticism. A Trump Organisation spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal that manufacturing would take place in Alabama, California, and Florida, yet provided no evidence or contracts to back this claim.
Infrastructure Reality Check
Experts agree that full-scale smartphone production in the US is not currently feasible. As Tinglong Dai of Johns Hopkins University explained, &ldquo;There&rsquo;s absolutely no way you could make the screen, get that memory, camera, battery, everything&rdquo; in the US by this fall. The only partial exception is the Librem 5 USA from Purism &mdash; a phone that costs US$1,599 (~RM 6,795), lacks 5G or OLED displays, and is only partially assembled in the US.

Still, the Trump Organisation&rsquo;s track record with branded consumer goods is spotty at best. Failed ventures include Trump Vodka, Trump Steaks, Trump University, and Trump Ice &mdash; all now defunct.
Final Verdict?
Whether Trump Mobile and the T1 Phone succeed remains to be seen. For now, it appears to be a rebranded Chinese phone wrapped in American patriotism, sold alongside a mid-range telco subscription bolstered more by political identity than tech innovation.

Over a dozen human bodies, including that of a baby, have been discovered as part of the Klang River Flood Mitigation Project, carried out under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) initiative.

The project, which includes dredging and widening the river to reduce the risk of flooding, has exposed more than ten bodies, with some weeks witnessing back-to-back discoveries.
&ldquo;To date, we&rsquo;ve handed over more than 10 bodies to the police and fire department for further investigation,&rdquo; Syaiful revealed during a press visit to Zone 8 of the project in Kota Kemuning on 16 June.
He described the emotional impact of the discoveries on workers, noting that the infant body was particularly distressing. &ldquo;There was even a point where we found three bodies in three consecutive days,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;These are not the kinds of findings you prepare for in civil engineering.&rdquo;

The level of pollution has made dredging efforts significantly more complex. To date, more than 918,936 cubic metres of waste material&mdash;including sediment, solid waste, and rocks&mdash;have been removed from the river as part of the ongoing restoration effort.
Additionally, LLSB records show that since 2016, a total of 94,000 metric tonnes of floating waste have been collected from the river&rsquo;s surface&mdash;highlighting both past neglect and the present urgency of clean-up operations.
Holistic Approach to River Restoration

The initiative aims to expand the river&rsquo;s flow capacity by up to 40% and improve water quality to at least Class III on the Water Quality Index (WQI), allowing for future treatment into potable water.
Current works focus on Zones 6, 7, and 8 in Shah Alam, covering areas identified as flood-prone, including Alam Impian, Section 24, Section 17, and Kota Kemuning. The project includes widening the river from 50&ndash;60 metres to 80&ndash;100 metres, strengthening embankments with flood walls, geo bags, sheet piles, and introducing earth bunds for structural resilience.
The initiative also supports the Shah Alam Sustainable Urban Drainage (SASUD) programme and the development of a water treatment plant at Sungai Rasau, aligning efforts to ensure Klang River becomes a future source of raw water supply for Selangor.
Minimal Community Disruption Promised

Despite the scale of the project, LLSB has assured the public that community disruption has been kept to a minimum. &ldquo;This is not just a construction site,&rdquo; said Syaiful. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a community-focused infrastructure project aimed at preventing disasters like flash floods while also creating long-term ecological value.&rdquo;
While engineering and environmental planning are progressing, Syaiful emphasised that public behaviour remains a critical challenge. He called for greater civic awareness, pointing out that many of the items dumped into the river could have been recycled or disposed of responsibly.
&ldquo;Some of these things may have washed in during floods, but not all of them. The volume is too high,&rdquo; he stressed. &ldquo;This shows a lack of civic responsibility. People must change the way they think about waste and how we treat our rivers.&rdquo;

Syaiful confirmed that the flood mitigation and rehabilitation efforts will expand to other sections of the Klang River, prioritised based on flood risk assessments and population density.
He acknowledged that the project is not without its difficulties. &ldquo;Our challenges are significant&mdash;but we believe that this integrated, large-scale approach is the future of water management and flood prevention in Selangor.&rdquo;

