PETROLIAM Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) will lay off around 10% of its workforce&mdash;impacting more than 5,000 employees&mdash;as part of a major restructuring exercise aimed at navigating prolonged profit declines, shrinking margins, and volatile crude oil markets.
The move, which was first initiated in February 2025, forms part of the state-owned energy giant&rsquo;s broader cost-cutting strategy to &ldquo;rightsize&rdquo; operations and build resilience amid an increasingly challenging environment for fossil fuel producers.

Announcing the decision at a media briefing on Thursday, 5 June, PETRONAS President and Group Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz confirmed that the workforce reduction will affect staff across all levels, including management. Those impacted will be notified in stages by the end of the year and throughout 2026.
Hiring and Promotions Frozen Until End-2026

"PETRONAS 2.0 will be run and organised differently, with revised work processes,&rdquo; he said, referring to the group&rsquo;s internal transformation initiative. &ldquo;We need to correct the way we work to remain commercially competitive, not just locally but globally.&rdquo;
The restructuring reflects the growing urgency for the company to adapt to tighter margins and smaller resource fields. Tengku Taufik noted that in the past, PETRONAS could enjoy profit-before-tax margins of up to 40% when oil extraction was more straightforward. Today, those margins have declined to between 25% and 38%, with further reductions expected.

Tengku Taufik acknowledged that PETRONAS is under increasing pressure to meet its dividend obligations to the government. With narrowing margins and declining output from mature fields, he warned that sustaining these contributions under current market conditions will be &ldquo;challenging.&rdquo;

&ldquo;We&rsquo;re not exiting Canada. It&rsquo;s a resource-rich geography that remains strategically important for our ambitions in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector,&rdquo; he said. While PETRONAS continues to entertain commercial proposals, he emphasised that this is part of the company&rsquo;s regular business review and not indicative of any planned withdrawal.
Ongoing Discussions with Sarawak over State Gas Role

On 21 May 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg signed a joint declaration affirming that PETRONAS will continue to carry out its functions under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA 1974) and related regulations. This declaration also recognised the Sarawak government&rsquo;s appointment of Petros as the state&rsquo;s official gas aggregator, effective 1 March 2025.
Tengku Taufik noted that PETRONAS remains open to continued negotiations to strengthen cooperation with Sarawak and to ensure energy needs are met across the region.

Crucially, PERKESO confirmed her eligibility despite the accident occurring while dropping her child at school and not yet being at her workplace. As it was part of her regular route to work, it counted as a valid commuting injury under PERKESO guidelines.
PERKESO then contacted her to verify her story. When asked why she didn&rsquo;t use public transport, she explained that as a single mother living in Bukit Damansara, owning a car was a necessity due to poor public transport access in her area.
Her claim was approved just four days after submitting the required documents.
Quick and Efficient Processing

What Is Temporary Disablement Benefit?

This benefit is part of PERKESO&rsquo;s broader Employment Injury Scheme, which also includes:

The former US President has officially entered the mobile phone and telco business through Trump Mobile, a newly launched MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) offering its own branded device &mdash; the gold-trimmed T1 Phone &mdash; and a 5G wireless subscription dubbed The 47 Plan.
A Telco Venture Built on Branding

The service, priced at US$47.45/month (~RM201), offers unlimited calls, texts, and data &mdash; including international texting to 100 countries &mdash; alongside fringe benefits like 24/7 telemedicine, roadside assistance, and call centres based in the United States. The plan&rsquo;s name is a nod to Trump&rsquo;s tenure as both the 45th and current 47th President of the United States.
However, despite the heavy branding, the Trump Organisation has quietly distanced itself from direct involvement in the technical operations. According to the fine print on the Trump Mobile website, its products and services are &ldquo;not designed, developed, manufactured, distributed or sold&rdquo; by The Trump Organisation or its affiliates. Instead, the Trump name is licensed under DTTM Corporation &mdash; a pattern familiar from previous ventures like Trump Steaks and Trump University.
The T1 Phone: Flashy Exterior, Familiar Core

Yet, experts quickly raised red flags. Not only is the phone missing key specifications, such as the processor or RAM details, but the memory and storage categories appear mislabelled &mdash; with &ldquo;12GB Storage&rdquo; under Processor, and &ldquo;256GB Memory&rdquo; listed elsewhere. The device also features a triple camera setup (50MP + 2MP + 2MP) and a 16MP front camera, USB-C 2.0, and even a rare 3.5mm headphone jack.

