A Chinese university student in Malaysia remains physically and emotionally shattered following a brutal knife attack by her ex-boyfriend at Taylor&rsquo;s University in Subang Jaya. The assailant has since been released on RM20,000 bail, a decision that has left the victim&rsquo;s family distraught and fearful for her safety.
Victim Haunted by Suspect&rsquo;s Release

In an emotional interview with Sin Chew Daily, the victim&rsquo;s mother, Madam Zhang, revealed the deep psychological impact the attack has had on her 20-year-old daughter.
&ldquo;He stabbed my daughter and almost killed her. Ever since learning that he was released on bail, she has been living in deep fear every day and keeps asking me, &lsquo;Will he come back to kill me?&rsquo;&rdquo; Zhang shared.
The family has been taking turns to watch over the young woman around the clock, unable to rest due to concerns for her safety. Zhang described the release of the suspect as a &ldquo;second assault&rdquo;, stating, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s even more painful than the initial attack because it makes us feel helpless and unprotected.&rdquo;
Severe Injuries and Long-Term Recovery

The attack occurred on campus on the evening of 15 July on campus. The suspect, also a Chinese national, allegedly slashed the left side of the victim&rsquo;s neck with a knife. Bystanders, including female students who helped stop the bleeding and male students who restrained the attacker, helped prevent a more tragic outcome while others alerted campus security.
The victim suffered a neck wound over 10 centimetres long requiring more than 40 stitches. Madam Zhang disclosed that the excessive blood loss caused pneumothorax in her daughter&rsquo;s lungs, requiring a chest tube to drain internal bleeding.
&ldquo;Her injuries were very serious,&rdquo; Zhang said. &ldquo;She can only sleep two or three hours each night, often waking in pain or from numbness. Her body might be lying down, but her nerves are constantly under stress.&rdquo;
Doctors have informed the family that her daughter may be permanently disabled due to severe nerve damage in her left hand.
&ldquo;She is only 20 years old, supposed to be in the prime of her youth, but now she&rsquo;s trapped in the shadow of death,&rdquo; said Zhang.
Mental Health Claim Sparks Outrage

The family&rsquo;s anguish deepened upon learning that the suspect was granted bail on the grounds of having bipolar disorder.
&ldquo;What angers us the most is that the person who attacked my daughter is now walking free by claiming mental illness, while my daughter has never used her trauma to gain sympathy,&rdquo; Zhang stated. &ldquo;How can someone who repeatedly lied, threatened, and manipulated others be said to be unaware of his actions?&rdquo;
She questioned the fairness of the justice system, warning that accepting such claims without proper scrutiny only serves to retraumatise victims.
&ldquo;If the judicial system truly accepts this reasoning, it will hurt the victims again and again,&rdquo; she added.
Campus in Fear and Call for Justice

The aftermath of the incident has also sent shockwaves through the university community. Several students have privately expressed their concerns, fearing the suspect may return to campus to seek revenge. This has cast a dark and unsettling atmosphere over what should have been a safe academic environment.
Madam Zhang called on judicial authorities to take the matter seriously and prioritise victim protection over leniency.
&ldquo;The law should not be a shield for the perpetrators, but a fortress to protect the victims. I hope no other girl will have to live in isolation and anxiety after being attacked,&rdquo; she said.
For now, Zhang and her family are focused on ensuring their daughter is never left alone, but she admits that family protection alone is not enough.
&ldquo;We need institutional justice and real safeguards. Our daughter is suffering physically and mentally, and the person responsible must be held fully accountable.&rdquo;
Incident Under Police Investigation
Preliminary police investigations revealed that the suspect claimed he acted out of anger, stating that he was upset over the victim allegedly telling others that he had imprisoned her and prevented her from attending classes. The incident was caught on video and widely circulated on social media, sparking outrage among students, parents, and the wider public.
Authorities continue to investigate the case, but for the victim and her family, the trauma is far from over.