The Finance Ministry projects inflation to remain within a manageable range of 2.0% to 3.5%, thanks to the targeted nature of the revised tax framework.
A Grace Period for Compliance
To ease the transition, the government has announced a non-punitive grace period until the end of 2025, during which no enforcement action will be taken against businesses making a genuine effort to comply.
Further clarity is expected in the coming weeks, as the Finance Ministry and Royal Malaysian Customs Department will issue detailed guidelines, regulations, and FAQs to help businesses and consumers navigate the updated SST regime.

Sofi&rsquo;s migration to Malaysia began in 2016, initially as a student furthering her education. But her long-term ambition was clear &mdash; she wanted to build a stable and successful life abroad. Better Pay and Tangible Benefits

A standout factor in Sofi&rsquo;s decision to remain in Malaysia post-graduation was the significantly higher earning potential. She mentioned that earning RM3,000 per month is considered a high income by Indonesian standards, especially for young professionals. This salary not only covered her living expenses but also allowed her to save &mdash; something that might not have been possible had she stayed in her home country.
What truly impressed her, however, was the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), or Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja (KWSP). She highlighted the 12&ndash;13% employer contribution as being much higher than what she would have received back home. This benefit, she said, made her feel more financially secure and gave her the assurance that she was building long-term savings.
Years of disciplined saving eventually paid off, and Sofi proudly shared that she was able to purchase her own car in Malaysia, spending around 40 million rupiah, or approximately RM10,440. While she didn&rsquo;t specify whether the car was new or used, the purchase marked a major personal milestone.
Interestingly, she still chooses to rely on public transport, particularly the LRT, for her daily commute. She finds it more convenient for navigating Kuala Lumpur&rsquo;s urban sprawl and noted that the city&rsquo;s rail network makes it relatively easy to get around without the stress of traffic or parking.
Criticisms: A Car-Centric, Pedestrian-Unfriendly Nation?
Sofi&rsquo;s video struck a chord with many viewers, drawing in comments from both Malaysians and fellow Indonesians. Many were quick to agree with her views, stating that Malaysia offers strong advantages for foreign workers &mdash; especially in terms of employment opportunities, overtime pay, and relatively straightforward hiring requirements.

However, not everyone was entirely convinced. Some questioned Sofi&rsquo;s car purchase claim, arguing that new cars in Malaysia typically cost more than RM10,000 unless second-hand. Others used her story to highlight areas where Malaysia still falls short, particularly in urban planning.
Among the critical feedback were comments from Indonesians who had visited or lived in Malaysia and felt that the country lacked pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s really not friendly for walking,&rdquo; one user commented. &ldquo;Compared to Indonesia, Malaysia is even harder to walk around in. Malaysia&rsquo;s real wages have deteriorated drastically over the past four decades, leaving today&rsquo;s workforce with significantly reduced purchasing power, former Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim warned in a recent interview with Sinar Harian. He remarked that many Malaysian graduates are now trapped in low-income jobs despite the country&rsquo;s economic growth, and are increasingly unable to meet basic life milestones such as home or car ownership.
Recalling his own experience, Muhammad said he earned RM1,300 upon entering the job market in 1984. Today, a typical fresh graduate earns between RM2,000 and RM3,000 monthly&mdash;a marginal increase in nominal terms that doesn&rsquo;t reflect the sharp rise in living costs. When adjusted for inflation&mdash;assuming a conservative annual rate of 5%&mdash;today&rsquo;s graduates should be earning closer to RM7,000 to RM8,000 to match the purchasing power of their 1980s counterparts.
&ldquo;In real terms, salaries today are only a third of what they used to be,&rdquo; he said, adding that if current trends continue, today&rsquo;s young people may never enjoy the same quality of life his generation did.
The Rise of the Low-Income Graduate