Despite patriotic marketing, multiple analysts believe the device is simply a rebranded Chinese Android phone. Tech sleuths identified it as a customised version of the T-Mobile REVVL 7 Pro 5G, which is manufactured by Chinese firm Wingtech, now owned by Luxshare, and sold online for as little as US$169 (~RM718).
Made in America? Not Quite

In a CNBC interview, The Verge editor-in-chief Nilay Patel said bluntly: &ldquo;The only phone you could get for $499 by September is undoubtedly a rebranded Chinese Android phone.&rdquo;
Even Trump&rsquo;s own family seems unsure. Eric Trump stated in a podcast that the phones would &ldquo;eventually&rdquo; be made in the US &mdash; a claim met with widespread scepticism. A Trump Organisation spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal that manufacturing would take place in Alabama, California, and Florida, yet provided no evidence or contracts to back this claim.
Infrastructure Reality Check
Experts agree that full-scale smartphone production in the US is not currently feasible. As Tinglong Dai of Johns Hopkins University explained, &ldquo;There&rsquo;s absolutely no way you could make the screen, get that memory, camera, battery, everything&rdquo; in the US by this fall. The only partial exception is the Librem 5 USA from Purism &mdash; a phone that costs US$1,599 (~RM 6,795), lacks 5G or OLED displays, and is only partially assembled in the US.
Even Trump Mobile&rsquo;s promotional push underlines the contradiction: on one hand, the company boasts &ldquo;Made in USA&rdquo; branding, while on the other, the Trump Mobile website distances itself from actual design or manufacturing responsibilities.
The MVNO Gamble

Politics, Profit, and Potential Pitfalls
Critics argue that this is yet another example of Trump using the presidency to enrich his brand. Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig noted, &ldquo;President Trump considers the presidency a vehicle to grow his family&rsquo;s wealth. Maybe this example will help more come to see this undeniable truth.&rdquo;
Financial disclosure documents reveal Trump earned over US$600 million from various ventures before his second term began &mdash; including licensing deals, golf resorts, and now, tech branding. Trump-related crypto projects alone have generated hundreds of millions since then.
Still, the Trump Organisation&rsquo;s track record with branded consumer goods is spotty at best. Failed ventures include Trump Vodka, Trump Steaks, Trump University, and Trump Ice &mdash; all now defunct.
Final Verdict?
Whether Trump Mobile and the T1 Phone succeed remains to be seen. For now, it appears to be a rebranded Chinese phone wrapped in American patriotism, sold alongside a mid-range telco subscription bolstered more by political identity than tech innovation.

Additionally, LLSB records show that since 2016, a total of 94,000 metric tonnes of floating waste have been collected from the river&rsquo;s surface&mdash;highlighting both past neglect and the present urgency of clean-up operations.

Current works focus on Zones 6, 7, and 8 in Shah Alam, covering areas identified as flood-prone, including Alam Impian, Section 24, Section 17, and Kota Kemuning. The project includes widening the river from 50&ndash;60 metres to 80&ndash;100 metres, strengthening embankments with flood walls, geo bags, sheet piles, and introducing earth bunds for structural resilience.
The initiative also supports the Shah Alam Sustainable Urban Drainage (SASUD) programme and the development of a water treatment plant at Sungai Rasau, aligning efforts to ensure Klang River becomes a future source of raw water supply for Selangor.
Minimal Community Disruption Promised

While engineering and environmental planning are progressing, Syaiful emphasised that public behaviour remains a critical challenge. He called for greater civic awareness, pointing out that many of the items dumped into the river could have been recycled or disposed of responsibly.
&ldquo;Some of these things may have washed in during floods, but not all of them. The volume is too high,&rdquo; he stressed. &ldquo;This shows a lack of civic responsibility. People must change the way they think about waste and how we treat our rivers.&rdquo;

Syaiful confirmed that the flood mitigation and rehabilitation efforts will expand to other sections of the Klang River, prioritised based on flood risk assessments and population density.
He acknowledged that the project is not without its difficulties. &ldquo;Our challenges are significant&mdash;but we believe that this integrated, large-scale approach is the future of water management and flood prevention in Selangor.&rdquo;