Quoting recent data from the Ministry of Higher Education, Muhammad pointed out that around 40% of university graduates today earn less than RM2,000 per month in their first job. He believes this is a clear indication that the country&rsquo;s education and economic systems are not aligned with the demands of a competitive, modern workforce.
&ldquo;Without major reforms in our education and economic frameworks, we are condemning our youth to a future dominated by low-skilled, low-paying jobs,&rdquo; he said. He warned that Malaysia continues to lag behind other nations that were once on par with or even behind Malaysia in the 1960s, including Taiwan, South Korea, China, and Japan&mdash;all of which now enjoy far higher standards of living due to sustained structural reform.
Foreign Labour Suppressing Wage Growth

As of 31 December 2024, there were 16.78 million workers in the country, with 2.37 million or roughly 14% of them being foreign workers.
These foreign workers primarily fill 3D (dirty, dangerous, and difficult) jobs in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, agriculture, food services, and domestic work. While these jobs are often shunned by locals, the influx of low-cost labour from countries like Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nepal has created wage suppression for Malaysians in similar roles.
&ldquo;When employers can hire workers cheaply, they have no incentive to raise wages for locals. This affects our citizens directly, particularly those in the B40 segment,&rdquo; Muhammad explained.
A Growing Brain Drain: Nurses, Labourers, and the Search for Better Pay

Malaysia is not only failing to retain its skilled workforce&mdash;it is also losing talent to neighbouring countries with better wages. Muhammad highlighted that many local nurses are now migrating to Singapore, Saudi Arabia, or the UAE, where they can earn two to four times more than they would at home.
For example, JobStreet data shows that a nurse in Malaysia earns between RM2,700 and RM3,400 a month, while in Singapore, the salary ranges from RM11,000 to RM13,000. Even Saudi Arabia offers nearly RM7,000 per month.
Beyond white-collar professionals, Muhammad noted an increase in Malaysians crossing into Singapore to perform menial work. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just brain drain&mdash;it&rsquo;s now even low-skilled drain,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If we don&rsquo;t address this soon, Malaysia may one day become a labour-exporting country, with our children working as maids or labourers abroad.&rdquo;
Income Reclassification Misses the Bigger Picture
In response to the government&rsquo;s recent proposal to update income classifications&mdash;changing the B40, M40, and T20 system to B20, M50, and T30 based on consumption data&mdash;Muhammad said the new categorisation risks masking the real challenges of wage stagnation and cost-of-living pressures.
He argued that income-based benchmarks remain critical, as consumption patterns can be misleading, particularly when driven by debt or necessity. &ldquo;If you use the older income definitions, the B40 group probably now encompasses 60% of the population, not just 40%, due to post-COVID economic strain, low savings, and wage stagnation.&rdquo;
GDP Growth Is Not the Only Measure of Progress

Muhammad also criticised the nation&rsquo;s obsession with GDP growth as a benchmark for success. &ldquo;GDP doesn&rsquo;t put food on the table,&rdquo; he said bluntly. &ldquo;Real progress should be measured through employment quality, wage growth, and job structure&mdash;not aggregate output.&rdquo;
He noted that at international forums such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, discussions in developed countries have shifted from GDP to employment outcomes. &ldquo;The real question they ask is: what kinds of jobs are being created? That&rsquo;s where Malaysia needs to start focusing,&rdquo; he added.
Urgent Reforms Needed to Avoid Long-Term Decline
Despite the grim outlook, Muhammad said Malaysia still has time to reverse course. He pointed to the remarkable growth trajectories of East Asian economies that once had lower per capita incomes than Malaysia but have since surged ahead through long-term reform in education, technology, and governance.
&ldquo;We cannot continue benchmarking ourselves against regional peers who are also struggling. We must aim higher,&rdquo; he said.
He concluded with a warning: &ldquo;Without a bold and decisive push for structural change, we risk raising a generation that is poorer than the last, unable to afford homes, education, or healthcare, and forced to look overseas for dignity and opportunity.&rdquo;

In truth, Chinese cuisine is among the most common and affordable foods in Malaysia.
